  • imagine gaming at 7680x1600 with eyefinity!!!

    0_o

I should just be happy with my 5760x1200 :P

    • do you need the higher spec monitors to do eyefinity? would cheapo 2x acer 23" ones do? they look like they have large borders but still…

is rotating them and merging into 1 monitor possible - this would actually interest me more.

      • Works perfectly with el cheapo monitors. Can't comment on rotating them (portrait style) and using them together but I imagine it could work.

      • you can have monitors in any orientation for eyefinity ;)

  • -5

That's a hell of a monitor alright…but that money does buy 3x Full HD 32" LCD TVs! ;)

FWIW, the human eye does have a limitation on the resolution it can perceive, and 2560x1600 is well above it, so it seems kinda pointless to me! :p

    • +1

      not true

2560x1600 gives so much work space it's about 2x more workspace than 1080p

it's mainly for graphic designers etc

      • You do know there's other ways to increase your workspace that don't just relate to native resolutions; don't you! ;)

        • I agree but some people like me would like more desk space and spare a mult-monitor setup. A single screen with that res would be convenient with many things (gaming, browsing and excel). I dislike having 2 monitors separated by their thick borders.

    • When you have a monitor of such a large size, that resolution is justified.

1080p is pretty low res for 27+ inch monitors.

      • Can you actually see a difference between the resolutions? I've not had one that large myself; although I'm currently using my HTPC on my 55" LCD - granted I'm sitting back aways; but I've studied human cognition & perception at uni, so IMHO a physiological limitation is pretty darn hard to get around! ;)

        • TVs are generally not IPS panels, especially el cheapo 32 inch ones - so putting aside what myths you might believe about the resolution, your Dell 3008 v 32inch HD TV comparison is not exactly apples to apples.

          • -1

@bigheadache: Well, the stuff on human perception is not a myth; quite the contrary, it's easily verified, scientifically researched & documented fact, if you would care to do a little research; however, fair comment on the apples to apples analogy! You've got me there! :)

The question that you deftly never attempted to answer is still valid though…can you see a difference? ;)

I'd like to say I was being facetious but no I wasn't (well, quasi maybe); I'm pretty stingy, I could never justify $1400 for a 30" monitor, but I won't ever pretend to have a professional use for one that size/res/price either! The harsh reality is that I would either buy slightly smaller (as others have rightly pointed out), or make a $500 32" 1080p LCD TV work for me if I really wanted a display that particular size.

That's just me, but it's amazing how adaptable we can be if properly motivated! :p

            • +3

@StewBalls: The resolution threshold, at which you can no longer perceive any difference with the naked eye, is dependent upon your distance from the LCD.

Sitting 2-3 meter back from your TV, you probably won't notice much difference between 720p and 1080p on a 32" or below TV (especially on the 22" ones).

ie, The closer you sit and larger the LCD panel, the more you will be able to notice resolution differences.

The fact that you sit 30-50cm from a PC monitor means its not that hard to tell 1920x1200 from 2560x1600 on a 30" screen :)

              • @MetalPhreak: Please tell me you're not silly enough to be sitting 30-50cm from a 30" screen, or a 24", or a bloody 15" for that matter???

I give up, you win, I can't argue with your logic dude, yes, of course the closer you get to anything, the better you'll be able to see it, regardless of how small it gets! Yep, I now wholeheartedly agree, there are no limits to human visual accuity, it is solely related to proximity; thank you for helping me see the light! :p

I feel for you though, it must be truly scary walking through the world for you guys as airborne dust particles become asteroids; germs become alien invaders & water droplets become tsunamis! :p

                • +1

                  @StewBalls: Upvoted for justice.

                • @StewBalls: Actually I sit about 50cm-60cm away from twin Dell Ultrasharp U2410 24" monitors all day at work. One of the junior designers has a 30" that runs the same res as my 24" (1920x1200) and the moment I sit in front of his PC I can easily tell the difference as the dot pitch is completely different. My eyes have to scan a larger area to see the same workspace.

It's the same reason why people make a big fuss about Apple's retina display on their phones, it's the concentration of pixels in a given space. The more pixels in that space, the clearer you can display something as there are more pixels available to render anti-aliasing or interpolation on, or simply just a larger workspace you can display.

