Best 4G Wireless Modem/Router for Price - With Ethernet

Hi Everyone,
I've signed up to the Optus 100 Gig $70 Wireless Mobile 4g Plan.
I'm looking at getting a Modem or Router that I can use with Wifi and Ethernet Cable.
I was thinking about buying the huawei b593 v2 4g. Has anyone used this before? Best price I can find online is $150.
Is there anything out there that will supply me with a similar performance at a cheaper rate??
Cheers

  • Dovado Tiny AC plus USB modem?

    • I haven't seen that before, I'll have a quick look up about it online.
      Cheers

      • Check this out :) https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2378508

I use one with a E3372 (Optus I think since it's unlocked) and it's great

        • +1

I have the old version Dovado Pro, an amazing piece of gear. With (I believe) the highest compatibility of modems out there. Also Dovado do regular firmware updates, they don't just sell and forget.

        • Hi there, just wondering whether you can help me… can you use the Optus EE372 with another provider under optus such as Amaysim? I haven't used a 4g modem before so I was wondering whether you can just stick a standard phone sim in it?

        • @imissbeans: Yes you can stick standard phone SIM in it - you may need to change the APN to yesinternet however if it's an Optus-supplied E3372 I do not think you have to do this (from memory)

        • @bdl: thanks so much for getting back to me so fast :) Will try to get this working!

        • @imissbeans: if it doesn't work automatically, from memory settings > advanced settings >profile management … create a "new profile" and add yesinternet as the APN - then select the new profile you created and it should work.

        • @bdl: thanks so much, do you think this is a good option for using extra data I have from an amaysim plan (another number from my main one) and tethering my phone to it or are there better options for this? I have no idea about this stuff, I'm so sorry!

        • @imissbeans: Just watch to make sure you don't go over your monthly allocation of your second plan. This is a good option if you want to use the data at home, if you want to use it when out and about perhaps look at a wifi modem or a second el cheapo handset.

        • @bdl: this is only for use out and about, as we have unlimited internet at home. So maybe then a 4gb wifi modem is more suitable as the only purpose is for when out of the house?

        • @imissbeans: yes i would do that, since battery life is much better on a wifi modem vs a second phone

        • @bdl: thanks heaps! You just helped me so much!!!

Hey I did a bit research for this purpose too.

I'm using e3372 because it has all the bands together with dwr 116 - less than 100.

Only wireless n and not ac so that's the caveat. But can do ethernet

So far I'm happy with the range and speed.

  • The best value 3/4G router is undoutedly the TP Link Mr3420 ~ $45, which is less than a quarter the price of a full size Dovado, which isn't really all that much better - I have both. Plus with the TP Link you can load the great ROOter open source firmware, in fact simple non 4G routers from a number of manufacturers can be loaded with ROOter to convert it to a 3/4G router and then facilitates the tethering of a smart phone to send the signal around the home via the routers WLAN and sametime charges your phone up.

    • Hmmmm…When you say "non 4G routers" do you mean adsl2 routers? Forgive me if this comment is ignorant.

    • Only issue with this is that I would have to have buy the 4G USB. Id rather a modem I could input the SIM card directly to it.
      Cheers

      • Good luck with finding a router with ethernet which takes sim cards.

        • I found one, it's the Optus one I mentioned in the start of the post? Just wanted to know if there was a cheaper one

  • For a thrifty way, you could use your old phone as a wireless hot spot. Possibly connect it to OTG cable and USB Ethernet dongle for cable ethernet connection.

    • Would it be possible to connect through personal hotspot? Via Wire?

      • I don't know, haven't really tried. Why do you need to connect by cable? It isn't going to make your internet any faster.

        • Because my PC doesn't have wifi. It worked via cable anyway!

        • @Sacco07: otg cable?

  • Ill tell you about my experience I have been using e3372 because it has all the bands together with dwr 116.
    capable of connecting to ethernet!
