they really need to make an FHD version of this…

    • +1

But then it wont be at this price

      • +3

i'm ok with that… pay more, get more

  • +1

Just impulse picked one up as a knock about while travelling - should do the trick hopefully

    • +5

Most people here are pleasantly surprised with the performance of this model.

      Pros:
      * Good performance for $319.20

      • Light weight and compact

      • Both SSD & RAM easily upgradeable

      • Long battery run time

      Cons:

      • Screen small and not IPS

      • Limited ports & no DVD drive of course

      • +2

I'm certainly quite happy with mine.
I really only grabbed it for the occasional knock-around, travel companion and its been pretty good so far.
I do wish the screen was nicer - but its just a cheapie so can't complain.

    I cannot claim TRS?

    • +4

      Why not?

      • because it is shipped from outside of Aus?

  • Can this run virtual box?

  • +2

Haha I knew this bastard would be back! Still same price.

  • This laptop never get cheaper? Good price though.

  • That red one's pretty.

    • +9

      Faster too.

      • +1

        Well that's a given ;)

    • +1

I bought the White after putting it by Bill Shorten's office.

  • +1

If you can stomach the display it's a really good laptop. Dell has decent support too, had no problems with me returning it within 14 days free of charge.

    • How bad is the display? Only factor keeping me from buying at the moment :(

      • +1

touchpad is the worst. Display is no better then any ordinary laptops with similar resolution and display type

        • +2

The touchpad is Stomach-able. As long as you're not expecting to do something on MS Paint, it's sufficient.

      • +2

Personally it's not one I'd want to use for extended periods (as in hours and hours at a time), but it's perfectly fine for general use, and the size and weight make it a great little travel laptop.

  • Tempted to pick up one of these for a better processor/more RAM when doing MS Project work compared to the Acer Switch.

Just a pity there's no SD card slot… just micro SD. Will need to lug around an SD card reader still. At least there's more than 1 USB port.

I just have a 15.6" and 13.3" laptop still (both are a bit heavy for daily commuting with).

    • +4

If having to carry a tiny card reader around is the worst of the issues, it'll be just fine ;)

      • It's not a deal breaker by far. It's still a consideration though as I still need to lug around an SD card reader with the Acer Switch so this isn't offering any advantage there.

It's not so much a convenience issue moreso that I need access to the SD card reader for work or personal travel to download photos and it's easier to lose a little SD card reader.

          Hmm, hard life…

  • +5

Bought one of these a few months back. Highly recommended. Only downside is the screen could be a slightly better resolution.

  • A deal that never dies!

  • Note 2gb/32gb on dell factory outlet is under $200.

I reckon the screen and touchpad are woeful, below chinese import quality. Keyboard is not so bad and battery life is hood.

    • +3

Wait, you sure that's with the Pentium processor? I think you're looking at the Celeron models.

      • Ah yes sorry they are Celeron

  • A few of these on the refurbished site for the same price, too bad they don't give a further discount

  • Can you upgrade ram and SSD?

    • yes but not too easy for me

  • +2

I got one a while back. I love the form factor to death, the touchpad isn't too bad and the screen is about what you'd expect for the price. The thing that kills it for me is the gutless CPU, but then again what more can you realistically expect for this price. If you want a more powerful machine, spend more money, but there is a place for this one.

    • +1

It definitely does more than you expect. All I needed was a USB to Ethernet cable and I was set for using this machine during hackathons. Otherwise I use this to SSH into dev environments and do some text editing and organisation.

Really fantastic for the price. However, if anyone is in the states, buy a Toshiba Chromebook 2 instead and then upgrade the SSD.

    • Yeah well the N3710 still beats the hell out of the Aldi offering for their forthcoming touch screen which uses an Atom x5-Z8300.

      • Was looking at the alfi lappy, now this one is is better i just need to deposite funds for the purchase.

  • Seems a pretty good computer for general usage and travelling etc. No-one has too many negative things to say. It's very tempting!

However, I noticed another computer on the Ebay page for the Dell - HP Notebook, 15.6" Intel Celeron N3060 4GB RAM 500GB HDD DVDRW Win10Home 64bit, for $376.00:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Notebook-15-6-Intel-Celeron-N3…

This has a 15.6" screen and a DVDRW. However it only has a SATA hard drive - 500GB.

It's sold from NZ, but I assume it have an Australian warranty?

Disregarding the travel aspect, and the fact that it doesn't look as good, how would this HP compare with the Dell for general usage - performance/reliability etc?

    • Pentium is a much better processor. The Celeron is a budget chip that's basically like the Atom, the ones found in tablets and 2in1.

Ssd will make this thing load and open in an instant. The regular HDD is cheaper than the SSD, despite the massive difference in storage, due to the read and write speed of being a few times faster.

Edit:tl;dr Dell is a much faster laptop. Like, multiple times faster.

  • Has anyone had any success installing Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) on one of these machines? Looking for a cheap, light laptop that I can program with on the train/on the run.

    • +2

I used arch for a while. Everything worked out of the box when I tried xubuntu too.

      Very easy to install.

      • +2

+1 for ubuntu or xubuntu. Its pretty decent too, instal wps office for linux and you have a viable student machine and its way nicer than the spyware/crapware of win10

  • How is this different to this Dell one: http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-11-3168-2-in-1-laptop/pd?o…

The only thing I see is there is one more USB 2.0 port.

    • +1

Plus - this model is a 2 in 1, so it has a 360 degree hinge with four different modes, and a touch-screen.

    • 319 Vs. 548

      • 318vs 548??? Please explain
        Feeling a little senior

Original deal is sold out - is this one worthy at the extra ??

        • +1

i was only highlighting the price diff. i think these are back in stock no. 548 is same config but with touch screen. not worth paying 548 - i'd rather wait for another sale as they are quite frequent and buy the non touch screen version for 319.

  • Back in stock :-)

Pick up one as spare - already have one for sons byo for school

  • Well - that was an expensive day!

After this model ran out of stock I started shopping around for a bigger (15.6") model. I ended up with the latest model Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Core i3 with 8GB Ram and 1TB HDD, for $479.20 after the 20% discount.

I'll upgrade the HD to a Samsung EVO 500gb, and then I think I'll have an ideal machine for my purposes.

The only problem is that the Inspiron 11 3000 came back into stock today, so I decided I needed that as well, for more portability.

This site can lead to great expense at times :(

    • Not at times… always :)

  • If you want to buy the white one, this sucker now demands you to buy extra warranty.

  • can you do tfs tax refund with this ?

  • im buying this red notebook last month

    quite happy with it

used only for watch movie via hdmi and browsing web 8.5/10 from me

  • jumping in to see if it will be a nice linux client for messing around and remote logins.

  • Anyone got their laptop yet? They claim it was shipped yesterday but the tracking number is not working. Checking on dell website it says payment is not confirmed yet :!

    • +1

      mine says ETA 21/05

      • Did you get any tracking number? According to dell website mine says in transit :|

        • Yep! Mine's in transit also..

  • purchased for the mum.
