The minimum Status Points required to move to Silver is 450. With redemption flights its important to remember one Airpoints Dollar is equal to one New Zealand Dollar – so this translates to a saving of $48 NZD off your next Air New Zealand flight with this deal.

The Destination Itself

With European charm and South American flair, Buenos Aires has earned the nickname “the Paris of South America.” The city has plenty to offer – from numerous boutiques, operas, street tango dances to the enthused football fans in this cosmopolitan capital. For more on visiting this colourful city. 5 must see attractions in Buenos Aires are –

1.Palermo – Home to Buenos Aires most cosmopolitan and fashionable residents, where grand residential buildings jostle for space with quirky boutiques and some of the city’s finest bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

2.Fair of the Mataderos – Guachos (cowboys) parade on majestic horses and market vendors offer a colorful array of crafts and food, whilst ornately costumed tango dancers ignite the streets with traditional country dancing.

3.Rose Garden Walk – This lush green space is full of color thanks to more than 1,000 species of roses found here.

4.National Museum of Fine Arts – Across 30 rooms and three floors, showcasing international art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Encompassing works of Rembrandt, Goya, Manet, Modigliani, and Picasso.

5.Corrientes Avenue – Where tango dancers have congregated since the booming 1930’s and where Broadway-esque performers riveted audiences.

Also note this will earn you the required 80 status credits to maintain Velocity Gold status, if you're currently on the 'Explore Gold' promotion… just remember to get in the one eligible sector (i.e. find a cheap Virgin Australia flight to take).

Note the rather steep visa/reciprocity fee of USD100/AUD134 to enter Argentina.

Can be avoided if you hold a second passport from an EU country.

Won't it be really cold at that time of year? Great deal otherwise.

    • Similar to Melbourne, but a bit warmer.

      Brazil very nearby.

      • Argentina is in the southern hemisphere like us? It should be Spring leading upto Summer like us here.

        • +1

Yes, and, like Melbourne, can be cold or warm (in the same day).

      • Highs of 21 degree in Buenos Aires in October. It will be much colder further south.

        • Which is why you go North. ;)

        • +1

That time of year should be fine for exploring the north of the country. It's generally fairly dry in winter and early spring.

e.g. A few days in Bs As, then onto Rosario, Cordoba then exploring the Andes from Salta or Jujuy before heading south west to Mendoza for some wine tasting.

And Uruguay is only a 90 minute ferry across the river if you crave a chivito and a glass of tannat.

  • When does the sale end??

Love the detailed write up, thanks OP!

Thanks. I am always tinkering with the format of my writeups and trialing new things. Always open to suggestions, so if you feel I should be covering something. Please let me know :)

  • great bargain, fantastic write up and formatting OP thanks

    • Thanks. Like above let me know if there is something I should be including.

    I'm actually from Buenos Aires.
Very detailed post about the city, but I would like to point out that "guachos" is actually an insult. The word you are looking for is "gauchos" ;).
Furthermore, I believe that the true attractive of Argentina resides in the landscapes it has to offer, such as Iguazú Falls, Bariloche, Perito Moreno Glaciar, etc.

    • I've always been keen on going. Should i go?

      • I always recommend to do tourism in Argentina. People are friendly and the nature is amazing. The food, specially meat is a must as well.
Just google for any of the places I mentioned in my previous post and let the images do the talk :)

        • Its a must see place on my list. Also being a big football fan, I am keen to see a River-Boca game hopefully at the Bombanera with my son!

        • @emirates777:
Haha, careful with that match. The fans are "dangerously passionate".

    • Really sorry. No offence intended! :) I thought about Iguazu Falls but thats a fair way out of Buenos Aires?

      • Most stuff is a long way from Buenos Aires, and the domestic airfares are obscenely expensive (for foreigners - residents get it for a fraction of the cost).

Though one thing that could be added is Montevideo - just a ferry ride away.

  • Does anyone know if it's possible to cancel 1 leg of a flight with Air NZ?

I want to fly to Buenos Aires, but continue on through South America from there and don't plan to return to Aus until next year.

The one-way flight seems to be the same price as the return.

    • Why not to buy one way then?

    • You might do better to snap up some ff points bonuses, then. 45k will get you one way to Santiago.
