    You're doing it wrong.

Look at the actual kwh base rates for your utilities first, then factor in the discount. Do the same for gas, look at the cost per mj.

Lots of companies offer 20-30% discount but have astronomically high base rates.

    • It would be interesting to know the % of customers on these base rates. Each company has been promoting discounts for years. For ACCC purposes, when does the promotional rate become the business as usual rate?

      • +1

I've held the opinion for a while than a 20% discount is the base rate. Utility companies are falling over themselves to win the marketing war with the biggest discount percentage whilst raising base rates so they still make a profit. It's a rather absurd situation all round and has been for some time.

    • Even thats not quite right. Many bump up the daily supply charge too. You need a spreadsheet to work it out. Do the comparison based on your annual usage/consumption

There is no set price. The model is charge as much as possible to each individual so the highest price is advertised online. The advertised price may be reduced if you visit the websites repeatedly without signing up to anything. Find the cheapest online, write down the names of the top 5 or 10 cheapest providers, find their contact details and start playing them off against each other for price.

The system is purposely created to allow the pricing to be very confusing to make it hard to compare. Avoid any providers who attempt to sell tiered rates obviously. You will need to be very careful to calculate exactly what you would pay based on your expected usage, it will take some mental effort and may take a lot of your time.

Start with your current provider, call and be very explicit in what you want: ask for a specific supply and usage charge that is 10% below your current provider. Do not accept any counter offers unless you carefully calculate exactly what you will pay. Do not accept any offers that you cannot calculate to compare properly. Do not accept time wasting. Remember the retailer you are negotiating with has all the calculations already and is attempting to deceive you into paying more for energy. Be blunt: cheaper price or you leave.

After the first successful price reduction start again and get the cheapest price.

As you carry out this tedious exercise using the steaming turd that is Australia's electricity system consider not voting for Liberal/Labour since they implemented this crap at your expense. Even write a letter explaining that you aren't voting for them based on their atrocious actions that are robbing you to pay large business owners who are mostly based overseas and often are the governments of other nations. Congrats, you're subsidising another countries electricity costs!

    • During energy privatization one frequently used mantra was that more competition yields lower prices. I fail to see how multiple retailers, all selling an identical product, can be more efficient than one retailer that's not price gouging the public.

Previously a government owned retailer didn't need to advertise. Now we have dozens of large and small retailers with many spending millions of dollars per year to advertise. Customers bear that cost. Additionally they now all need multiple sets of office buildings, retail spaces, sales people, lawyers, accountants, receptionists etc, where previously only one or none was required. That's supposed to be more efficient and lower costs?

      • Yep. Look at what happened to CTP motor vehicle insurance in NSW over the last 10 years. premiums are going through the roof now.

thanks guys! look like I need to stay over night to do some research….

Also remember to factor in the "daily charge" as well as the per KWH charge, but the daily fee might be set by the state, I can't remember.

      • Nope. Its highly variable as well

  • Energy Australia was best when i did it a few weeks ago

AGL is shit house. Stay away from them

    Try this: https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

I'm with Diamond Energy, they are not always the cheapest but they are still very competitive, they are very supportive of green energy and their service is top notch.

  • 44% with energy Australia. I've posted previously about how I got it.

    • wow! hhhhhhowww?

    • 44% is huge.
Where are you? I have never seen such a great discount in QLD.
Also what is the base rate before discount (c/Kwh) they charge you for tariff 11 (peak) and tariff 33. Does the discount apply to supply charge as well? And how much is the suplly charge ($/day)? I apologise for all the questions, but 44% discount made me very interested…

        I'm in Victoria.

        All including GST.

        Daily supply is approx $1.07
Usage is approx $0.30c per kwh

No peak/off peak here, same tariff all day-everyday.

Discount is on usage only. It is by far the cheapest in Vic at the moment that I can find for my address.

When I spoke to the rep at EA I asked why so huge and why are we not offered this at sign up but only circa 30%? He said, profit margins are low on power, especially electricity and their aim is to charge as much as they can. With some customers they can charge 30c per kwh and others they need to offer discounts to keep them. These discounts eat into their profits which are then supplemented by those that are paying more. Seems obvious, but it's a disgusting business model, especially for the elderly or less astute.

        p.s. sorry for delayed reply.

        • Thanks Xiongmao.
That is a really good discount.
          $0.30/kwh-44%=$0.168/kwh
In QLD it is more expensive. Best discount I have heard of is 21% on $0.255860 (peak with Origin):
          $0.25586/kwh-21%=$0.2021294/kwh inc gst
          Discount is on usage only.
Daily supply is $1.281170 inc gst

  • Don't look at the discount rate. It's meaningless. For example, Alinta Energy offered me a 32% discount in SA, but their rate for electricity was so high that Origin with only a 10% discount was actually cheaper.

Also it's worthwhile looking at how the pricing is structured. Usually the first 11 kWh consumed per day is at a lower rate, before a higher price kicks in for the rest. Some providers lure customers in by providing generous discounts on just the first three kWh used per day.

  • As with other posts you gotta check the tariff rates and daily supply charge less the discount. I'm with Click which offers 20% off the total bill. Some suppliers offer discount off of tariff rates (usage).
Set yourself up an excel sheet and start collecting the data so you can run the numbers yourself

  • I m in Perth. Am i stuck with Synergy? I don't see any other electricity service provider here…..

