  • Is there any reason you can't save ~$40 and buy the OEM version? I know you're only "supposed" to be able to buy it with a HW purchase, but I'm yet to come across a retailer who won't do an end-run around that! ;)

    • I plan to use it in a Virtual Machine so not sure about the legalities of using OEM. Also I like being able to move it around and if it fails validation to be able to call up Microsoft and tell them I HAVE the right to re-install on any bloody machine I like! :P

      • Yep, fair enough! You're right on the money with the licencing too…one time PC use only; although I'd just do it continually & blame theh "crash & reinstall" cycle! :p

Oh, and FWIW, this looks like a good deal, aussie B&M store so you're gonna walk out with a ridgy-didge product this time I suspect! ;)

  • Is there a reason you need Ultimate, seeing as it mainly adds extra languages?

  • This is great value. Harvey Norman want over $400…

BTW - EBAY is cheaper but 99% are fake. If you buy off EBAY ring Microsoft to confirm the validity of the CD key - I've bought 3 times for 3 fakes….

      Careful

I've heard people say that MS could not tell them if it was a technet/msdn key (which will expire) or a retail key (which won't expire). That strikes me as a little odd, but I haven't looked further as I simply refuse to buy them off ebay.

      • MS will tell you if your key is a technet/MSDN one. You call them on 13 20 58 and they'll tell you.

The fakes look like the real thing, but all have MSDN/technet keys which do activate, but will more than likely stop working in the future.

The guy I bought my 2nd fake off had sold over a hundred, and not one other user realised they'd bought fakes…

The fakes sell for $10usd in Thailand…

Now, before anyone goes getting their moral high-horse; this is what I would do in your circumstance; however, I am not a role model:

      1. You've paid legitimately through ebay, ostensibly a bona-fide business.
      2. Presumably you have a tax invoice for your purchase? All ebayers have to IIRC!
      3. Contact ebay, paypal & Microsoft…you are entitled to a refund!
      4. If point 3 fails, use the copy you paid for and download RemoveWAT!
      5. Following the "reasonable person" rule of thumb, no court in the land would convict you for software piracy as you've acted in good faith!

I've never seen this model tested; and I'm not saying it's the right thing to do; but I'd be so filthy that I'd do it just because it's what I believe is fair! ;)

      • +2

I'm pretty sure handling stolen goods is against the law too. And point 5, a "reasonable person" would probably think $20 or so for Ultimate isn't all that legit.
If you DID pay $200 on e-bay, you would definitely try these steps.

        • Yep, agreed! Since GWH didn't state what the price was, I was simply working under the assumption that a reasonable price was paid! ;)

        1. You don't pay eBay, you pay the seller in a private transaction. Ebay are not involved in the transaction in any way. It's exactly the same as the way that a Newspaper is not involved when you buy from HN after reading an advert they lodged in the paper.

        2. No, Ebayers don't have to issue a Tax Invoice. In fact, I think it is illegal to issue a tax invoice if you don't have a ABN?

        3. If you claim as fake on Paypal, you WILL get a refund - but you must get written notification from M$ first (to use as evidence in the Paypal claim).

          1. Yes, I know ebay do try to absolve themselves of responsibility in that manner. However, I think you'll agree that if they continue to accept the ongoing listing long term; and accept their repeated payment from same; they should also accept a measure of liability! I'd actually like to see that one tested in court! After all, newspapers refuse to accept dodgy ads once they know about them, why should ebay be allowed to bury their head in the sand and still collect rectal fees! ;)

          2. I only buy from well established ebay business sellers who state they offer a tax invoice, of course anything less is a car-boot sale! :p

          3. Agreed, I don't reckon Bill would quibble about providing that; it would be nice to see them take ebay to task on their complicity in software piracy! ;)

Got one of those $19 usb 3.5" external sata enclosures (listed in the flyer). Aluminium case. Works well.

Got it because the power supply on my friends Western Digital external case stopped working and it was cheaper and easier to buy one of these and replace the case than to do the run around trying to track down a replacement power supply.

  • thats realy cheap - but if you order it its still at the higher price

Horrible website, can't find the deal at all on there besides the pdf catalogue.

  • Great price…just can't find the product on the website.

  • Saw it on shopping square for $214.95 plus postage. That is where I purchased my version Win 7 Pro. Was the best price I could find on net. Arrived in under a week.

I have confirmed that NSCOM Erina (Central Coast) does have the $239 promotion for Win 7 Ultimate.

    • Did they mention if they were going to adjust their internet price to reflect the promotion?

      • Sorry, I neglected to ask about that one. :)

Just called NSCOM (Hornsby) to confirm price. All seems in order.

    Just a bad website?

  • Can someone please help me.

I don't understand why people think this is a good deal when you can buy it for less at shopping square, including delivery to your door?

    am I missing something?

    • Because this is a RETAIL version (ie you can install on one machine, uninstall, then install on a new one) not an OEM copy (OEM technically "bonds" with the machine you first install it on, you're not supposed to "move" it to a new machine).

      • thanks cap_n - never knew what OEM restrictions were ^_^

        • Haha, yeah most people couldn't care less about the restrictions imposed on my Microsoft. But then again most people won't install their copy of Windows on more than 1 machine anyways.

          • @Cap N: Well I definitely won't be, so happy to save the few bucks. cheers!

  • (edit)…taking out my comment about offerme. since it seems fake, according to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/31054

  • come on peoples the store is small they can't update the website because its in the catalog man i find heaps of Game prices that are lower in catalog then in the website same goes for EB Games. They have the best prices on PC hardware.

  • You can tell if your software is genuine yourself once installed by looking at the Product ID in Windows (that is different from the product key that comes with your media)

    More about it here:
    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thr…

If you have Windows 7 Ultimate you will have a product ID (PID) that looks something like this:
    12345-067-1234567-54321

To check your PID press the win key and pause at the same time, or open system properties through the control panel, scroll down to activation section and look at the PID,

The portion you are interested in is the three digit section, if it is 065, 066, 067 then you almost certainly have a fake version of Windows 7 Ultimate.

  • Who cares? I've been running illegitimate versions for a while just to circumvent the upgrade needs on the legit copies I actually own… (bought through student deals)

Good deal though if you feel the need to purchase a retail copy of windows

Office work will price match + 5% off. :)

    • Good call, I'll bet they were happy about that too! :)

  • Beware - NSCOM sent me the Counterfiet Windows Ultimate Retail,
had the "rectoveryour" spelling mistake on back of pack, Hologram lifted off the disc when picked up, "made in usa" on COA (reportedly uncommen for legit versions) COA metal strip Stuck on by extra bit of paper at back not in the paper fibre

NSCOM told me to send it back for a refund, They have recieved it, But Still no Refund
looking like i done my money and dont have the product anymore

The other products i got from them are good

But the Windows 7 that i was sent is defienety counterfiet

and NSCOM have not honoured the refund - Will update if the refund comes thru

    • Refund honoured after a long delay and abit of nagging required
