  • planning US trip, would you recommend visiting san Francisco? couldn't see any attractions other than the iconic bridge.

    • +1

      Alcatraz is a must.

    • +2

Alcatraz, riding the trams up and down, Fisherman's Wharf (seals and chowder otherwise not much else), Painted Ladies, the big park… good for a few days at least.

    • +2

Lombard Street. I went around Christmas and didn't realise you had to book Alcatraz weeks/months in advance so I missed out. Next time.

    • I absolutely recommend Alcatraz Island too. It's still memorable to me even though I visited it in the early nineties.

    • Watch The Rock and then go. We stayed at the Fairmont (not the penthouse suite unlike movie, did Connery impression), went to the Palace of Fine Arts (did Connery impression), went to Alcatraz at night (did Connery impression, SWAT team was training as we were leaving). Segway tours are great especially on the steep roads. Eating and drinking culture is similar to Melbourne. Lots of hipster restaurants, cafes, little hole in the wall bars.

EDIT: United used to fly their awful old fleet of planes. Now they have the new Dreamliners for US trips (huge difference).

      • And US$10 for unlimited internet wifi all the way.

        • +1

Yes, wi-fi on the plane makes the 14+ hours much bearable. It is increasingly likely that laptops/tablets will be banned from the cabin for all US international inbound flights so enjoy while you can.

    • Thx for the reply guys ☺

  • Apparently there is a very little add-on $$ amount for people wishing to travel further into US/Canada with American Airline. Which really makes a very attractive deal!

  • I went for a drive around Silicon Valley for a nerdy treasure hunt, looking for all the heavy hitters in all things technology.

Seeing for myself the scale of Google is astounding. Finding the Android statues was a bonus too :)
