No Microwave Food for Work

So I freelance and my latest job, 90 people go on break at a time and there's only 6 bathrooms and microwaves, 30 min breaks where I picture the entire time being in line! We do have a fridge, toaster and sandwich press which I think will be used less. Brainstorming meals that don't need a microwave so far I've got sandwiches and cold salads/pasta. Any suggestions? Lunches/dinners you can fridge, but don't require heating up.

Go for lunch at different time

    • Shift work, not possible sadly. If you get up during work it must be only to use the bathroom.

        do you work for hitler?
place a microwave in the toilets.

        • That reminds me, would you like to use your break to line up for the microwave or bathroom? :P

Or use the hand dryer to heat it up….

Time for a 35-minute bathroom break then lol

Gosh. That sucks. When I go to work, first thing I do is make a coffee and/or breakfast, read the news, check out the deals on OzBargain… I will do some work after lunch though.

i do my work 1 hr prior to the end of the day, other than that im on OzB

        • Have have productivity timers that will tell you how fast you go, what your rate is per hour and all that. If you leave your desk it will make a note.

Bring your own in and start a "fast pass" system for a small fee: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/microwave-oven-/302322477486?hash…

    • Thanks. Ebay emailed me today saying a microwave I'm interested in is ending soon.

  • Vegemite sandwiches, don't risk peanut butter - someone could die!

You say that like its a bad thing… Sounds like a solution to the OPs problem if anything!

  • toasty sandwiches rock - must have cheese

I used to make a cous cous, tuna and four bean salad.

I made the cous cous (1/4 cup) the night before, but it just takes boiling water so you could make it at work. Then add 1/3 tin of 400g four bean mix and a small tin of tuna (I used olive oil, but choose your flavour). I used to put the cous cous and beans together the night before and just add the tuna at work (straining most of the oil, but sometimes I wanted more in).

Change the quantities as you see fit.

It kept me super full all day, which I liked, and didn't need to be refrigerated because it's just cous cous and beans. And because of no refrigeration there wasn't a chill to it.

    • Beans means farts

      • Maybe they'll get to the microwave quicker on other days then?

      • Can confirm.

I've used a heat gun to heat up my food. My colleagues thought I was an idiot but my food was heated at least…

Haha, that's awesome. You sure showed them.

You can buy Thermos food flasks, they have wider mouths for scooping food out. You can heat up your meal (curry, rices, stirfry, etc) before you leave home for the day and the thermos flask will keep it hot until lunch. They're about $30 at Big W I believe.

    • Thanks I didn't think of that! Last time we didn't have access to a microwave was middle school, so its been quite some time.

    Cup noodles.
Make soup and have it in a thermos. Hot soup and a sandwich, yum.

  • At a job I was at for 5 months we had free sandwich building ingredients. I used it 98% of the time. Sometimes I toasted it for variety. Switch your meats, condiments, salads, and you won't get bored for a while.

    • Subway?

      • No an office-type job. Tons of sales positions so the boss realised a couple hundreed a week on food is less than the potential sales from having everyone in the office.

  • Make a yummy salad at home.

  • ask ur boss could he please buy another microwave, we have 4.

    • It's seasonal, so it goes for a couple months then dissapears till next year.

  • This reminds me of all those times that I have booked a hotel without checking if they have a microwave and then grabbed something late from a store or something that I needed to heat up later. There are heaps of youtube videos that show you how to heat up the food e.g. using steam from a kettle etc.

Best I've seen is using a clothes iron as a sandwich press

You can heat loads of things in a sandwich press so long it isn't runny, you don't mind it flat and its wrapped in something. Hell you can even cook on it by treating the bottom as a hot plate. I've seen eggs and bacon cooked on my work one…

    • Steak and onions. Make it minute-steak.

  • Sandwiches can be change up just by using a tortilla or even lettuce leaf wrap

    Also
    Sushi
    Rice paper spring rolls
    Vietnamese pork noodle salad
    Ceviche
    Can of tuna
    Raw veggies with hummus
    Boiled egg /cold lunch meat
    Antipasto/dolmades
    Cold taco
