EOFY Small Car under $20,000

Hi Ozbargaineeee,
Just looking for small car under $20,000 to go to work and back home (Already have an SUV), with so many deals for End of financial year I totally confused and don't know which one is the best.

This is my Criteria :

  • Small car
  • Under $20,000
  • Low interest (i can pay 1/3 of the car price in front)
  • Long term Warranty
  • Automatic Transaction
  • Around Brisbane area (not sure if this can help but I have to enter my postcode in Car dealers websites to get the price, so i'm guessing different price in each state)
  • I'm self employed and have an ABN if this helps.

What do you think of second hand car (2015-2016), I have found Hyundai i30 2016 (19,000Km) for $18,000 ?

Any comment/recommendation will be appreciated.

Yeah that's a crap price, for a 2 year old Hyundai with 19,000kms.

You can buy a brand new one for $20,000. I picked up a Hyundai i30 Active X for $21,000 with floormats, tint and a full tank. (12 months ago)

Should be able to get the base model for 20k.

They are a very comfortable car!

$20k is a lot of money to tie up to just commute in. Halve your budget and get a ….. Corolla. Seriously, though buy something in the Yaris, Jazz, Mazda 2 size, the newest you can get for $10k.

    • old toyotas are the way to go. something 5 years old will be great for getting around.
i sold my 15 year old toyota echo for $3000 to a lawyer wanting a similar short commute supplement to their luxury SUV. they turned up to inspect in a brand new range rover, and we did the sale at their high rise corporate office. i was impressed that they were still able to consider such a cheap run-around, and didnt need something to show off

  • Kia Cerato best value

Don't work for the brand any more but I don't think you could go wrong with the new shape swift :)

    • Don't listen to these internet shills out to get your monies ; )

I saw "small car" and only came in to see if Spackbace had been in… was not disappointed! :D

For the record, I own a Swift, even without Spackbace's wisdom. Great car.

    • Have you switched to a different dealer/franchise, Spackbace?

      • Yep now Toyota after nearly 6 years at Holden/Suzuki :)

        • You won't regret it.

        • @PinzVidz:

Certainly different going from selling $15-35k cars to $100k cars lol

  • Its really funny how second hand cars here are so pricey given new ones are a dime a dollar. My bet is on new is with Suzukis - cheap and cheerful. If you're a big guy, don't go for the swift.

For secondhand cars, my rules are: go with something about 3 - 5 years old and never pay for more than 1.5k below the market value. (Ie, if you can insure it for 10, make sure you get it for 8.5)

My only guess is sellers start high knowing buyers will haggle down.

But in saying that, when buyers will haggle down on a new sale as well, it does seem to make my first point irrelevant and makes you ask the 2nd hand seller what they are smoking.

Hahaha, yeah - also, my opinion is that this is worst with 2nd hand car dealers. I would say safest bet is buying second hand private at some haggled price

  • Gee, don't borrow for a utility buzzbox that is not your main car; it'd be better to borrow for a better main car. For a second car as a commutermobile its all about keeping cost and hassle down, not about trying to show how cool you are to your mates or members of the opposite sex (if you're worried about that just get a bumper sticker saying "My other car is a Bugatti").

Get something cheap and cheerful enough that you can buy with cash on hand. Buy privately if you want to save money, through a dealer if you want to save hassle. But don't borrow for this.

    • You are absolutely right mate, thanks for advice

Thanks guys for all replies, didn't expect that many replies,
discussed with my wife and decided to go for Yaris or i20.

    • Or a Kia Rio, we got one for around $10k with still 4 years Kia warranty left. ( they have 7 years).

Take them all for a drive, you might think one feels a bit better.
