Audio Technica AT2050 Condenser Microphone $148 (about Half Price) Delivered @ JB Hi-Fi

90

A quick check shows these around $300 or more. I was looking for a decent but low proced microphone for home studio recording for my work. I was looking at the older but very popular AT2020 for US$99 on Amazon, and thought I would do a random price check against JB Hifi, what I found was the newer AT2050 which Amazon has for US$229. JB has a scoop purchase of $148 free delivery. Lower noise than the AT2020, multiple patterns, plus some pass filtering.

This is NOT a USB powered mic, and it needs a phantom power supply, which luckily my little behringer mixer has (and a USB connection to the PC), so it's the perfect interface rather than trying to hook it directly as a microphone input on the PC.

Looks like not much stock left. I hope it suits some of you as well as it does me.

    • I have not noticed that one in the 'best budget microphones for podcasting' clips on youtube. The AT2020 was commonly mentioned as a great mic and the AT2050 here is suppoed to be even better.

I did a quick google search and could only find 1 guy who claimed he had both, however he said he got his AT2050 many years ago and thinks you might still be able to get them, which is a red flag to me as the AT2050 is a new model replacing the AT2020 so I would discount his opinion.

Most of my research was around the US$100 mark. Both have good reviews so I expect either would be good, however do some more research, or chose the one you like the look of the most.

      • Are you running a podcast, or about to?

Is it only me, I am getting
Sorry, Audio Technica AT2050 Condenser Microphone is no longer available and needs to be removed.

    • Link works OK for me.

  • Condenser mics are not great for podcasting, especially with more than one person. Dynamic mics would do the job better.

    • Are you sure on that? Either way, this one has multiple patterns so you can adjust it. I thought dynamic picks up everything - the hum of the pc, the fridge and the echo of a room that is not covered in accoustic tiles? Therefore a pattern reduces that extra noice by focusing.

Nope, other way around. Condensers are actually what do this.

        • It's not so much condenser/vs dynamic that dictates the suitability for a task, but more the pick-up pattern, max spl, roll off etc. A condenser with the right specs is fine for podcasting and are commonly used for this. Often it's the room acoustics and placement that cause issues that are incorrectly attributed to the mic being used.

        • A quick google shows:
With a cardioid pattern, a microphone naturally filters background noise, isolating the voice of the speaker for recording. … Condenser microphones are much more sensitive to sound. They pick up every little noise in the room. This is because condenser microphones often have an omni-directional polar pattern.

        • @ShipShapeRC:

That's not entirely accurate/clear. A hypercardiod condenser will have a tighter pick up pattern than a cardiod dynamic.

    Link not working here…

  • Would this guy be any good for Twitch streaming?

  • I have a spare audio mixer that I use as the PC connection:

Another option would be to get a USB direct microphone. There some great ones for podcasting like:

    or the smaller:

They just are not on a special right now.

Gone! Damn shame. A total bargain.

  • Wow that was quick! I'm pleased a few of you got one!

  • Title was misleading though. Not great for podcasting.

  • Super sad panda that I missed this. Was going to record vocals and acoustic guitar with it.

    • Shame it would have been great for that

  • Not working here either… it's gone from online store

    • That's why it was marked as expired. Sold out in less than hour.

      • wasn't refreshed…. Gone so fast…
