    What do you think?

    Time for some shut eye…

  • "RRP Price: AU $1,899.00" :-) ops…

take my advice, do not purchase this laptop without seeing the screen in real life. the panel included is well below average, and unless you intend to change the screen like i did, do not purchase.

    • +1

Did you purchase with a TN screen then physically swap for a better one?

    • +1

Yep, I just bought a refurbed i7-6700HQ (last year's model of the same), and seriously hate the screen

      • I have the 3 years old model and seriously hate the screen. no exemption

flexb, now I'm very interested in replacing my screen. Can you point me in the right direction?

      I've found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/5q8omp/upda…

I'm reading through it an other links now, but any pointers would be appreciated.

depends on budget; there was another thread on ozbargain regarding this laptop in which the guy brought the samsung panel, awaiting to see his response,

i bought the generic version au Optronics ; its fine, been using it for about 1 month now, slight lower bleed only on full black screen, but not noticeable once you start using it. the panel is milessssss better than the included panel

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360840209739?_trksid=p2060353.m27…

good luck; if you need any help, feel free to message.

    • Yeah, exactly. Go for the LP156WF6-SPB1

      • Does form factor matter? Do I need to open up the laptop and check the model or mounting screw position before I order a new one? Or is it pretty much universal? Perhaps a Dell 15.6" == a Dell 15.6"?

Also is it possible to replace a non-touch screen with a touch one? Touch is no big deal, but is sometimes nice to have.

        • +1

Yes, it matters. There are different 15.6" screens.

You want eDP with 30pins. The other specs are up to what you want (contrast, viewing angle, brightness, gamut, response time, resolution, etc).

I'm not sure whether eDP 30 pins accept touch inputs, and/or how that would be compatible with the laptop, but I recommend searching panelook.com to see whether there are 15.6" screens with touch and eDP 30 pins.

Had a quick look on panelook.com. There does seem to be a few (I found 4) eDP interface (30 pins) panel with touch. Decent specs as well (although not as good as the LP156WF6-SPB1). However, I can't tell for sure whether it'll just work plug-and-play (with drivers). Also, it may be hard/impossible to get these exact panels.

        • @ameel: Is the physical form factor universal then?

        • @DeepDreamer:

I'm not sure what you mean.

However, as far as I can tell (from my search online and reading on panelook.com), all eDP 15.6" 30 pins should fit. Double check voltages though before you select a model.

Also, you will not be able to find a provider for MOST models anyway. Most resellers will sell 'compatible' (crappier) models. Best to stick to the known & reliable ones.

        • @ameel: By form factor I mean physical dimensions. Will the screw holes line up to mount it? Is the panel going to be thinner or thicker?

So really, I'm trying to figure out if I need to take the laptop apart first, note the model of the panel, and make sure I get a replacement that is the same shape. Or can I just buy any 15.6" IPS eDP 30 pin display, and I know it will physically fit

        • +1

          @DeepDreamer:

I don't know for sure. Go on panelook.com and check out the specs for the relevant 15.6" eDP 30 pins panel you're interested in. They should have the dimensions/etc.

The model that comes on the Dell is AU Optronics B156HTN03.8. On reddit, they say "any panel with a 30-pin eDP connector and the same dimensions should be compatible". But again, double check the dimensions on panelook.com.

And again, I'm 99% sure you will find that most of the panel models are not available for purchase anyway, except for a couple that have been mentioned before, namely:
LP156WF6-SPB1, B156HAN01.2, LTN156HL01-102, and panels that are "compatible" with those models.

        • @ameel: Thanks. Am negotiating with some sellers.

A warning to all: read the fine print. Many have the model number in the title of the listing but the fine print says 'we may send a compatible model'. When I ask which models, one of them is a TN screen. Dodgy.

Best price so far for what looks to be a guaranteed quality panel is AU$150.

        • @DeepDreamer:
which model are you getting for $150? Is that with delivery included?

Almost all of the sellers only sell COMPATIBLE model, and not actual model. The only handful (literally 3 fingers) sellers that have the exact models will have "Exact" in the title. Even then, you have to contact the sellers to confirm.

See http://whrl.pl/ReTyRF, it links to the best screen you can get, costing $100 USD express shipping from overseas.

As far as I can tell, the Australian resellers only have compatible screens and do not have the exact models with the better specs.

        • @ameel: That deal is better than mine. This is mine: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15-6-exact-modell-b156han01-2-mat…

        • @DeepDreamer: your model is alright.

        • @ameel: The listed item (in the post you linked to) appears to be an eDP 40pin model?

        • @leonardr: wrong description. it's eDP 30 pin. I double-checked with vendor who said wrong description. I already received the unit, and it fits perfectly.

        • @ameel: Came back to say my panel arrived and fits and is a great improvement on the TN panel. Thanks to those that let me know this was an easy thing to do

        • @DeepDreamer: good work! happy to help :)

        • @DeepDreamer: which panel did you purchase finally? Can you give me a link? I'm looking to purchase one myself.

Also, since it has been more than a month, how's the new panel doing? Any issues so far?

As a side note the 256gb+1tb version can be had for an extra $100 atjb for those interested in a larger ssd but dont want to upgrade it themselves

  • Just curious though is this laptop better than Acer VX15 (around $1500), can anyone provide me any advise?

  • Bought this during the last Ebay sales, no regrets and pretty powerful. It can run Doom 4 and Mass Effect Andromeda FHD/Ultra at decent FPS. The only thing is the LCD is pretty bad, I hooked to external and treat this laptop as a Desktop!
