      • Yes.
The pans on sale here are NOT plain cast iron, they're enamel coated which is very much not the same.

    • Don't stainelss steel frying pans stick though? hence non stick teflon and the granite/stones etc and this cast iron? kitchen newbie

Are cast iron pans heavy? I think my only issue is a lot of pans are so damn heavy, so if you're doing a stir fry and need to toss it to mix it up, it's a struggle.

    • Very. Instills fear in me when using them on our glass cooktop

    • +1

Yes. Thin steel wok for tossed stir frys. (Or just flip the food faster with a spatula/spoon.)

  • I've got the Dutch oven from the last sale and whilst nowhere near as good as the more expensive brands it's definitely worth the price. I actually prefer this for every day cooking as i don't care if the enamel chips or stains since it's cheap to replace.

  • Can anyone confirm if the griddle pan is raw cast iron on the inside, and just an enameled exterior? I prefer the seasoning on raw iron.

    • The griddle I got 3 years ago has something that is best described as a black paint coating, not ceramic or enamel, whatever it is it was scrubbed off the ridges easily and does not appear to be 'plain' cast iron like camping camping gear is.

  • Has anyone ever used the torch from ALDI's? I just want to know if the recharge is simple or not.

  • Tip for all, google cast iron seasoning, it's one of the major selling points of cast ironware!

Slowly my house is being taken over by Aldi merchandise!!

      gotta catch 'em all!

  • Hope your kids don't find out they killed all your dreams!

    • Spend big… Kill your kids dreams

  • Does anyone have any pro tips on how to beat the queue when these sales come up?
Judging by the snow gear sale in Perth, I don't know how I can get one, unless I go to the shops an hour early and queue up

So what (if anything), is the benefit of (decent) enamel cast iron cookware, over plain?

    • +2

Enamel is supposed to be relatively non-stick and easier to clean from the outset. Plain (non enmel) cast iron needs to be seasoned before it develops some non-stick properties. Granted most plain cast iron pans these days seem to be pre-seasoned, but I've heard the factory seasoning isn't all that great and still requires some natural seasoning (be it intentional or simply through continued use) before it becomes reasonably non-stick.

The only other 'benefit' I can think of is that all those pretty colours look more attractive than your plain cast iron pan to some, but this is all subjective of course. Personally I love the look of my shiny black carbon steel / cast iron pans that look like they've come straight out of hell's kitchen.

Oh yeah, one other point is that plain cast iron does not like acidic foods like vinegar, tomatoes, etc. So plain cast iron isn't good for preparing let's say a passata sauce. Enamel has no problem with acidic foods.

So in summary, both plain and enamel cast iron have a place in your kitchen and are used for different things.

  • does the enamel coated cast iron need the same care like the non-enamel coated counterpart

  • Haha I loled at the first line of OP's topic!

  • Bought some at a garage sale a few months ago,, they had a fair bit of the range..frypans stock pots etc..think I paid $20 for 4items they hadn't used used them and neither did I, resold them for a small profit later at my garage sale. That was before I got an induction cooktop (also from Aldi) should have kept them.

  • I feel your pain, I too have come to the realisation I'm destined not to have a $350+ pot. Thanks for posting I was waiting for Aldi to sell this.

  • Can I buy it before 3 Jun? What's the normal price and do all stores stock them?

    • no. special buys are on the special buys days and onwards. hence it's got a date - no early release.

I'm disappointed at the distinct lack of dutch oven gags in this post. Considering making an official complaint!!

  • So casted iron is great on gas stoves right?

    • suits all heating elements.
THe only issue is the enamel coating which will wear off over time

  • I've bought 2 of the aldi french pans (maybe 2 years apart). The enamel coating starts to come off in places after 2 years. I use a french pan most nights to cook, so I am happy to keep buying them every 2 years.

No french pans in this aldi sale though, hopefully later in the year.

    • Happy to report that French Pans are definitely on sale next Saturday, in assorted colours, and for $24.99.

      (:

      • is that the one under the enamel stock pot 11l for $19.99 in the picture?

Just wondering - what exactly does a kitchen newbie use the cast iron french pan for? Can you cook things similar to the professional style frying pan 28cm or the cast iron frypan on the opposite page of the catologues for meats and other day to day items? Or are pans used for more specific types of meals?

      • Yes thank you… will be going away for the weekend, so hopefully there is still a pretty light blue one left for me when I go to aldi on Monday morning.

  • Just went to Aldi Melbourne CBD (one near RMIT) there were a few left but wouldn't suprise me if sold out by midday.

  • There should be plenty around if you dont care about colour

  • Plenty of stock at aldi Marriott waters VIC

  • Picked up a griddle…extremely heavy duty for $16.99.

A pity the pans came coated with enamel…

  • The griddle can be used as a weapon!

  • Thanks op, just got some in Canberra. Heaps left

  • i've always wanted to buy them from ALDI but every time when I lifted the pots or pans I figured why I never bought them in the first place.

They are too heavy to become useful for me :p

Yes, that is both the strong point and the drawback of cast iron - it retains and radiates heat (i.e. cooks through food, not just the surface) far better than other cookware, in large part due to its density.

      • Yep, I suppose I could live with that only if I were very serious about cooking everyday :)

  • cant find these in WA at all. looking for a cast iron grill or pan

  • doh only saw this now…anyone from sydney still able to grab some recently?

    • yes the aldi in Hurstville is selling some left over cast iron grill pans.

      • thanks mate, was hoping to get a frypan…

  • Anybody looking for a cheap, old school cast iron pan, you can currently pick them up at Harris Scarfe for 60% off. I got a small one for $12, and large ones can be had for about $30. Not Lodge quality, but will do the job, once seasoned.

  • This will probably get buried but a heads up, I ended up returning my Enameled Cast Iron cookware due to the following response from Aldi. I know it says it's safe, but not worth the risk imo.

I found someone who asked Aldi via FB and they responded saying it was safe - but had to hear it myself and considering they are made in a China perhaps the quality is not as controlled nor consistent.

    From Aldi AU:

"..we can confirm that the enamel coating on the cast iron range does contain very small amounts of lead and cadmium."

"..the report shows the level of leachable lead and cadmium on all items is well below the acceptable standard for FDA approval and are therefore considered completely safe."

    • It might be worth noting that lead and cadmium are normal for enameled cookware. Le Creuset also contains lead and cadmium. Whether or not all the Aldi ones follow the safety standard is unknown, but the same can be said for any brand you buy really.

      • True. Which is why I'm going to do a bit more research next purchase. I've seen reports explaining that different enamel colouring contains varying levels of metals so need to consider that also.
