This is the base level Asus RoG Strix 1080 which has a lower clock speed out of the box. Real world difference isn't that big compared to the O8G model which is significantly more expensive.

As always with GPUs, the silicon lottery will determine just what the card clocks at but for under $700 this is a good price for one of the best third party 1080's on the market with excellent thermal performance.

Note that the item is temporarily out of stock however Amazon generally do not take long to restock and from memory they don't take payment until the item is processed for shipping.

Obligatory first post, hope I didn't screw this up comment.

Edit: Just noticed the Turbo model can be had for ~641AUD delivered here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDUVJ2M
I'd spend the extra money myself but it's a good option for those who have a tighter budget.

The Turbo deal is still active

  • RGB master race doosh doosh doosh!

  • All these good nvidia deals recently! How long would amazon take to restock?

  • +1

Cheaper than 1070s at MSY lel. \o/

    • because 1060 and 1070's are sold out due to mining. 1080 isn't a very good mining card so it's now cheaper. supply and demand.

  • +2

Upvoted for a pretty good deal for a L plater

  • is it because vega is on the line?

    • I don't think so. Vega is still probably a month away from going on sale, longer for the third party cards I suspect.

Might see a price drop in a month or so on NVIDIA cards. Then again, might not.

First off, great card for a really good price!

Just a word of warning though, ASUS don't provide an international warranty IIRC. Amazon are great with replacements for DoA cards, and will help you out if there's problems in the first 12 months, but you're on your own after that.

EVGA are the only NVIDIA AIB I'm aware of that do provide an international warranty.

    • +1

..and an AMAZING warranty at that. People need to be more aware of this IMO, as the last time they were in the market for graphics cards, it was very likely that EVGA was priced quite a few levels above the rest, this isn't the case with the 1060/70/80 market.
EVGA provide some of, if not the best warranties for consumer level hardware in the industry. When I brought my 1080's last black friday, They were absolutely what I was waiting for.

      • I can vouch for EVGA's RMA process. Sent them my dead 980, they sent me a new (reconditioned) one back. No questions asked.

  • Damn regretted buying the MSI 1070 that was up before this. But I guess it don't matter gaming at 1080p

    • You can probably cancel the order but at 1080p a 1070 is more than enough.

      • +3

1070 is more than enough but if he goes overkill for the same price with the 1080 it'll be more futureproof

        • +1, completely agree

    • dude are you even 4k bro

    • +2

Sell it on Gumtree for at least RRP, possibly more, and buy this?
The demand is really high for the GTX1070 as it mines Ethereum faster than the 1080

      • Why does it mine faster when it has less RSM and processing power…?

        • Faster (per dollar of purchase price and power draw).

        • +1

Different memory configuration, GDDR5 as opposed to GDDR5X on the 1080.

        • +1

          exactly as @airal3rt said above.
I have witnessed, in person, a friend of mine trade hist GTX1080 for a GTX1070 with a stranger from gumtree because of this.

          https://whattomine.com

          Turn on 1x 1070, it's 28mh/s
          Turn on 1x 1080, it's 21mh/s

          GDDR5 vs GDDR5X

Edit: P.S. Do it sooner rather than later if you want a 'free upgrade'. I expect mining will become unprofitable for many within the next 2 months due to rising difficulty. Once this happens, the GTX1070 will fall in price.
Mining calculators like the one I linked to are too optimistic, since they assume static difficulty.

  • Can this be used with 450 Watts PSU?

    • +2

According to this Tom's hardware test (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-…) a 1080 (not specifically this one) draws 173 watts on average gaming (with spikes up to 311 watts).

So add 311 as your worst case for the GPU, you CPU, motherboard, hard drive(s) and any other components you have in your machine factor in some inefficiency in your power supply and the answer is you would at best be borderline. If it were me I wouldn't be doing it.

    • Yes.

      500W is recommended by Nvidia.

    • It can, but it shouldn't.
I'd go with 550 watts minimum.
The PSU will get less efficient as you run near capacity.

