    MSY is the bargain.
Price beating is not a bargain.

    • Well either way, I couldn't find it cheaper than MSY anywhere.

  • Says it's out of stock at msy do it wouldn't be price beat anyway.

  • Always had issues price beating MSY(or any computer store really) at officeworks, the OWs near me always tell me that MSY is on a "blacklist" so they can't pricebeat them, and when I ask to see the list, apparently they aren't allowed to show me.

    • +5

Print their price match policy - ask them to read out where it mentions blacklisted stores.

Ask to see manager - send their name and their statements to your fair trading department and the accc if they repeat that crap.

This is 'What items are excluded from the offICEworks LPG?
'Package deals e.g. printer and computer bundles
      Cash back and coupon offers
Resellers and Grey Importers (i.e. products offered for sale in Australia by unauthorised retailers)
      Commercial quantities
      Customer special orders
Business Pricing (i.e. a reduced price not available to the public)
Competitor clearance products and stock liquidations
Discounts not available to the public (e.g. Team member discounts)'

MSY are crap but are not an unauthorised reseller or a grey importer unless a specific retailer says so for their specific products.

If the manager says Officeworks are officially excluding any companies price lists who are not grey importers they are guilty of false advertising and misrepresentation and they will be prosecuted.

The people I was speaking to were the managers apparently, and yes I showed them their own policy on my phone and it didn't matter what "false advertising" points I pointed out, they did not budge. They actually told me MSY/computer stores are stocking grey stock, and I can argue with them about it but if they just don't budge, then it's not worth me getting frustrated over. And to be fair, it's not just OW, some Harvey Norman stores I've been to does similar "dodges", saying certain stores are not "genuine competitors" or "not within this suburb",I'm assuming they're already expecting people to come in with computer store prices to pricebeat/match and they just make stuff up on the go.

It's just too much of a hassle and time consuming to save a few dollars and go through the trouble of complaining to fair trading/accc and back and forth and so on tbh, and that's clearly what they're banking on, if they don't want my business then I'll just buy from wherever the sale came from in the first place. And for those that do have the time, patience and attitude to take it to fair trading/accc, you definitely have my respect.

If a brief complaint to an external body is too much why not try a telephone order to officeworks and store pickup.

Price matching is supposed to apply to online orders and moves you beyond your shit store.

Please name and shame your Officcworks store as well.

        • Ordering over the phone with officeworks can have the same results, it all depends on who you interact/chat with, mind you this was all around 2years ago, so if things have changed since then, then great news for everyone.

Anyways, I've had a friend who tried to pricebeat a modem/router over the phone first before going instore on '1300 office' and the rep said they would first have to contact MSY and ask about their stock levels and check whether its aussie stock (fair enough) as well as about their T&Cs/return policies (what?). And of course typical MSY usually never picks up their phones, whether they're too busy or just lazy, who knows, so no pricebeat there, luckily he was able to do it instore anyways. But that call certainly seemed like they were ready to make up excuses to dodge where possible.

I've read heaps of similar experiences over at whirlpool and on the ozb forums (both good and bad), and by then, you'd really just want to spend that extra $1-10 at the original place of sale, they probably deserve anyways.

If I remember correctly, the store I went to was Yarraville(VIC) and the other was either Altona/Highpoint(VIC), if naming and shaming is not allowed, the mods can remove this line.

EDIT: Did a quick search and I remember this being one of the more interesting/similar stories that I've read back then from the forums https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128999

if anyone can get this usb hub to work on win 10, let me know!!

    • Thanks for saving me $26

    • Has always worked fine for me on Windows 10.

    • works fine for me on Win 10

    • Using all 4 USB 3.0 ports now and working fine with Windows 10. Never had a problem in 2 years with it.

    • I had no problems, but I have actually lost the one I use on my win 10 pc……. My linux HTPC is using one and works perfectly…..

      • My brand new M43 hub doesn't work with my new Dell XPS 15, it also didn't work with my old laptop which ran win 10 as well. Initially it did recognise the drive, but now it no longer recognises the hub. It's not a laptop hardware issue as it neither works with my XPS 15 nor my old laptop.

Are there any special drivers or settings you adjusted? Because as a plug and play device, it doesn't work !!

        • Sorry this was plug n play for my Xps 8700…

    • I have it working , make sure this setting is disabled in device manager

  • thats a high price for a 4 port usb 3.0 hub.
    no deal

From my experience these are utter unfunctional garbage. I'd recommend walking away.

    • +4

I have one and I don't recommend walking. I would run.

    • I have one for a laptop running Windows 8 and several 2tb drives hanging off it (torrenting). Save for the poor build quality (one switch doesn't click in correctly) it works well. Glad someone mentioned Windows 10 and the issues so no update for me.

    • +1

Yep, I've had three of them. The first two were replaced under warranty by officeworks, the third is also having problems. Power buttons stop working, ports stop working; these are overpriced garbage.

    • Ditto, absolute rubish

  • bought 1 from ow, then exchange, then return & refund, It just not have enough power when I use the 2tb portable drive, end up got the unitek for $15 from MSY on special last time.

    • that's interesting that it would not have enough power to run your portable harddrive when the adapter is rated @ 3A hmm

  • I've been using one of these for 18 months on a Windows 8.1 setup and it's been great…

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/orico-aluminium-7-port-mac-desi…

This isn't a seller recommendation, they're just the first one selling it that I found quickly. :)

  • So sell me on this why do i want one ?

    • +1

So there's an easier way to hang 4 hard drives from your laptop and actually have it conveniently placed so you can turn hard drives on and off faster than plugging the drives in one handed in a dark room with the plug upside down while watching porn.

    • I'm considering one connect the rpi to add more ports to add tv tuner etc. Bought one of the noname ones from ebay posted above which doesn't work at all.
