  • Fellow Ozb I am travelling to Europe on our honeymoon in August through to September, going through Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia. I was looking at getting a SIM for data only so we can book uber, get google maps directions and whatsapp/fb msg people at home. We certainly won't need 12GB for the month. I was thinking 5GB max.

Seeing as the data only plans are sold out for the above site, does anyone have any other recommendations or should I just pickup something over there that will hopefully cover those 4 counties? With the discount OP has provided it may still be worth it to pickup the extra data/calls/txt with this deal.

    • +1

Save your maps offline in Google Maps, helps a lot for directions and then a sim like this works OK to do what you list there.

    • hi knobbs,

      I just PM'd you

    • Well do some research. Because the EU has banned mobile roaming charges last month . So best bet is buy a PAYG sim when you get there.

Also most places have free wifi so you can just bum off that.

  • The hassle I found with the 3 sims was that it is 3G only outside of the UK. Works well enough for browsing but don't expect to do anything data heavy.

    • I am travelling to Portugal and Spain in January. Any suggestions for basic stuff such as instagram, twitter, etc but perhaps toggling to the laptop at night if no internet connection at the hotel?

      • +1

I would recommend the 'all in one' for your personal mobile but not to hotspot for your laptop - This SIM doesn't allow tethering to other devices unfortunately.

The data only three sim (out of stock on our website) would be suitable but it is increasingly difficult to purchase this sim from Australia as Three are not supplying them as much anymore. We are still waiting …

Ill be sure to message you before Jan if we can get some stock!

        Thanks

    • hi,

Some countries it will not support 4G speeds as it depends on the partnership Three has with the service providers in those countries (Three rents data from the carriers in each country). There is information online about the speeds Three have in their 'feel at home' destinations but nothing officially from Three itself (as far as I can find).

I can definately confirm that 4G works in these countries:

      UK
      Austria
      Denmark
      Ireland
      Italy
      Sweden

As for the rest they are all 3G available but not sure about 4G

3G should be suitable for any social media, photo uploads, snapchats etc.
Youtube and any HD videos would require 4G to play without buffering.

      I hope this helps guys!

      Thanks

      • Hi So Easy Travel,

For clarity on this, last month I was in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Slovenia and Czech Republic. All of these countries, even when using the 3 network local to that country, only used 3G.

I'll search for the three.co.uk site for the article, but there was no way to load or force a 4G connection as Three do not offer it outside the UK.

  • Was very disappointed with the 3 UK sim card. The level of reception within the UK made vodafone look amazing.

In France I could barely use data. Streaming music was beyond it's capability.

Better off buying a cheaper SIM option like from Vodafone to use in the UK - it would roam when my parents were in Paris but not sure why.

    • Hi Sydboy,

Vodafone and ThreeUK should have similar reception as they both use Hutchison towers (both companies are owned by Hutchison) but perhaps there are other factors too. Interesting to hear, I will definately have a further look into it.

It sucks your data speeds were not sufficient - I don't like travelling without music

Vodafone offer 5euro a day roaming so I assume they were using this service!

      Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • Works exactly as advertised when i went to Europe. Bad thing is i was barely getting 3G speeds outside of the UK.

    • Hi Spathy,

Im glad to hear it worked as advertised! In countries other than UK try fiddling with your mobiles 'network settings' as you can select which service to use (2G/3G/4G) - some phones don't do this automatically - just tip for next time :)

      Thanks

  • As mentioned above EU has banned roaming charges (for EU carriers).

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/may/20/mobile-phone-r…

The advantage of this offer is there's no iD checks & fluffying to activate.

But at least with a local sim, apparently your call & data costs are the same as when you're in your home country. Where as this is limited to UK.

  • I used one of these three sims through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Lichtenstein and had no worries streaming music almost everywhere I went. The 3 sim was great.. 3g most of the time, but it was great to have Google maps and book airbnbs ect when we needed it… Dunno why others had reception problems. Highly recommended. Couldn't get the just data sim, but better than having to buy a sim for every country you go to…

    • Good to hear you had a great experience with it - thanks for sharing

  • Flying in 2-3 months time. Do we get this now or closer to date?

    • +1

      Hey tzd116,

You'll be able to grab the SIM now, this particular SIM does not have a shelf life! :)

  • Hi, when does this sim/offer expire or does it & if it doesn't can I buy it now & not activate & use for 18months?

    • Hey cmcv,

This SIM does not have a shelf life! However if you're leaving in 18 months - I'd highly recommend to wait until then.

Data is always changing, so you will most likely be able to snatch a much better deal later down the track! :)

  • Sold. Leaving in a week and a half. Thanks guys.

    • Thanks for shopping with us MyWah!

      Enjoy your trip! :)

Just got back from Europe. Personally, haven't used Three. Once I arrived I just bought a Vodafone SIM and used that in different countries. Due to my plan (I was on prepaid "for foreigners"), the data allowance when roaming was lower than in the home country where the SIM was purchased (4GB down to 2.5GB in other EU countries). However, I was always able to top up. Vodafone 4G worked very well almost everywhere.

Also you should check that your phone's frequency bands are suitable for the countries you are travelling to:

    http://willmyphonework.net/

The same carrier may use different frequencies in different countries, for example.

I See USA Flag in the feel at home countries, does this mean If I buy this I will be to use this same SIM in both UK and USA? At least for Data to start with and I will be able to receive calls in both UK and USA (if not outgoing)?

Can someone please confirm, as I am going to both UK & USA in Nov/Dev 2017.

Can I buy now and use it in Nov-DeC 2017?

    • +1

      Hi Naru,

Spot on, you will be able to use in both the UK and USA. You will be able to receive calls + make calls to UK numbers.

Most definitely - the SIM does not have a shelf life.

  • Credit expires 1 month after not recharging <<== Is this after activation. Does this mean I can buy now, and activate 4 months later?

    • +1

Yep. Sim activates when placed in device and connected to service. Otherwise sim remains dormant, and doesn't expire (unless otherwise stated on packaging)

    • Correct, that is after the activation.

Once the SIM is placed inside of your phone and data roaming is turned on, this will then activate the SIM.

  • "Credit expires after 1 month of not recharging" does this include 12GB data? Or just the minutes and texts?

    • +1

      Hey Gezza90,

The credit expire includes the 12GB of data, calls and texts.

  • Looking for a European travel SIM like this for a trip in December this year, but with ability to hotspot via an MF91 w/ 4G&WiFi. OP, any chance you'll have a deal on something suitable?

    • Hey Imh86,

At this current time we don't have a SIM that will allow tethering!

Potentially we might have something in-stock within the next few months. If you sign up to our news letter we will be able to inform you once it's in-stock :)

  • Whats the rates for calling and receiving calls from Australia? Or the rate for calling a portugese number in portugal?

    • Hey worrierwan,

Receiving calls will depend on the callers phone plan - they will have to follow up on that one!

This particular SIM only has calls/texts to UK numbers ONLY, you can purchase extra credit to make calls to international numbers.

To call Portuguese/Australian numbers it will costs 3p/minute.

      For the rates: http://support.three.co.uk/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBISAPI.DLL?Command=New,Kb=Mobile,Ts=Mobile,T=Article,varset_cat=roaming,varset_subcat=4161,Case=obj(4160)

      • So there are no fees for receiving any international calls? Also do you purchase these extra credits on your website or is it on a PAYG basis to call international numbers? Thanks for any help

  • If I want more than 30 days, how would I recharge? Starting in UK for two weeks, but will be in Greece / Italy after that for another 6 weeks.

  • Hi OP, is this deal still on?

    • No. Just tried the code and it didn't work.
