Kask Protone Helmet for $299 (Normally $419) at Bike Force Docklands VIC

100

$299 is a great price for a lightweight and aero helmet from a LBS which normally retails for $419. Looks like lots of colours and sizes are available.

Edit: Can be shipped. @Maxx - Thanks for letting us know that it was $15.00 to ship to Sydney.

I normally compare the price on Bike Bug before I buy and Bike Bug have it for $359.99:

I bought a Giro Foray MIPS helmet last month from these guys and they shipped it over night to Sydney! (($15 shipping fee)

Popped into the store on my back home today and pick up one. Absolutely love it!!!!

There is lots of stock - many colours and sizes to choose from. Was told that they are selling fast.

They are happy to ship. Actually saw 4 Protone helmets being packaged up for the delivery courier whilst I was in store. Best to call them if you want to organize shipping.

    You cyclists! You're a laugh a minute.

  • Wow and people complain about iPhone being over priced compared to android …… What does this do that my $30 helmet from anaconda doesn't ?

    • true. I'm of the belief that if I get into a circumstance where I don't want my helmet to crack due to my head smashing the ground… Well, my neck will probably be stuffed for life anyway.

      • It's fine, the brain damage from blunt force trauma will stop you from noticing the stuffed neck so it'll be like it never happened!

Definitely not the cheapest helmet out there.

But it's like comparing a Kia with a BMW.

So you're buying the helmet due to status anxiety?

        • +1

Nope would be buying it for comfort on 8 hour long bikerides, for saving 10 watts less energy riding into a headwind and for getting more airflow across my head to avoid overheating when i am working at 90% of my maximum output on a very hot day.

    • +1

While I would never spend $300 on a helmet, the more expensive options are lighter, provide more airflow to your head and more aerodynamic than the cheaper options. Not worth it unless you do a lot of riding and take it very seriously. Same goes for expensive bikes though.

    • +6

Lightweight, keeps your head cool when you are working very hard and sweating loads, aerodynamic and saves you watts of energy pushing your bike into a headwind.

If none of these things matter to you stick to your $30 helmet from Anaconda/KMart. These aren't meant for recreational cyclists having some leisure time with the kids on a bikepath or somebody having a sedate cruise to work. If you aren't racing, doing Gran Fondos or killing yourself to get on Strava leaderboards this product isn't for you in all the same ways that an overclocked 1080 Ti with a water cooling system isn't for everyone that owns a computer and the same way that Manolo Blahnik shoes aren't for every girl and the same way that a Patek Phillipe watch isn't for every guy!

For me, I actually find the fit much better on the Kask helmets compare to the KMart/Target helmets.

I own a Kask Mojito and before it, I could never find a cheaper helmet that fitted my head really well. Must be the strange shape of my head.

I am not a serious cyclist but for me, $230 at the time for the Mojito was not a huge amount for something that I enjoyed wearing.

You can get a bike helmet that meets Australian standards for $5 at 7/11

I think this is like a lot of items; the die hard people will understand the price and the rest of us plebs will go "wow, that is a lot of money for a helmet".

    • +1

      the die hard people

hopefully the helmet can prevent that.

      • +3

Without the helmet I, presume, you would die easy :)

    • +3

I'm one of those 'die hard' bike people and this doesnt bother me but I often see posts on here where folks are talking about a bargain smartphone for $900 or a bargain camera for $3K or a bargain drone for $1500. Obviously i have a phone but I cant see the point in spending big on a better screen etc and I have zero interest in cameras and drones. I always see those posts and think wow that's a lot of money for those things but i understand that somewhere out thee aer enthiusiast folks that are happy to spend up on their hobby!

Yup, exactly my point. I'm sure the OP has a lot more knowledge about bike helmets than I ever will so let him highlight this to the people who would know and they can make their own judgements on value for money.

  • Prefer the Bontrager Ballista https://www.trekbikes.com/au/en_AU/equipment/cycling-accesso… normally RRP is around the $220 before discounting. https://www.trekbikes.com/au/en_AU/equipment/cycling-accesso…

Ballista comes with a 12 month crash guarantee so if you stack and total your helmet in the 1st 12 months you get a new one for free.

    Also gets great reviews http://www.bikeradar.com/au/road/gear/article/best-aero-road…

Aero helmet, pretty good at cooling. Maybe not as 'Cool' in a fashion sense as a Kask but from a functional perspective better performance and cheaper.

Thanks Op, might get one to wear with my bike I found in the council clean up.

Pushy are also selling off some kask helmets cheap. They don't have the protone but the infinity is $249 down from $419 and the vertigo (probably the worst name for something that goes on your head) is $199 down from $279.

I just bought a Steelcase Leap and a Logitech G900 which are both hideously expensive … so I ain't hating on people who buy this helmet.

The Leap was the most comfortable seat I've tried by a country mile and the G900 is (somewhat unexpectedly) an absurdly good mouse. Can you spend 10% on other things that do the same thing - no. Not exactly the same.

  • I've looked at these helmets previously. Found it interesting that some Aussie sites list the weight at 300-320g (eg, Pushys), and some at 215-250g (eg, Bikebug, BikeForce).

I wonder if some are selling an imported version vs an Australian-distributed one. (Apparently Australian helmet standards require more reinforcement than Euro ones.)
