Rent your neighbour’s car from $5 an hour, or $25 a day

Does my neighbour get a say in this at all?

Why would I get in a stranger's car, with no idea of the service history, road worthy or safety. No thanks.

      Hey Paintoad,

All of the cars on our platform have been put on by willing owners, they are comprehensively insured, covered by roadside assist and typically less than 10 years old.

You should take a look at this post which answers the common questions about peer-to-peer car sharing https://www.carnextdoor.com.au/blog/posts/how-to-explain-pee…

      Have a good day :)

with no idea of the service history, road worthy or safety.

The same could be said of Uber, Airbnb (smoke alarms working?) and a whole host of similar services.

Do you know the service history of that aeroplane you just boarded?

      • I can't speak for AirBnB, but Uber definately does to mechanical checks on cars.

I do say the same about them, and that's why I avoid them.

Do you know the service history of that aeroplane you just jumped on?

Airlines are multinational companies, with reputations and safety standards that must be adhered to, and are legally enforced. This is just some random guy throwing you his keys. Completely different things.

Thus if my neighbour isn't willing, I can't rent their car. False advertising.

And? None of that confirms safety of the car being hired.

It's always good to get into a bit of back and forth in the comments section.

You have valid concerns, and ones that we've thought about a lot!

Other than the annual RWC that all cars must have, we inspect the car when we install the GPS and lockbox technology that enables the car to be shared. We simply don't let cars in poor condition on the platform.

When owners list their car they agree that they will keep the car maintained (we even offer regular servicing options), cleaned and regularly check for damage.

If a car has mechanical issues, then the owner can face fees due to inconveniencing borrowers, this is to encourage owners to do the right thing.

Additionally we ask borrowers to report any damage, mechanical issues when they use the car and have a 2 way review system in place to monitor issues with cars. So we have a continuous feedback loop if a car has something wrong with it. Check out our FAQ's for more into about the cars and safety: https://carnextdoor.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb

But what if your neighbour was willing? Then you could! At the moment we have about 1000 neighbours who've all listed their cars.

Anyway, some things are just not for everyone but for those who don't have a car, it's a pretty good option and it keeps their money in the local community.

          Thanks, Keal

well then don't use the service if you have reservations ?

It's like bagging a deal at McDonalds because you're concerned about the nutritional quality of the food.

  • They do annual checks on the cars.

Also not sure if this is the place for it but with my referral code you receive $30 when you take a trip, or $150 if you share your car within 30 days.

Was a customer, but not anymore. Tips for renting CND cars: check and take many photos of the car before driving and returning it.

    • +2

Your excellent tip is also true for every other car rental. Especially overseas except those guys will doc your credit card when you are back home and hope you give up trying to get it back.

What happened in your experience ?

      • +1

The car I rented was scratched by angry some neighbors after I returned it to the original place. Luckily, I took several photos from all possible angles.
I've heard people complaining about those cars, so no suprise when I was informed it was actually done by some angry neighbors.

Good idea, hope it goes well.

I already own car but it is too small for moving furniture, therefore used this service twice and would recommend it. Parked my car where I picked the van/ute from and only used it for couple hours, so was much cheaper than normal rental place. Unfortunately I left my house keys in my car so had to drive back to my car before driving home with the furniture, but was easy enough to add time to booking if no-one had it booked already straight after (although paid little bit more due to extending the time).

edit: noticed the promo is to sign car up for service, which I have no experience of.

  • Just did a cursory search in Brisbane and a few good deals (especially if you need a ute or van)

  • Have used this service before. Couldn't be happier with what I paid for

it says during application you ll run "Dun & Bradstreet" credit check , will this create any credit enquiry to my credit file ?.

    • Hey there TorukMakto, we do an enquiry for a $1 debit card, predominantly to check for prior defaults etc. We aren't trying to assess your ability to pay, so the impact to your credit file will be minimal.

If you do apply, you can email our team at [email protected] once you've completed your application and ask us to reverse the enquiry.

      Thanks!

      • Can't apply WINTER1 for $30 credit. I PMed you, can you check your message? Thanks
