They are gearing up for whisky week …..lots of places have upcoming tastings on.

    • do you have the times and location?

  • it said Promotion Code FRENZY17 has been applied.

But the price doesn't come down 20%

    • +1

The price is already 20% off. The code is for free delivery.

      • thx… then the price doesn't attract to me at all.

  • +3

Some of the more exotic whisky's are pretty well priced here:

    • Ardbeg Uigeadail for $110 (usually $130)
    • Talisker Distillers Edition $95 (usually $120)

These are very rarely on sale.

    • +1

      Ardbeg Corryvreckan is better.

I bought one in overseas duty free around $106 AUD

      • Damn, that's a steal! Where did you pick that up?

        • from Singapore Changi Airport terminal 2 <- the one just got fire yesterday.. hope they didn't burn all the alcohol…. lol

        • +1

          @GundamZeta: Fire sales!

    • Dans still hasn't matched the prices yet

      • +3

Support the initiators not the imitators. :)

  • cannot check out when item has limit restriction

    • I was having the same problem…

It let me checkout after I changed my state to Tasmania at the top of the website.

  • Great prices on ardbeg and Laphroaig

    • Agree. Might wait a few more days though and see if Dans or others try and top this sale. Otherwise will pull the trigger on a bottle of both.

  • Anyone have any recommendations for someone who likes Whisky, wants to dabble in more peated scotch, but not looking for anything near the levels of Laphroaig?

    • +1

Ardbeg, definitely. You're not confused with Lagavulin, right?

      • I might give it a go (going to a whisky tasting this weekend). I haven't had any Lagavulin, so not sure what that is like.

Nope, definitely tried Laphroaig and it was too much. I really don't dig bandaid and iodine :P

        • +1

The bandaid and iodine flavours grow on you :)

Some lighter highly recommended ones are Jura Superstition and Cragganmore 12yo. I take these when I know I'll be drinking for more than just the taste.

        • +1

Lagavulin is a monster. One of the few I add water to. So probably not for you…. yet.

        • Peatiness tends to be measured in parts phenol (per million) or ppm

laphroaig and Lagavulin tend to rate about 40-50 ppm

Ardbeg 10yo is at 55-65 ppm

Ardbeg supernova is around 100 ppm

Bruichladdich's Octamore is a punch in the head at around 160+ ppm

PPM isn't everything though.. the chemistry of whisky distillation and maturation and how it affects the way our olfactory is way to complex for anyone to fully grasp, let alone capture in one number. To my tastebuds Ardbeg produces one of the most competently blended standard bottlings out of Islay.

          edit:

a good intro to Islay malts might be something like Bruichladdich 10 yo.. which has little to no peat, but is still an Islay whisky.
Talisker and Ardmore aren't from Islay but are peated quite moderately at 10-15 ppm so they might be your next step up.
If you like those Bowmore is moving up a notch… then you could go to Caol Isla 12yo.. from there its not a huge jump to the peat monsters.

Highland Park 12yo. Islay characteristics in balance with all the other parts. Wont try and remove your tonsils! AND… is included in this offer.

      • Ah thanks, I've seen it around but for some reason I've never tried it

    • +1

Tallisker is great. Peaty and with salt and seafood ocean flavours.

      • I'm not a fan of seafood, but I'll give it a go

    • +2

I'd suggest going for a Speyside peated whisky then – recommend Benromach's 'Peat Smoke'. Or if you're attached to the salty Islay taste, try something peated from Kilchoman or Bruichladdich (generally has a sweeter note than your Laphroaigs & Lagavulins to help the smoke go down).

Obviously whisky taste is a very personal thing, but I would caution that some of the other comments here are steering you in the wrong direction. Eg. most of Ardbeg's offerings are definitively in the same category of harshness as Laphroaig. Highland Park more drinkable but nothing to write home about and has more of the 'grassy' taste of some of the Highland whiskys. Talisker not quite so harsh in peatiness but the iodine notes tend to slice up the back of the throat just the same.

Specific recommendations, based on what you're asking:

      • Dalwhinnie 15YO – very drinkable, a little peat smoke but much smoother, affordable, an excellent starter whisky and tops my list because it's the only one I'd recommend that's part of this deal.
      • Kilchoman – pretty much anything from these guys is amazing and AFAIK most of their expressions are lightly peated. If you're looking for something a bit easier to drink, try the 2008 vintage if you can find it, otherwise the Machir Bay will do well and is widely available.
      • Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Scottish Barley – this is heavily peated, but I still find it less harsh than Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg; and it's one of my favourite drops. Available from DM's, but not on sale.
      • Benromach Peat Smoke – very nice drop, but the flavour profile (being more classic Speyside) diverts from the Islay distilleries.
      • Nikka Yoichi 10YO – if you're prepared to step outside Scotch altogether, Nikka's Yoichi is a remarkable starter whisky because it's relatively subtle but has a complexity that retains hints of all the elements you find in great whiskys.

Cheers thanks! I've actually just finished a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15.

A bit delayed, but I actually ended up going to a whisky tasting recently, and didn't actually hate the Laphroaig Quarter Cask! Mind you, it was the last drink of the night, so… ;)

I did try the Highland Park as well, which I quite enjoyed, but you are right that it wasn't amazing.

I think maybe I don't mind peat exactly, but rather the medicinal and iodine aspects that often come with it. I didn't find as much of this in the Quarter Cask, even though it was peat heavy.

Bowmore to me is much lighter than than the big three (ardbeg, lagavulin, Laphroaig)

Coal Ila is intermediate in my opinion.

Honestly you can just work you way around Islay, check wiki's scotch page, there's not that many distilleries there.

  • Boo! Doesn't work for Lagavulin 16 :(

    • what do you mean by that?

      try changing location/store :)

      • I meant didn't change the price - $99 is too high

    • $99 is too high anyway. Give it a few days - usually drops to 85 or less. World Whisky Day is technically Saturday from memory.

      • Got to agree that $99 is bit high, if I recollect it right I always bought the same in the range of 75 to 84. And I don’t see deals on Japanese Single Malt though.
