MSI GT73VR-6RF $3598 Titan Pro @ Harvey Norman

110

Picked up one of these babies when I was checking out their 20% off MSI sale. I originally went it just to check out the GT73VR-7RF for $3999 and noticed that the model displayed was actually a 6RF.

The only difference between a 6RF and a 7RF is the 6820HK (Skylake) and 7820HK Kaby) which has minimal clock difference between the two (200hz so about 5%-8% performance difference) also a Intel 530 vs Intel 630 integrated video (which doesn't matter since both machines will only use the dedicated video card) . The 6RF comes with a 512GB SSD whereas the 7RF comes with only a 256GB SSD. Both have the 8GB GTX 1080.

I pointed it out to the sales rep and he went to check on the 6RF price. It came back as $3598!!!! WTF?!? I couldn't actually believe the price and had to get the guy to double check. Unfortunately, they only had the one display model left and I didn't want one with other people's grubby hands all over it. He then proceeded to tell me that the Toowoomba store had 3 in stock for the same price. I rang ahead to confirm stock and price, did the hour and a half drive and voila! Got myself a beast that should last me at least the next 2 years for so for a bargain price.

This model is not listed on their website anywhere, so you'll need to ring around for stock levels. Checked Umart and they have the 120Hz screen version for $4339. Computer Alliance has the same 60hz screen (it's acutally a 75hz screen) for $4200 ex display model.

Edit: I probably should have posted the specs, sorry: i7 6820HK, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 8GB GTX 1080, 17.3" 1080p 75hz screen

    huh?
i could build a doubly powerful gaming rig for this money and have money left over.

    how many in stock?

    • +12

Why compare prices between a desktop and a laptop lol. They serve two different purposes. Everyone knows a desktop will always work out cheaper than a laptop with the same specs. The point is though, can you be bothered carrying about your desktop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, a long ass power cord etc OR would you rather just carry a laptop?

As for stock levels, I picked one up at the Toowoomba store so there should be two left there. I did ask the guy if it's Australia wide, and he said yeah. So I guess you'll have to ring around.

Who wants to game on a 17" screen?

        • -2

Yeah. Should have picked up the 21" curved Acer Predator 21x instead, but unfortunately I only just took out a mortgage and a second property.

        • @Gau:
          But the mechanical keyboard!

        • @Gau:

but unfortunately .. a second property.

hang in there mate, things will pick up.

      • +8

        @ 4.14kg this isn't a laptop 😂

        • You're right. It's a portable desktop :D

  • which has minimal clock difference between the two (200hz so about 5%-8% performance difference)

Think you need to check your units there..

    • I did - http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7820HK-vs…

      6820HK is 2.7GHz and the 7820HK is 2.9GHz.

      • You need to learn the difference between Hz and MHz

        • -7

Okay sorry IT grammar nazi lol

        • +4

@Gau: It's ok, you did just spend $3600 on a laptop from HN :-)

        • @Porthos:

Yeah. Silly me. Why didn't I just go run off to Umart and buy it for $4339 instead. DOH!

        • +2

          @Gau: whoosh

        • +2

@Gau: any reason why you picked this over a metabox customisable one?

        • @Slippery Fish: Build quality. I also wanted one from a store that I can walk back into should I have an issues with it. I had a 13" Metabox going back a couple of years. It was all plastic and sending it back and forth for a faulty wifi module got tiring. It did however have an awesome Chimei screen :)

        • +1

          @Gau:

With you on that. My experience with Metabox is they are crap.

I prefer Asus to MSI, but this is a nice buy if you have the need.

I have a similar Asus - going to downsize next time round as lugging it onto the plane and off again, and just carrying it around in general isnt so easy.

Hate to be THAT guy….but close to 4grand for a gaming machine with only a 1080 in it is hardly a bargain. I understand it is "on sale" but "gaming" laptops are never a good deal, with very few exceptions. Not to mention very small storage for such a price. Imo? If you want to spend that money, build a gaming/editing/productivity rig for 2k or so (what i done), then spend the remainder on a laptop if its necessary, or just save that money in the bank.

    • +3

True. Probably should have mentioned that I'm on the road for a month every 3 months, so this suits me fine.

      • +2

hmm in that case fair enough, however I would still consider getting a cheaper laptop. A 1080 is unnecessary at 1080 at that refresh rate (in short wasted performance = waste of money) Or if possible, looking into a mini itx or itx build. 3500 is way too much for a laptop, I wouldn't even spend that much on a desktop tbh.

        • +2

Yeah a GTX 1080 is wasted on a 1080p screen, but I will plugging this into my 27" 144Hz 1440p gaming monitor when I'm at home.

