They seem to have another one with the same model number (KU 8000) at a Lower price point: $799

How are these new presale ones different?

    • Good catch. The $799 one is only available for Melbourne metro area vs Sydney and Melbourne, plus one is smart, one is dumb, plus air mouse, plus wifi.

      • +1

Only available in Melbourne & Sydney, suggest you amend the title

    • I think the difference is wifi, I could be wrong

    • The presale one has "Smart" features and is internet-connected.

  • Wow, actually impressed with this price.

  • It would have been amazing if this TV was 3D… Great price - I like the picture clarity- was surprised..

Does anybody even use 3D anymore?

      • I never got into 3D in the first place - always new it would be a fad, but would nevertheless like the option of watching the back catalogue of notable 3D titles.

      • +1

I absolutely love 3D, and think the home 3D experience is usually better than at the cinema, with the right setup (I use a DLP projector).

Here's two compelling reasons for 3D:

        1) Virtual Reality.

VR & AR is going to change the way our species interfaces digitally. It's difficult to understate how big VR will be. However, 2D projection with VR is a turd - it's like turning an elevator into a projection room, it doesn't work. Without stereoscopic, VR just isn't nearly as convincing.

In much the way you can watch 3D movies on the PlaystationVR, other VR headsets will before long be backward compatible with 3D movies, and all good new content (180 degrees, 360 degrees or otherwise) will be created in 3D.

        2) Rarity.

3D is more than a fad. It was a fad in the 80's with red/blue 3D, because it was shite. Today, 3D sells a lot less units, but currently the only way to obtain 3D films is via Blu-Ray. There's no digital download of 3D (yet).

This will lead to many 3D films on BluRay retaining, if not increasing in value. If you look at the cost of diamond editions of 3D Lion King for example (propped up by Disney's scarcity vault program), it'll give you an idea of how, unlike ordinary discs, which will go down in value, 3D discs are actually worth keeping as they can retain or increase in value, owing to their relative scarcity.

        • Thank God !! there is someone in this world who likes to watch 3D movies on TV - Jeez.. negs

        • +1

@smiles: Love it. Most filmmakers I know agree. It's like it's 1997, and someone's getting around with a mobile phone and folks are saying "A phone for your pocket? Why bother? It's just a fad." Being versed in 3D is going to pay dividends inside 8 years.

        • +1

@smiles: I loved it, sad it never caught on.

      • 3D is staying in cinemas and moving to ps vr for Sony

    • From what i read no one is making 3D TV anymore

      • +1

Sony are moving 3D to PS VR

I'm no longer sure if saying 'Samsung panel' is a positive thing or not…

    • +1

I consider it a negative. Just google "Samsung TV black lines" to find a lot of people around the world that had panels fail early but out of warranty and Samsung said tough luck. I was one of them that paid 1200 for a tv that lasted 2 years.

      • I've had mine repaired twice out of warranty, the last time was almost 2 years past and needed a new panel… They grumbled but I made my rights under the ACL quite clear…. Despite fixing out of warranty I would not buy a Samsung again due to customer service.

      • Most big brands use Samsung panels

Can anyone give some comment on the quality of the screen. I am not bothered about the 'smart' features.

This vs the soniq / akai / jvc in terms of the screen.

      I own 2 65" 4K TVs:-

The first, a Soniq 65" 4K Smart TV - $999 last year. It's ok, no ARC but fit enough for purpose. 3 yr warranty, extended to 4 if you did a customer survey helps make it a good buy. Simply replace when it dies with a 75" etc.

I mainly use it with a dedicated HTPC running in native 4K. FTA is ok though. It drives an "oldie but goodie Yamaha DSP-A1 AV amp" with quite high-end 7.1 speaker setup.

For the second I went through and returned a $799 Aldi and $799 Polaroid 4K 65". Both develop faults within a couple of weeks and both had poor backlight consistency - noticeable when watching sports more than normal TV, e.g. car racing tracks being mainly grey really showed up badly. Both these TVs were imported by the same people, Tempo. The remote codes were the same etc. I would not recommend.

I eventually settled on a 65" 4K by Changhong from Bing Lee again for $799 in their January sale It's actually very good, certainly better than the others I tried and up there with some the cheaper versions of the big-name TVs. It has functioning ARC, 3 HDMI inputs and good backlighting consistency. It also has a 3 year warranty and I'm very happy with it and frankly would have bought it over the Soniq too.

It's used mainly with an HTPC but also a Foxtel IQ3 plus occasional FTA. It's internal FTA tuner works better than the Foxtel one and given we live in a dodgy area for digital reception it's sometimes necessary to use the TV tuner instead. ARC works ok across the board.

Bottom line - go for the Changhong if you want a cheap set from a B&M store. I'll leave others to comment on Kogan as I have no direct experience.

      • Thanks mate I'll go the Changhong :) much appreciated for this comment.

      • Only 4K not HDR. Huge difference in picture quality

        • +1

Good point, buy not as huge as the price difference

  • Best pricing on B grade panels - not premium anymore - if you can source factory second panels from Samsung outlets be better but cant go wrong with these.

  • Hi All,
does anyone knows if this comes with Multi PVR? or just single PVR? Website only mention PVR. Thanks.

    • assume its single pvr

  • How long does it take to boot up?

Sold the 8yr old 46 inch Sony Bravia for $250 so thought I'd take a punt haha

  • +2

Meh, not available in Brisbane - you probably should put it in the title: Only available in Melbourne & Sydney

    • Yep. It's pretty bad that they don't service other major areas.

    Premium Samsung Panel

    Brightness 280cd/m²

    🤷🏼‍♂️

    • +1

      Is this good or bad?

    • Indeed. These would be last generation, lower quality panels (both in a product lineup and in a production sense) that Samsung didn't want to put in its own TVs. Not exactly the greatest indicator of quality.

  • Series 8 KU8000
Does this mean they are using the 2016 Samsung panels?

  • HDR? Brightness in nits?

  • +2

So they wanna take and keep people's money for two months before the TVs ship? Will they share the interest with the customers afterwards?

  • 50HZ refresh rate
    6ms response rate

  • No HDR.

  • If you don't want to wait for 2 months, pay $1099 and get this.. delivery extra