    • +1

Yes you are stuck with Synergy as Perth isn't part of the Australian Electricity Market.

But that's actually a good thing. You don't have to deal with on and off peak power prices, and you pay a lot less overall than a lot of people in the eastern states.

  • I get 28% off usage AND supply charges with Origin. I haven't been able to get another energy provider to beat that rate yet.

    • Oh and i even got Origin to give me $75 of extra credit :)

    • How'd you manage to get this mate?

      • Well at first I was on the 28% off usage plan (Origin Maximizer). After about 6 months I got a better deal from Powershop and I asked Origin if they could match the same and they rep i spoke to said they could not. SO i went ahead and told Powershop to go ahead an initiate the transfer. A few days later an Origin rep called my up and said they could see that I am transferring out of Origin and asked if they could do anything to make me stay. I said the plan Powershop was offering could save me more. Then the rep said that she could see that my usage bills are quite low per quarter (less than $200) so I could qualify for a plan that has 28% off both supply AND usage. Then I said that Powershop was also offering a $75 joining bonus and the rep said she would be happy to match that with a one time credit into my account.

Now no matter what I do, no other provider seems to be able to beat this rate in Victoria..I pay about $100 per quarter now

  • I am currently getting 25% off if I pay on time through Click Energy but to get this I had to go through a third party One Big Switch!. I have been with Click energy for about 3 years and this is the best deal so far( was 15% before this latest offer) Really happy with the discount(calculated on current bill and comes off next) Also they give you an option to pay a set amount monthly-say$100 so you don't get bill shock! This happens when they don't actually come to your house to read meter but estimate cost then read the actual meter on third month! Not sure if this offer is available in Queensland !

  • hi all, are those charges reasonable? origin offered 16%, those charges are before 1/7/17

Peak Usage cents per kWh 25.5860 (GST INC)
Supply Charge cents per day 128.1170 (GST INC)

    • That usage charge is low, but the supply charge is high. If you're a large consumer, it could be okay, a small consumer it's poor.
How do you compare offers? Create a spreadsheet with your consumption details for as far back as you've got, ie kWh and days from each bill. Put in the offer details (including discounts, summer or winter pricing where it exists, any price steps in consumption, etc … it can get complex), and calculate what your supply and consumption would have cost over the long term with that offer. A great offer for one consumer can be a crap offer for you.
Also note, some suppliers offer discount on both supply and consumption, but most only on consumption. Approx half my bill is the daily supply charge. When you do get your best deal, it's highly likely it won't be so good after the next price rise, so you might have to start over…

Edit: And solar feed in tariff if relevant

  • Some companies offer high discount rates on usage, but if you're like me, and supply to property makes up major portion of bill, you have to look at one that offers you a discount on the whole bill, supply included.
I am with Red, and not only were my rates cheaper than what i could negotiate with AGL, they also give discount of 12% of total bill.
Tried to give AGL chance to match it, not interested.

  • there is a government energy comparison website you should use to narrow the search.

    https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

there may be one for Qld also.

then see how they do it.
they can be a good guide even if you don't calculate the real costs for retailers.

then check the base rate and discounts.
best go with discounts on total bill.
work it out for each retailer.

am with lumo in victoria and sydney and even a lower rate on the total bill including useage beats a huge rate just on usage.

    check the figures.
pick the one with the total lowest cost.

best use actual useage and actual base rates and apply discounts as retailers play with base rates and discounts.

  • I'm in Sydney. Red Energy sales rep knocked on my door this afternoon.

I was offered and accepted the following electricity and gas rates. Prices are fixed for 12 months, there is no locked in contract and no early termination fees.

Numbers below are excl GST and after 10% off total bill.

    First 1000 kWh/qtr 20.07c/kWh
    Next 750 kWh/qtr 19.62c/kWh
    Balance 18.54c/kWh
    Service 76.28c/day

    First 20.712 (MJ/day) 3.159c/MJ
    Next 20.384 (MJ/day) 2.11c/MJ
    Next 49.315 (MJ/day) 1.946/MJ
    Next 2654.794 (MJ/day) 1.927/MJ
    Service 48.61c/day

I think these are good rates. Wanted to share to help people bargain for better rates.

  • One big switch got a new offer via Alinta Energy

30% off your electricity usage charges based on Alinta Energy's published Standing Tariffs when you pay on time and in full

18% off your natural gas usage charges based on Alinta Energy's published Standing Tariffs when you pay on time and in full

Rather than moving I called up my Energy Australia and they happily matched the 30% off electricity. (Previously on 20% discount on pay on time, which make me wonder how much money they have been skimming from elderly people who have not idea)

    • says 25% on their website, how can I get 30%?? thanks!!

      • You just call your energy company and bargain.

        https://www.onebigswitch.com.au/news/category/energy

You can just register and see the 30% offer.

      • I'm on Sunshine Coast. One Big Switch only offers me one energy co, Powershop. The Alinta 30% offer must be for a different location.

  • Because of the nature of utility charging (fixed daily connection charge plus usage charge), different contracts suit different households. Ie Heavy usage households should go for low usage charge, while light usage households go for low daily charge. The best way to compare contracts is to collate as much of your (kWh) usage history as possible, then create a spreadsheet that costs that usage using your current and all potential offers. Try and have your usage data match whole years to minimise seasonal variation.
That said, Alinta has a very good offer for SE Qld, probably the best offer for typical households. It's about 8% cheaper for my usage than my current supplier (Red).
