Great prices for return flights to Tokyo on a full service airline.

From IWTF (thanks wizedz):

Philippine Airlines are having a sale on flights to Tokyo - Travel in July - Aug/17, Oct - Nov/17 and Jan - Mar/18. Prices includes Bags + Meals. All flights are via Manila. Most stopovers are just a few hours, but for the longer flights you can get out for some sightseeing as Australians do not need a visa for the Philippines.

How many times have you been?

        • +1
        • more like the tour guide wasn't bothered to take you up there so he made that as an excuse.

Fujisan from the Shinkansen, May 22 and June 2: https://imgur.com/a/agLga

        • @supaderp: She did and I was disappointed.

        • @Bargain Zombies:

It's so you think you got the 99% of the time experience instead of feeling ripped off.

I've seen Mt. Fuji view better than the photo. Check the weather before you go.

      • +1

+1 I've seen it clearly on several occasions without checking the weather. BZ is trolling.

      • +1

I've only been to fuji once and I saw it clearly. What a great sight it was too.

    • +1

"don't bother" seems a bit strong, but Fuji san is often covered in cloud. I've been by 3 times on the shinkansen and it has always been covered in cloud. Like anything you see that involves nature, go expecting it may not be perfect.

    • There are right and wrong times to visit Mount Fuji (from my research).

Besides there is more to see than just mount Fuji in Japan.

    • Did you mean climb the mountain itself?

    • I think you meant climbing the actual Mountain? I once saw NHK doco about rubbish/waste management in Fuji Mountain and it was true - at the top of the mountain it's pretty barren. And since you can only climb during summer, most of you see is dirt - not many vegetation grow on the mountain. But then again I've never climbed it so NHK may be wrong…

    Philippine Airlines? No thanks

    • +1

      Why?

      • I just came back with Philippine Airlines, terrible, 3 out of my 4 flights with them were delayed. foods were really terrible (I couldn't even be bother to finish the dinner). the seat is really small, no tv/entertainment unit, and the price for the wifi is crazy, i think it was around usd40 for 8hours!

        • Interesting. I've had good experiences. Something like wifi cost wouldn't personally bother me though (as I don't have a need to use it).

I had a tv in my experiences so you appear to have received a service I also would be slightly displeased with.

  • Hmm..
Going to the flippers then Guam then Tokyo might make a nice holiday.

  • +3

    Decent prices.

Wish Jetstar hadn't stopped their flights from Melbourne though. It'll never be affordable enough for my liking ever again now. :(

    • +1

how so? arent japan airlines & qantas running sales at the moment for about $620? this is comparable to jetstar pricing but full service.. this is only $50 less but stop over

      • +3

i dunno, i paid $375 return on jetstar with a 1.5hr stop in the goldcoast (from melb). $620 is considerably more expensive…

        • Yeah but a few extra hours, an additional transit, extra for luggage and food and entertainment, no FF points etc = not worth the saving for some people.

      • +2

Because during Jetstar's sales, there were ones you only pay one way and get return free. So it was possible to have a return flight to Tokyo from Melbourne for between 260 and 360 bucks.

I was planning on doing it a third time before they suddenly got rid of the Melbourne flights. Having to go to Cairns first and leave it last removes the cheapness. And just adds to my stress, to be honest.

And lets be honest, Qantas will never have fares comparable to that.

        • +1

great point re: 2-4-1 bargains. rip ;(

        • +1

          @phat-dave: Yup… :(

Could legit go every year at that price. Without a second thought.

      • Really? Last time I checked it was 1000+

    • Yeah it was good with Jetstar, but now with Qantas taking over the route and Japan Airlines coming into play, it's still pretty good in comparison.

When you add your luggage/meal/entertainment on Jetstar, it worked out to being the same price in the end.

      • +1

Probably, I never did that though. Just traveled with a backpack and some music/3DS/sleep for entertainment.

    Philippine airlines are terrible.

    Ancient planes with in-seat ashtrays
No decent inflight entertainment - limited selection of old movies on an ipad IF you are lucky or use your own device via wifi (that doesnt work well)
Food is terrible (even worse than usual on a plane)
Manila is a terrible stopover, a dirty, hot ageing airport

Although they are very generous with the San Miguel

    • +7

very generous with the San Miguel

That's basically all that matters, right? That, and not crashing.

      • +3

I'd pay 100 more to go with Japan airlines from Melbourne and drink Asahi!

      • +2

And ashtrays - hallelujah we can smoke again.

    • +1

I always find the worst part of travelling to Manila, no matter the airline, is having to listen to some middle-aged hobo talk about what he is going to do (read how many he is going to "do") when he gets there.

      • +1

        Weetbix?

        • Likely something with a slightly more Asian flavour..

    • Really? I find them on about par with Qantas and Malaysia Airlines. A step below Singapore Airlines. And better than Jetstar, AirAsia, Cebu Pacific etc.
I thought Qantas food is the worst ive had.
The PAL inflight entertainment is a little painful if you're not aware/prepared before getting on the plane, but I prefer it on my own device personally.
If you have a long stop over, go to Taguig - Bonifacio Global City - nice area. Or Makati if you want malls. Or Mall of Asia in Pasay is close by the Airport, and is abolutely huge! (Top 10 largest in the world i believe). Just be prepared for the traffic if you go anywhere.

Bought tickets to Tokyo (from Adelaide) with Cathay Pacific for $750 last night. Happy to pay the premium for Cathay vs this option.

Looks like you don't need ozbargain anymore 💸💸💸💸💸

  • I am looking for flights during April next year. Any others good deals around? Direct flight preferred :)

I book $690 with JAL from Melb but there's no way that price is around now :)

      • yeah.. the current prices are around $1100 :(

      • Agreed … I'm ready to push the "buy" button if/when JAL have specials to J-land (I'm so over QF/JQ) but JAL never seem to have any ? I must've missed that $690 from MEL (and JAL don't seem to do email promos) …

        • JAL amazing service if you get a chance to go with them. Try ANA.

    • Same here! End of March though for me.
