  • Does anyone believe these sales are really based on 'cost price'. Would love to walk in with a trade price list and buy for that +5%???!

Its all in the fine print. "cost*" means the paper invoiced cost, which bears little relationship to the real cost, as the word is used by you and me.
Also the headline ("everything") contradicts the fine print. Misleading.
The claim "cost + 5 %" is deceptive. OK, it is a lie, and they should be prosecuted.

  • bs bait for suckers

Nice points freddy and Beatlebob. Comments very welcome

And maybe great to take up with consumer affairs on the competition comission. If its misleading advertisng.

The reality is that it probably is +5% off invoice. It probably doesnt mean there are no marketing rebates etc that a manufacturer gives.

Here its not appropriate for a negative vote

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

Did you realise that not only is it against these guidelines, but the negative votes will hide this deal from others, which is why its o powerful and should only be used appropriately.

When the deal is hidden guess what so are your comments… so your good points are also lost.

      Votes revoked

      • store cost + 5% is what it says..if reality is anything different then its false advertising and worthy of neg

        • There is no way this would be seen as misleading advertising in the law's eyes, only in the eyes of consumers

but the negative votes will hide this deal from others,

I thought that was the whole friggin' point! To avoid wasting peoples time on junk and dishonesty.
Don't you want to weed out the rubbish?
OzBargain is starting to sound like the magazines that don't want bad reviews of any product for fear of antagonising the advertisers.

This is not the place to debate policy or guidelines go to the forums where there are places to put this.

I do counsel you to read the guidelines first so you at least understand what its there for, and what you would then like to see changed.

These sales are a scam, "cost price" often includes a notional percentage of margin for costs incurred by the store (rent, wages, advertising) plus Retravision gets massive cashbacks/spivs from their wholesalers or manufacturers for pushing certain lines. Any product they don't get a kickback on is excluded from the sale.

Wow, it is worse than I thought. How can you not neg such a false promotion?

    This ol' scam again?

  • any better excuse to pi$$ off a tassie?? maybe RV think they are fair game…

  • Ive also recieved these from a few Retravision stores i have purchased from, which were VIC metro stores. My guess is direct marketing.
looks like it may be nationwide??

Ive been to a few of these before, they were tight-lipped aboyut giving prices on the phone, which is fair game considering other retailers would no doubt be calling up to check "cost" pricings by taking 5% off the quoted price.
but when i went into the store they were more than happy to gut the prices pretty deep.
most definately wouldnt be true cost price, but for the average joe that wants a big discount without bulls*** haggling, it wasnt too bad.
Nothing to stop you grabbing that price and keep on shopping round.

Im proud to be a tightass :)

I've seen these several times before. It's just a GIMMICK!
The store cost is as elastic as my jocks. Don't believe it.
Last time they had these I was looking at a stove which they said would be $1200 (cost + 5%). I bought it online on the same day for $800.

I was at a Cost + 5% Retravision sale in Brisbane a few years ago, and i asked what the price would be on a Kodak camera with a sticker price of $149, and the guy said $140 or $145 or something crap like that.
At the time, Harvey Norman had the same camera on special for $99.

Pretty rubbish. What do they mean by "cost", the actual price they bought it for wholesale, or their price + staff costs, rent costs, electricity, etc. factored in to the price.
