Humax 4tune PVR $398 (with Bonus $20 EFTPOS Card) @ Harvey Norman

80

Hey guys. I was looking for a PVR and the Humax 4Tune PVR is the highest rated on Choice website.
Doesn't look to be sold at a lot of sites and comes up as $398 on Harvey Norman website (with a bonus $20 EFTPOS card).
I didn't haggle on price, rocked up to Everton Park and they said I can have it for $380.
RRP is $599 and HN's normal sticker price is $699.

    • Mmmmm yes, something like that.

    1TB for $398, that's a small fourtune

  • This is a good deal. I paid $340 at The Good Guys for the 2tune PVR just 2 weeks ago. The 4tune is much better

That's pretty much normal price for the 2Tune, please hand in your Ozbargain membership.

Someone at work paid $340 at The Good Guys for the 2tune PVR just 2 weeks ago.

        fixed

  • OP here - Mini-review.
Love the fact that I can configure the 4Tune as a server and connect via Windows to copy the recordings to my PC via network.
Hate the fact that I can't find anywhere to configure the recorder to prefer HD channels over SD channels. IE record Channel 90 by defualt instead of Channel 9.
I will try removing the SD channels so it then HAS to record the HD primary channel.

    • Thanks for the review, you should put that in the description as suggested in the Deal Posting Guidelines.

Seems strange you can't record the channel you want, doesn't this defeat the purpose of a pvr?

      • OK… got it working for HD, but a PITA. Had to open guide, browse forward to Have You Been Paying Attention, select CH 13 for HD. Then set the series timer. Done. Repeat for HD shows you want to record for series (Kitchen Nightmare uncensored in HD).
Just a pain you don't get the option to select the actual channel when finding a show. No big deal, I just like it easy to do as I am in IT and deal with that shit on a daily basis.

Which is better; Fetch mighty or this? the Fetch has netflix etc but I hate the advertising.

      According to Choice

      4Tune - 76%
      Mighty - 64%

I actually was looking at a 4Tune for literally a year or so but hated the price (hovering around $600) then Fetch did the Mighty for $400 activated and I bought it months ago.

I absolutely do not regret the purchase the Mighty is a GREAT unit. There are some things it does better than the 4Tune like a better EPG for example and Choice also scores on energy consumption which the Mighty is pretty crap at skewing the results, ALSO things like:

Recordings can be copied for viewing elsewhere Choice says the Mighty can't but I actually do this a lot so that's rubbish it also says it doesn't do 4K which is again rubbish, it says it does no padding…..HELLO RUBBISH (set mine to 5 mins before and 30 after)

So unfortunately Choice have a LOT of things wrong on the review. It's actually a very poor review comparison.

Plus the fact that if you want to do multiroom it's baked into the Mighty and you can just buy Lites for every TV you want to view on.

So I actually don't agree at all with Choice review on this one, but I'm not bagging the 4Tune like I said it was seriously on my list for about a year and if the price had have been $400 ish back then would have bought one but the Mighty won it hands down when it was released at $400 for me.

I'd still buy a Mighty over the 4Tune right now to be honest I'm THAT happy with it but again….my opinion.

  • OP - I am lazy and time poor. I subscribe to Choice online, went by their recommendation. No idea on Fetch.

  • "RRP is $599 and HN's normal sticker price is $699."

That made me laugh. Can't say I'm surprised though.

  • I bought the 4tune for $598 at The Good Guys 5 weeks ago, buying gold services extra with it. Then claimed 120% price back (finding it at a competitor within 30 days) - getting $240 back on a eftpos card and then claimed the $100 price guarantee when the good guys put it on special at $398 2 weeks later($100credit received as SMS and valid for 30 days).

So now I will sit back and accept my $20 credit every 4 months from TGG(comes with gold service extras)

  • IF they bother to send it ,
they WILL need to be reminded you paid extra for bronze service

  • Thanks OP! Got one using Amex $50 credit I save about a month ago!

Not many stores stock it near Sydney and will pick up from Bondi store near my office.

  • One issue with the Fetch is that it relies on Fetch co. existing for its EPG. If they go bust or leave Australia the EPG disappears. This recently happened with the Tivo leaving all Tivo users with perfectly functional boxes (that cost along the lines of $700) that will be useless in October.

The Human 4Tune had heaps of problems and Human were very slow to fix some. I don't know if they have been yet. I was considering one, but gave up on it and got Beyonwiz.

  • Hi Op & anyone else who got one, how's the 4tune going?

I need to get a new pvr for my parents who are in their 70's, they have an old Panasonic pvr that they find very easy to use.
Do you think this would be ok for them?

    • Crap remote. I would strongly suggest a refurbished beyonwiz instead