Bottom line: if you're just gonna watch videos, you shouldn't even be looking into Ultrasharps. If you're gonna use it for work, then it's one of two displays on the market atm worth considering.

                  • @funkymonkey: Dude, seriously; if you need to sit any less than a metre from your display, you need to get your backside down to your optometrist, pronto! ;)

    • +1

And that limitation varies with distance.
Having a resolution like this is perfectly justified when you are sitting less than 4 feet from the screen.

      • And that limitation varies with distance.

Yes, but only to a degree…there comes a point at which the human eye/optic nerve/visual cortex simply cannot distinguish miniscule individual rows, lines or dots; regardless of proximity! That's why we often use little things called magnifying glasses, loupes & microscopes!!! :p

Again, I know it's not what you guys want to hear, but if you do some research you'll find it's true! ;)

        • +1

Yes it's all about pixel density and distance.

Apple's retina display is one where you can't physically get close enough to tell the pixels apart. But if you stuck that same resolution on a larger LCD you can :P And then if you stepped back enough, you can't :D

          • -1

@MetalPhreak: Yep, you're absolutely right, visual accuity has nothing whatsoever to do with it, it's purely a function of distance; how could I have been so foolish as to believe what all those texts & journal articles said; when you and Apple had the problem already solved! Wunderbar, you've revolutionised the field of optics! :p

  • will also work with other monitors.
    eg U2410 for $594

    good stuff

  • Can you stack dell coupons? I have both the Employee Purchase and NRMA Roadside coupons and they can't be combined with the above (actually the NRMA Roadside coupon is identical to this one; same voucher code etc)

  • +4

This is in no way to undermine the original submission, but I find if you want to get stuff from Dell (in particular monitors, which I've been buying since the 2405) you should talk to a sales consultant :)

Use the coupon as ammo and make them work for you! I managed to get 2x U2410 for $1100 ($550 each) plus they threw in the 5 year warranty (which is something I always get) for another $40 ($20 more for each). If you get a good Dell rep, he'll pay off :) Oh & I used the NRMA discount (15% off which I think this coupon is too) to tell them that I could easily order it online for about $594, if you want the sale you'll have to do better than that! $570 should be easy even via the online chat if you get a good rep.

    It pays to haggle!

    • Say.. next time you haggle online could you show me a copy of your chat?
I'm just interested by the idea of haggling online.

  • +3

goes well with my $1500 graphics card

    • -1

You would want a TN panel instead for that graphics card.

  • Is there any sign of a new 30" coming out?

  • For those who dont want to pay an extra $561 for an extra 3"

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/30586

    • I would buy the 27" if it was not a 16:9.

    • Damn for those who waited the extra two months seem to have gotten the better deal…
Good work Dell, good see some really good deals from Dell.

  • which are the best dell 23/24 monitors? doesnt seem like they have any slim LED monitors?

  • +1

obviously there are people who have no idea what's the difference between IPS and TN panels. the deal is lost on them.

    • IPS has twice as much colour and when you view IPS at an angle it doesn't lose black levels… TN is best viewed from center on.

      • +1

If you didn't know that without reading your comment… like slowmo said, this sale is still lost on you.

  • FYI - Dell 3008FPW is end of life product hence the cheap pricing trying to flush out last stocks. I actually got my 3008FPW at EOFYS sale, same pricing. Have replaced it once and looking at replacing it again since this batch or perhaps the batch before this of current have an annoying buzzing sound. Cheap big ass display but 3008FPW seems to have botchy colour/tinting plus buzzing sound sometimes, but no monitor is perfect. If not perfect then replace within 30 days, if still not good repeat process until happy all for free of course.

After September the Dell U3011 is expected which is factory colour calibrated (with report) and have expected 1 billion colours as oppose to 3008FPW 16.7 million colors. I expect quality to be better (perhaps??) than the 3008FPW but you should expect to see it onsale for $1999 maybe $200 voucher discount if lucky. Have to wait for end of life for cheap pricing points.

  • hmm. doesn't seem to work anymore