        • +2

Mate of mine is on the road pretty often too.
Usually staying a week to 4 weeks here or there.
Went from a gaming lappy to a miniITX rig.
          1070-16Gb-6600K-512GB 600p SSD
Absolute beast for the price and never a thermal issue as had with the lappy.

Even a traveling gamer can't justify a lappy unless you are actually moving more frequently than every 2 or 3 days.

If these machines run a properly written DirectX 12 application with multiadapter support, they will use both the discrete and integrated graphics at the same time.

    • I didn't know that, but good to know. Cheers.

  • If it was a razer blade pro at that price Id consider it an ok deal.

    • +2

As sexy as those Razer Blade Pros are, I'd imagine it'd melt with these specs under the hood without the right cooling.

    • +6

So you wouldn't pay an extra $200 for double the RAM and SSD and a whole model difference of a GTX 1070 to a GTX 1080?

    • +2

If you're willing to accept arbitrary specification difference, you can find a "similar" model for $3000 cheaper.

      • -1

op accepted an arbitrary spec difference from the model he went in for

  • +2

When you really want your $3.5k spend to be a bargain

  • +1

    op needs to chillax

    • +5

Oh I'm chilled. Just find it amusing that everyone is being a hard lot tonight lol. Looking for every excuse under the sun to shoot down what I consider is a bargain when you compare it to other stores known to be cheaper eg. Umart and it suits my needs fine. Yeah, it's not going to be a bargain to everyone, but isn't that the purpose of this site? You post what you think to be a bargain and possibly a bargain to someone who may have the same requirements. Someone could be after the same gaming laptop and shops around, checks sites like Static Ice and sees that the cheapest is an ex demo one from Computer Alliance for $600 more. Then the repeated comment of being able to build a desktop for cheaper etc etc. That's a known fact that I don't dare to argue. But it doesn't suit my requirements :)

      • +1

        You make a fair point.

      • +3

Yet, if you look up the recent deals (20% off ebay) they will happily spend $1,300 on an iPhone, to use it for the next year or two, before replacing it.

        Ironic isnt it?

If its the cheapest around, then its worth posting it.

  • -3

For this price i could get the same spec desktop, a brand new monitor and peripherals, and still have enough to get a Vive or Oculus to play with.

    • +3

      So what?

    • Same thing as what my friend's wife said (why not a commodore), when he bought the boxter.

  • I find the MSi Ghost to be much more portable.
I regret getting the GT series as it is so heavy!
The power Brick alone is massive.

    • Yeah. I considered the Ghost series at one point, but needed the extra grunt. Which GT did you end up getting?

      • MSI GT70 Dominator Pro

        • I see. They're the previous GT shape aren't they? Yeah 3.9kgs is quite heavy for the specs.

  • What is this 20% off MSI sale?

  • -5

I find it hard to believe there is a market for this overpriced shit. If you wanna game do it properly and save a lot of $$&

  • +1

Got the gs63vr 6rf recently, the amount of bloatware is insane!

  • +5

A similarly spec'ed Metabox Prime-X laptop with a newer desktop 7700k cpu(or 6700k, because it says 2 different things at different points of the order process) + (yeah I don't know how they get the cooling right for that either) is $4125. Also weighs 3.9kg at those specs.
I just did a quick check, I know nothing about the comfort of the keyboards/trackpads, or the quality of the screen, or the details of the other internals.
I also am unsure of the reputation Metabox has on ozbargain, but their customisation options have always appealed to me. I have not owned, or even seen a Metabox laptop of any kind in person.

So, overall, it does seem to be a bit of a deal..

To reiterate (OP did not mention it in the description) OP travels a lot for work, and appreciates the portability of a close to desktop grade laptop. It's not to carry around in a bag all day, it's to function as a desktop wherever your desk happens to be that day.

It does seem to be hard to find deals at this end of the market, even though the markup is pretty big.

  • I know they're being phased out pretty much but at this price point I'd still want an optical drive…preferably a Bluray rewritter.

    • +1

It's not hard to throw an external drive in the bag. Let's face it, the bulk & weight of an external optical drive really isn't going to make that much difference with a laptop like that.

      • +1

just throw a desktop in the bag as well with the weight of this not going to make much difference :P

      • -1

External rewritters are a clunky solution. They require their own padding and protection and you have to deal with connecting and disconnecting them all the time. Plus if you are using it as a laptop, there's no where for the rewritter to go.

Don't go laptop shopping after taking meth

  • +1

This laptop is a beast and an excellent machine worth considering if it suits your needs. I have the 6RE version and love the seamless power - nothing stops it, play all the latest games at max settings on a big monitor, boot in seconds. Yes it is a bit larger than standard laptops - but it is also a true desktop replacement which is very quiet with excellent cooling. If you need a compact portable (but much less powerful) laptop just get an XPS13
