  • What's Newegg like with warranties? I hear they're a bit hit or miss.

Worth noting too that if you're not attached to MSI then there are some better local deals to be had (granted do not include shipping): http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=gtx1060+6gb&spo…

Did you check if any of those had stock? I bet 90-95%, especially of the cheap ones, will not.

      • Yes you are correct, stock is hard to find - apologies.

    Nice. How many mh/s

Can't tell if you're trolling or serious.

If only there was a way we could search for information.

      • I heard there's this web page called Yahoo.com that you can apparently use to search for things… but I've never seen it myself.

        • +1

Their sister company Google arn't doing well themselves so you probably have never heard of them till now, please spread the word to help Kickstart their company.

Man my graphics card keep dying like every 3ish years, it's always the graphics card or PSU, everything else lasts forever.

        • +1

@Zeral: Yeah, nah. I think I'll just stick with Bing.
Same with me. Mine died after 3 or so years. I'm sure they are built to fail…

        • @Zeral: Dust?

        • +1

          @FabMan:
Probably, have been using an old full armor Thermaltake case that had no dust filters etc

Just got myself one of those newer corsair cases yesterday which comes with those sliding filters and bunch of other perks, waiting for it to be shipped.

        • @Zeral: Good idea, my PC is from Jan 2010 upgraded with two 7950's. It has dust filters, a high quality PSU and plenty of air flow, which I think helps even when system is heavily overclocked like mine is.

        • @Zeral: Will dust kill graphics cards? Or mainly PSUs? I've just sanded a lot of plaster near by… maybe I should blow out my PC case…

        • @subywagon:
Ain't a specialist so dont know, best to find your answers online but id speculate yes to an extent.
Like it could affect Temps, damp up, sticky to board and fans, affect the amount of current/voltage, static etc.

        • +1

@subywagon: Heat is the enemy of PCs and dust on components greatly reduce a systems ability to remove heat.

good price, but i might hold the trigger until miners stop digging

    • I'm doing the same. Quite hard with all these new deals.

    • Yeah looking forward to november or so when all these cards the miners are buying up become useless to them. Price crash! (Hopefully)

      • Should be some good secondhand bargains!

      • Why November? I haven't been following digital currency news and I'm hanging for a price drop (sub $400) on a 1070… or am I dreaming?

        • dreaming - for a while at least until better hardware comes along and bumps the current products down in value.

        • They are planning on changing ethereum, which is the popular digital currency everyone is mining with GPUs, from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake.

When this happens, it won't be mined with GPUs at all.

        • Dreaming at the moment. Just sold my two 1070's I'd been running in SLI for $665 a piece so I could get a single 1080ti. Sold them for more than I paid new.

    • +3

don't bet on it. last time a currency crash brought it all to a half (2013) but this time it's far more resilient. you can see that nvidia and amd realise this as they've increased the RRP. fact is the cards now have more value than just as 3D renderers.

      • Its not to do with pricing, ETH will move from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake. It won't be mined with GPUs at all then. Unless some other currency comes along that is best mined with GPUs, we will return to normalcy.

        • The importance of Eth in the current crypto-boom is way overblown. It's a good part of it, certainly not all. There is a market for multiple crypto currencies - BTC, ETH will feature in all likelihood but so will many others. Monacoin in Japan is going nuts and requires a completely different (GPU driven) algorithm than Eth.

  • Forced to upgrade after my card died a few months back and got this one. Brilliant card. Far more powerful than I expected.

    • At least your card died at a good time.

      • My wallet disagrees!

  • Weren't these a touch over $300 during the eBay EOFY sale a few weeks back ?

    • +1

good luck finding that price again.

      • Took me 30 secs to search - getting down there in price but need to call up for availability

        http://www.skycomp.com.au/geforce-gtx1060-6-gb-gddr5-dvi-dx2…

        • It's not exactly the same card, that's a mini ITX.

        • @terrorjr: never claimed it was. I was responding to the above comment that related to an evga mini itx card that was on special during the eBay eofy sale.

Also if you take a look at the tests, these mini itx cards perform just as well as their larger siblings.

        • Err… let's see the stock levels before you claim any sort of price. There's plenty of old listings from pre-mining boom that retailers haven't taken down. I happen to know several people in the retail space and a distributor - they all confirm availability vanished, replaced by much higher prices.

WRT to buying this card for mining: DON'T DO IT in Australia

Ok, another one of my posts after lurking on Ozbargain for months.

    http://www.mycryptobuddy.com/EthereumMiningCalculator/path?h…

After 3-4 months you will plateau and not make ROI on your investment.

You will never get ROI in Australia mining in Australia because of our high power costs. (Exacerbated if you live in South Australia!)

I'm estimating using a GTX 1060 with 25 MH/sec (Inflated figure - may be as low as 19MH/s)

I estimate roughly 50W on a cheap CPU, HDD, some other low voltage peripherals. I estimate 120W at 100% load for GTX 1060 as rated.

Thus the figure is around 170W for mining 24/7. I use EnergyAustralia's Sydney prices at 30c/kWh and convert to USD for 23c/kWh.

At best you gain ~100 USD which is ~130 AUD on a card that is approximately A$300-400.

I am also assuming you can get that CPU, motherboard and other peripherals for free or have them lying around, otherwise your ROI will be very low. Older CPUs may not be as efficient, and generally stuff made around 5 years ago which you have lying around usually uses around 80-100W rather than sub 50W to 50W range.

Profitability has already fallen by half in the last month (Even those who bought at inflated prices e.g. $120 more than usual, have only gained this much by mining in the past month per card [was roughly $4 a day, and is now less than $2 a day]) and I expect the difficulty increase and profitability to drop faster than the predicted values. There are other issues with certain coins having ice age, proof of stake, extraneous trading vechicles, segwit and other issues which could affect the overall value and feasibility of certain blockchains into the future.

So, did those who pay more get ahead, not really. Those miners just arbitraged away their own gains and are now looking at serious losses without a future bull market.

I'm surprised a lot of the cards have sold out in Australia. I guess most of them were Fedexed out of the country from what I can tell from chatting with my local store.

    • Speak for yourself. My cards are still reliably on track for 4-month ROI. Profitability spiked to a high 3 weeks ago but has returned to the previous level of about 90-120% ROI per 3 months for a variety of cards purchased at last months prices.

Hesitated and now out of stock, looks like I will be waiting a couple of months once the mining boom calms down. It sucks, I just want one at a decent price for gaming!

It won't be long now, cryptocurrencies are in trouble again.

You'll most likely not want to use second hand parts in your build, if you do some research about what it does to the graphics card.

In general my cards have died within 2-3 years through general use. The ones used for mining have significantly lowered lifespan, most have been warrantied though.

Mining profitability has now dropped to around $25 for a 3 month period on a $500+ card. (Excludes cost of hardware)
