Scraped My Car: (

Hi OzB,

I recently scratched my Commodore VY 2003 Sedan and am heartbroken.
Scrape

Money is tight at the moment, could any Ozbargainers estimate how much I am looking at for a repair?

I am in the South East of Melbourne.

Thank you.

Buy a new door but at this age they will all have a few dings and scratches.

  • +1

Looks like you ran it up the side of a concrete pole in a car park.

If it is just light, some of it "may" buff out. If it is damaged, bent, down to bare metal type damage, there may be no way to cheaply fix it…

Cheapest option would be to ring around a few wreckers and see if you can find an identical car in the same colour. Just swap the door out for another one.

Complete VY doors for $75 in silver…

Easiest way. Commodores are a dime a dozen, so there are always going to be heaps of parts on Gumtree and eBay for them…

      • Freight out of SYD would prove uneconomical on that particular offer, however an example of what you may have to pay for a used door.
Note that door being of a higher trim level has the addition body moulding.

If you are handy swapping a the door for a used door in the same color will be your cheapest option.
Depending on how much repair is needed to the existing door, you would be looking in the region of $500 to repair and repaint.

    Scrap it

  • I think from a smaller shop you may be looking at about $500 or so…

A door from a wrecker may cost a few hundred and easy enough to swap it over.

However, there really isn't much need to do it right now, why not wait.

    u in the south east….
    mmmm…really helpfull

    • +5

      your comment was really helpful!

      • +2

South East of where? Queensland? Australia? Sydney? Melbourne? Adelaide?

        • +3

I assumed Victoria or Tasmania. Sydney would be more of the Middle East, and Perth is definitely West.

    • It says Melbourne in the user's location

    • OPs location is available in their user profile.

    • Hahaha ok I'll cop that.
South East Melb of course ;)

  • +6

Scrape the other side too, so it will look balanced & normal. :p

  • WD-40 it?

    • -1

      or Turtle Wax it.

      • +1

        or bumper sticks?

        • $1500 repair or $1200 for a replacement car… :D

        • Put some Windex on it.

  • +3

    its called character

  • +1

Did you take paint off your car or is it mostly paint transfer from whatever you scraped against?

If it is mostly paint transfer you might make it look a lot better but not totally fix it with this.

    • I had this happen once and was… well, heartbroken, but it happened to be paint transfer and came out completely with no damage to the car. Now that was a relief.

  • Replace door or DIY, probably the same costs.

  • +2

go to wreckers and get a new one.

My recommendation as a panel beater buff it up a bit shave sharp edges and keep driving till someone side swipes you :)

    • +1

Did this with a hail damaged bonnet. Someone front-ended my parked car at Bunnings 8:50pm on a Friday with 3 cars in the whole car park!

      • I had a customer get rear ended 2 times got paid out on third insurance got a bit suspicious so he ended up getting it fixed after the third not bad payouts each time :)

  • Any reason why asking us instead of a qualified panel beater?

Edit: You are 18, you should let your parents know and apologize if it is their car.

    • +4

Yes, I am 18 but its my car paid for in full.
I just can't face the embarrassment would rather sort it out myself.

      • +8

What embarrassment, happens to everyone at some stage…..

One thing you must learn, an expert is only someone who has stuffed up in the past……

      • +1

Listen to @pjcook. It's all about learning curve.

Nothing's wrong with having accidents or making mistakes. Yeah parents might freak out at the beginning but they'll come around after a few hours.

      • +2

I just can't face the embarrassment would rather sort it out myself.

Just move to Burwoo, Chatswoo or Eastwoo; it's already the fashion here.

        • -2

Are you insinuating that these suburbs are heavily populated by people of Asian heritage which you believe have questionable driving skills? If yes, you're racist…

        • @Cwong14u:

Even if that was what he was referring to, im not sure how pointing out that a particular ethicity are deficient in a paticular skill is racist…he is stereotyping or generalizing but how this proves he's racist is a stretch mate. Stop being offended by everything.

        • -3

          @Bullion78: stop smoking crack, mate.

        • @Cwong14u: go and look up definition of an ad hominem. That's what you just did.

        • True story, if you go Carpark at Eastwood, the cars are all angled and can't park straight

        • -1

          @Bullion78: Thanks, but no thanks.

On a side note, you really need to work on your written English skills…Your fancy use of latin words and definition of stereotyping is overshadowed by your lack of punctuation and typos.

        • +1

          @Cwong14u:

That response just exemplified my point.

        • -1

@Bullion78: What was your point again?

  • +2

The first cut is the deepest.

  • Looks like it would buff out with some cut and polish

  • +1

Seriously mate with 10 minutes and a helping hand you can replace the door. Cost me 80 bucks for a new door when someone reversed into my commodore. Easy easy easy job.

  • +1

Walk into the bushes in your most bogan suburb. Bound to find the parts you need.

    • +4

But you'll need to torch the car to make the colour match.

      • +6

South east of Melbourne is Frankston… If OP is from the Frankston area, if he mows his yard, he may just find a whole car.

        • -2

So many postcode snobs here :S

Wasn't OzB initially made for ppl from the SE which the late sippers in Toorak could laugh at?

        • +1

@khomeini: what do the late sippers drink?

        • Whatever they bloody want to! :)

        • @spillmill: late sippers don't drink much, the coffee bar has already closed.

Sand sharp points, spray with primer, save for 6 months and get it fixed properly.

  • Search for a mobile paint repair person, they charge a lot less than panel beaters and do spot repairs. The majority of that damage looks like it will polish out.

  • +1

Buff the door with cut polish.
If no paint damage, apply wax.

If there is paint damage, you can still apply wax to help prevent rust, but wax will fade over time and require reapplication.

You can apply touch up paint to prevent rust, but generally for novices you will leave unsightly blobs which don't exactly blend with the existing paint.
However, this is a common solution as it is cheap, quick and simple.

If you have the time, a fun option would be to sand the paint back, apply a filler, sand that back, apply 3 coats of primer, sand that back, apply 3 coats of paint, sand that back, apply 3 coats of top coat and sand that back, and apply wax.

      Maaaaaad.

It's a 14 year old Commode. Leave the poor thing be, drive it as is.

  • +3

Car is too old to worry about. Just let it go, its a battle scar :)

  • +1

Who cares? It's an old car and the minor damage isn't that big of a deal. My car has duct tape all over and panel damage but I just keep on driving the damn thing until it falls apart lol.

  • buff and polish the door and it will look OK until you decide to fix it propery.

  • +1

Two ways to go about it:

    Option 1:

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/SCA-Cut-Polish-300g… - $10. Go over it with a micro-fibre cloth(You'll need to rub hard) and 95% of it will disappear.

If you don't believe me, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvCHyrsk4pc

I've used the above product many times on family friends cars and they were so appreciative and thankful for fixing it.

    Option 2:
Go to wreckers and a new door for your car would be $75. Just be careful with the install cost if you aren't able to do it yourself.

    • Option 3: Learn to drive.

  • $700ish for 2 doors resprayed, cash.
(Don't expect the ritz version for that, but should look ok.)

  • I did the same on my rear wheel arch. Deep gouges in the paint, right down to the metal.
I sanded it back to metal, taped it off, did primer and two coats of cheap aerosol paint. It looks… Poor. But it isn't rusting underneath!
