Jump on this before the bullshit Netflix tax starts in a month.

    • Tldr?

GST on all imports. No $1000 exemption.

  • Regular buyers keep in mind that X99 motherboards aren't cheap. I'm holding out on Coffee Lake for 6C/12T goodness.

Did you see they had just announced the newer Core X series starting from i5-x (4C/4T) all the way up to i9-x with 18C/36T!!! Plus new chipset X299 to go with it. And I type this on a dual core…

The i9-X is $1999 USD!!!!! ouch

But I hope these X series help drive down the current kaby lake line.

With 18 core CPUs introduced by Intel in Computex, think 6 core is due to become 'entry level' pretty soon…

The top Xeon will have 28 cores and 56 threads.

      • AMD Epyc will have 32 cores and 64 threads, at less power for the same or better performance than Xeon can do currently. I hope for a little price war. Lets see what happens.

does it still matter when people install windows on it?

        • @slowmo: I don't see what Windows/Operating System has to do with it.

        • @slowmo: most install VMware and multiple windows under

    • With multi-threading still being barely used I doubt that.

Pity most programs I use - (Lightroom and Photoshop) still don't fully utilize all these damn cores they keep coming out with.. :(

Just replaced my i7 with a Ryzen 1700 oc to 3.7 on stock cooler and can confirm exports are damn well brisk. The rest seems similar though. We can only hope, Adobe.

      • +2

Adobe will need its own AMD to kick its fat backside before it moves to do anything about it

    • That comment is soo true. I've yet to see all 4 cores run full tilt with many programs that are used on a daily basis - shame really.

how is this value? just get a Ryzen 5 1600 and it'll be matching this thing in single and multicore at a $299AUD price point with insanely cheap mobos

    • Single?

      • Single threaded processes (which only utilise only one thread on a core at a time) vs other single threaded processes.

        • Yes yes. I was just being sarcastic. Ryzen 1600 is 10-20% slower IPC single core. I have the Ryzen 1700 and am acutely aware it's single IPC isn't any better than my 7 year old I7 2600k was.

        • @Unotifoso: To be fair, there isn't much difference in Single Threaded performance between 2nd Gen Core and 7th Gen Core/Ryzen at stock speeds. But the power usage has gone down a lot. If you overclock (GHz for GHz) Ryzen would win

          @The Land of Smeg:

True but Ryzen does hit the OC ceiling at a lower GHz and the power usage increases exponentially to that point. I have mine OC to 3.7 on air with 3200c14 RAM and those temps/wattage/performance seems to be the sweet spot.

To be honest I use Lightroom and Photoshop which are both pretty much hardware agnostic at this point. I went Ryzen more because it made me feel like a teen again. Going for the underdog with tinkering required and a bit of off-the-books performance and risk just seems all that more enticing.

I got ryzen 7 1700x with less than that +/- AU$430. Performance about the same to say the least

      Hey there,
I stopped following most of the Ryzen updates shortly after they arrived. Did major BIOS updates make it through to help single core performance?
This is the sort of thing I remember reading, it would be great if Ryzen recieved patches for it:

      • Single core will always trail the matured Intel architecture in this generation. But successfully running 3200mhz RAM does reduce the gap. Most original reviews used 2400mhz RAM, so you have to dig for re-tests to get a good idea of what you can achieve.

I heard ryzen single core performance still behind Intel. But I got good deal at the time (what comparable Intel can you buy with $430? ) and I don't really push my cpu to max. So yeah why not?

Need to add here, finding AM4 brackets for the coolers was PITA. At that time no one has stock in Australia. Not too many choices with the mobo , and ram choices are relatively limited
