Kenwood DDX-9017DABS (AA and CarPlay) $820 @ Ryda-Online eBay

COLLECTING

If anyone is looking for a DAB upgrade to their car head unit with the addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, this is one of the most popular options out there.

A lot of shops would be able to perform installation and all the necessary converters (steering wheel controls, cameras and fascia kit) for an additional $200-$350. Or you can buy the kit and fascia package from Ryda.

For those that are interested in DIY installation and looking for a reference of the fascia kit + converters that are available, check the following shops which can usually install them for you if you BYO head unit:
http://carboncarsystems.com.au/
https://www.performancecaraudio.com.au/
https://www.ppacaraudio.com.au/

If you're just looking for Android Auto and CarPlay, you can just get Kenwood DMX-7017BTS for $523:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kenwood-DMX-7017BTS-Car-Multimedi…

The 7017 doesn't have DAB and also lost its mechanical drive (no CD/DVD) and it comes with resistive touch screens instead of the capacitive on the 9017.

EDIT: I forgot to add, if anyone is interested, 9017 comes with WIFI mirroring. On Android, it allows the touch screen to be controlled with the Kenwood Android app, but not on iOS. But at least with iOS you can use Google Maps instead of the default Apple Maps with CarPlay.

Just bought Sony XAV-AX100 using this eBay deal for $519 with CarPlay, thanks op.

  • Good price, now to hunt down the facia kit, brackets and harnesses for my car :(

    • Check each of the shops' I mentioned, then you can potentially get them from Ryda Online and save some $$$!

Fascia kit tends to be more expensive than the converters/harnesses.

  • Any idea how much would it cost to install around Sydney inner west area?

    • Carbon Car Systems is from Sydney, I think you can ask them to install (including converters, etc) if you BYO head unit…

  • Interesting. I need a new head unit for my wife's 2011 X Trail. Not sure if she can live without CD player though, and don't really want to spend over $500. But Car Play would be amazing!

    • I've got this unit. Carplay is okay. Siri is a gigantic pain if your passenger uses your phone and the lack of 3rd party GPS apps is a bit frustrating (I use waze because it gives speed limits and red light cameras).

Really good unit though. It does everything.

      • 9017 has WIFI mirroring for iOS. But the head unit doesn't response to touch on iOS.

        • Nah, AFAIK you need to load a custom firmware through a USB to mirror iOS. Android mirrors fine though.

    Don't forget CashRewards guys!

  • I have the DDX917WS which is functionally identical to this minus DAB+
The WS is for wide double DIN as seen in Toyota / Subaru.
    Happy to answer any questions.
Can only test Android stuff, no iPhone here.

  • When you mirror the phone, does that mean the phone (Android or iPhone) needs to be stay on all the time?

    Thanks.