  • Thanks!!!

Heads up though, came up with $23 shipping. I'm proceeding anyway…

Be careful paying in AUD, you get the poor amazon exchange rate and then your bank, for example ING, may also slug you extra transaction fee on top of this because it's a foreign transaction.

  • How did he get $641 AUD delivered on the Turbo?

When I go to checkout I get $660?

    • +1

Checkout in USD and let your card handle the transaction (28degrees or City Bank since they have no international transaction fee)

    • Pay in USD, Amazon conversion process are often inflated when paying in AUD.

      • Thanks for the reply guys. Problem is they're out of stock and I need a card asap. How long generally till I actually receive the card. 2 weeks if lucky?

        • The last item I ordered from Amazon arrived 9 days after ordering. Obviously this can vary but generally two weeks has been about right

  • About the ASUS 1080 Turbo, forget trying to overclock, try under volting.

Keep the high performance level of 1080, get the lower price ($56) of the Turbo and benefit from less power consumption and heat generated by under volting.

Performance per $ would be exceptional.

  • Geez I paid about double this on release cause I was impatient.

  • I managed to snap one up last night, thanks OP.

Does Amazon always honour their online prices?

I noticed that the item now is at a higher price and says: "Only 6 left in stock - order soon.". Yet when I ordered it said that the item was temporarily out of stock.

    • You should have received an email confirmation. You'll pay the price as was listed at checkout. If for whatever reason it comes up different, I've found Amazon's support to be incredibly helpful.

    • did you get yours yet?

      • No I ended up cancelling my order for the EVGA 1080ti deal a few weeks ago. However, I haven't received that either :(. Amazon is still listed my order with no ETA.

        • So I emailed them yesterday, as it had been just over a month since I ordered, and they offered to price-match another Asus 1080 card down to the price I paid initially and provide free shipping. So now, I'm getting the OC edition card and free express shipping all for the original price of $509 US :)

  • Ty about the turbo, Ill grab one and put a kraken g10/watercooler on it.

  • -1

For anyone looking at these cards, know the opposition. Esp given the thin availability. The AMDs are excellent value, even with the 1080 at this price. Esp since they have far better multi-platform support and use less power. Both the 290 and RX series cards aren't half bad performance-wise. I use a Radeon HD 7690 3GB, it seems to perform as well or better than all my mates' 4 and 8GB Nvidia GTXs.

But be aware, some people have set fire to their rooms running high power cards, so make sure your power connections are solid.

  • The turbo is still out of stock…

    • You can still order it though and they will only charge you when they post it

      • Yeah I did… just need a card soon and wondering how long it's gonna take them to restock

        • did you get this yet?

        • @playswithfire: nope. I cancelled shortly after and got a card elsewhere. It's still out of stock so looks like I would've still been waiting.

        • @Stugots:

Seems I'm the only one who followed through with the order (and yes, I'm still waiting).

          sigh

        • @Stugots:

        • @playswithfire: bloody hell what a deal! That's good stuff man.

  • So, it's been nearly a week and still no shipping info… :(

    • Yea, slightly disappointing since this is the last component I need to start my new build :(

  • so I sent off a query to amazon about where it is. Gee they are a helpful bunch…

    Hello,

I understand your concern that the item you have ordered is not in stock and wish to know when the item will be in stock.
When an item is listed as "Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we'll deliver when available," this means the item is currently out of stock and we’re not sure when we’ll get more of this item. If you order one of these items, we'll do our best to get the item for you, and we'll send an e-mail as soon as we have more information.
You can cancel the order any time before it enters the shipping process, and you won't be charged.
I'd suggest checking our website from time to see if this item is available. If anyone is selling it, you'll see a "More Buying Choices" box on the product detail page. If it's not available from any sellers, you might see an "Alert me" link; "Alert me" allows you to sign up to be e-mailed when Amazon has stock available for purchase.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused to you.
    I hope this helps!

    That really helped me.
