Going Overseas on Thursday and Forgot to Renew My Passport

Last time I had my passport renewed I was 17 years old. I'm now 22 and am meant to be going overseas on Thursday only to find out I completely forgot to renew my passport (completely my fault). At this point I've already accepted the fact I won't be going anywhere and that I'll just have to take this huge loss in flights and accommodation etc. as an expensive lesson.

Is there any thing I can do to get my passport in time for Thursday or am I SOL? Sadly, bikies are not an option.

Feel free to vote in the poll below:

On a scale of 1 - 10, how badly did I screw up?

Update @ 6:25am 10/07/2017

I called the APIS and the best they could do was 4pm. Lady said I should have the passport by 4pm Wednesday. Cutting it fine but it's worth a shot. She also put me down to be called in earlier if a time slot opens up. Very grateful I even got an appointment at this point.

Update @ 3:19pm 10/07/2017

Had a 3pm appointment instead and have been guaranteed 2 business days for pickup. So I should have my new passport by EOD Wednesday, less than 12 hours before I depart. Thank you to everyone for their advice and support. It means a lot to me.

Final Update @ 3:28pm 12/07/2017

I just picked up my passport from the Perth APO and am currently packing for my flight at 7am tomorrow! Once again, thank you to everyone who helped and I hope you enjoyed following this thread on my little adventure! I'll see you in a week OzBargain!

  • When I got mine done previously it took two business days or even 1.5 got it done in leedy I'm pretty sure. Safest option is direct though.

  • Isn't there a temporary travel document you can apply while you lose your passport traveling overseas? Maybe there is also a similar one for people could not find their passport one day before the flight in Australia.

  • I found out on the day my partner and i were meant to be flying out to SEA for a 2 week holiday. What an idiot….long story short, it took 2 days, had to skip 3 days of the holiday, skip a country (singapore) AND pay an extra ~$1000-1500 for the new flights. Ever since, it has made me not go through a travel agent again - not their fault with the passport but for whatever reason, i couldnt just book my own flight and jump onto the trip after 3 days which would have been only about $600 since once you miss the first flight, they effectively assume you have missed all of the trip. Nightmare. Lesson learned to check passport!

Think it's a airline rule rather than a something imposed by the travel agent, so the outcome would have been the same whether you book the trip yourself or though a travel agent

  • You now need to get your application ready along with all required documents.
    1. Fill in an online application and print out the form.
    2. Make sure you get the correct photo taken.
    3. Get photo signed by an applicable person.

A 4pm appointment means you have no time to get things sorted the same day. Arrive early as they might be able to see you earlier.

Triple check your application before going.

  • You can get passport same day. Passports Office will help. Not cheap but government will assist in emergencies.

3 weeks before my wedding in Cyrus. I returned home to find my passport in bits on the kitchen floor. It had been eaten by the dog.
I had to make a 120 mile round journey to the Peterborough Passport Office to get a new one. All worked out fine! Still married and we no longer have the dog!

  • As one of the other posters have mentioned, make sure you have your passport photos. They should be done professionally so there is no stuff up once you are at the passport office. Worst thing is you get there and find the photos are rejected.

    • They should be done professionally

I dunno, I've seen "official" places like AusPost do them and they are pretty amateur about it, photography-wise anyway. They'd just follow the same guidelines we can follow. Just need to be careful with a proper white wall, lighting and cropping.

      • Their computer tells them if the photo meets the requirements. It has around 6 - 8 checks.

  • where's the 'you're an idiot' option?

  • As stated, you should be fine.

I submitted my last passport application on a Friday morning, and had the email that night saying it was finished - and ready for collection next business day. Paid the priority processing fee of course.

  • There was a story in the paper a week or two ago about someone who realised their passport was expired on Sunday, their flight was leaving at 4:30pm Monday.

They got down to the passport office first thing, drove around town getting referees, got their application finished by noon, passport issued just after 3pm, made it to the airport 10 minutes before the check in closed.

  • had mine renewed in one day (went through washing machine),was flying following day…oh take flight tickets with you,APO gets a lot of bogus rush jobs but they are very helpful if its a real emergency, even a self inflicted one.

  • Glad to know APIS has good staff and process to assist in such cases even though it is an oversight on your part. Hope you get the new passport on Wednesday. All the best!

  • O.P should relax and let someone else pack their bags for their return flight :P

    • a few headphones out of colombia ought to be some present to their family and friends.

What headphone to wedding ratio do you reckon?

+1 for going directly to Passport Office - family member realized she was out of date and went straight to the office on 24th December (XMAS Eve) and had it done in 4 hours

OP is travelling and has a 'terrorist' team icon for a profile pic haha

OP has been updated. Once again, thank you to everyone for their help and support!

    • Yay!

  • Going Overseas on Thursday and Forgot to Renew My Passport

    No you are not.

  • Ahhh youth - glad you got it sorted! 😅

  • hey OP, just for future reference did you have to pay any fees? or did you just call the APIS and they were grateful toward you?

    • +1

Cost me close to $500 including passport photo.

      • +1

Can you please do a cost break up as well? For future reference.

        • +2

          https://www.passports.gov.au/Pages/Fees.aspx

          10 year validity passport $277 + Priority Service $183 = $460

        • @NancyCat:

Cool thanks, so real damage cost for this oversight is really close to $200 then as other costs are what you would have had to pay anyway. Cheers.

          @wildstone:

Not a bad price considering you get to skip the queue and that fact that overnight postage isn't cheap.

  • +5

Please update when you get your passport!

    • +2

      Will do!

  • Very lucky to get it done so quickly

  • +1

As a side note, when you booked your tickets you probably gave them a passport number. Make sure to call them to update it as soon as you get the new passport or you might get rejected at the airport.

    • Thank you, I don't recall giving a passport number but I'll give them a call anyway!

  • Also do not forget to update your ESTA or Visa on Arrival or Visa with the new passport number and details.

    • No visa for Malaysia since I'm only staying a week.

  • +2

OP has been edited with the final update!
