  • This or a Mi3 tablet? Anyone have any input - can't figure out what processor is in this unit either, it doesn't list it which makes me suspicious.

    • It's a SD 801 with 3GB RAM.
Probably stuck at Android 6 even though it'd be capable of running Android 7 thanks to Google wanting us to buy new phones.

      • -1

        nvm incorrect.

  • Looks like the Sony Z3 compact is a snapdragon 801?
    https://www.sonymobile.com/au/products/tablets/xperia-z3-tab…

    • Was SN 801 the one with battery/overheating issues?

      • +1

        No, you're thinking of SN810.

      • +4

The SD 801 doesn't have heating issues. But due to being a 32-bit processor, Google won't let Sony release Android 7 for it (even though Sony had a working beta early on).

And SD810 overheats in phones, but is okay in Tablets due to the larger surface / heat-sync (Z4 Tablet for example, which runs Android 7).

hardware still okish but the software update will be out of date if you mind that kind of thing

overall its an ok deal but its probably 2 gen old software and hardware i wouldnt hit it, under 200 ill think about

    • Evidence? I've got a Z2 phone and I still get updates from Sony.

      • Is it on Nougat? You're probably thinking security patches.

      • +2

The Z2 is still a great phone, hardware-wise.
Unfortunately, we got screwed by Google, and Sony aren't allowed to release Android 7 for the Snapdragon 800 series processors.
That said, I flashed my Z1 with Android 7 (Legion OS) for development purposes and it performs well.

  • Note that there is a delivery fee also.. My one to Melb was $9

    • +5

Found out if you sign up for new acc you get free delivery

  • +1

    Only if you need waterproof

  • Too bad its online only.
Would be great with the amex deal

    • The Amex Sony deal is a bit bs cause there is no Sony Store in Melb/Sdy

      • +1

        There's 1 in Chatswood, right?

        • +1

I think there is also one in nunawading, vic

        • +1

          Also one in Castle Hill

      • Wasn't there a sony store in Sydney on George St? In Chinatown area?

  • +1

    Great tablet for the kids

  • specs anyone? gsmarena may have a different version

    android version? gsmarena says kitkat…

    • +2

      SD801
      3GB RAM
Android 6 (never going to get Android 7)

  • Does it have built-in GPS?

  • Are these new with damaged boxes or refurb units?

    • +1

New with damaged boxes. Though the last few times I've bought things from Sony with "damaged boxes", the boxes have been fine.

  • These are great little tablets and despite the aging hardware have got great performance and battery life.
If you're comfortable flashing a new firmware google "XDA Z3 compact tablet nougat" and there's android 7 firmware (lineage OS) that works a treat.

    • Anything I should be aware of before I flash it with the firmware?

      • Not too many. I use Nova launcher (paid) which backs up my layout and google takes care of the rest. Some apps don't like rooted devices (foxtel for example), but otherwise have had no issues with things not working etc.

      • +1

        Yes, Dont flash blindly.
On the z3 phone, LinageOS gives you shit camera quality. You lose your drm let's (unique to your device), meaning no ps4 connections and no Sony post-processing on the camera.

        Need to research first

  • My software says up to date Android 5.02, but online says upgradeable to Android 6.0.
I also own Samsung 10" but weight difference means the Sony is my go to tablet, is very light and fits in coat pocket…

  • I bought it last week when it was $299 :-(

    • Was it a brand new unit you received?

      • Yep, sure was. Sealed box, not a mark on the unit. Heck, the box wasn't even dented or anything.

  • any suggestions for a cellular tablet? TIA

  • +1

got mine for $174 with amex deal. thx!

    • jealous, is the amex deal over? I couldn't see it on Amex connect.

      • Only bought it for PS4 remote play.

        Amex offer already expired

      • Not expired if you have save it. Mid year offer for multiple retailers. Must have used multiple cards
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319129

    • Can you please explain bit more?
      I also have amex.

      • Need to save the mid year offer to you amex but it has expired already, unless as grasstown mentioed.. you've already saved it to your card.

  • Shopping for my first Android tablet. What are the main concerns about not being able to upgrade to v7? I am considering this, the Samsung Note A 8.0, which seems lower spec'd than this for about the same price, or a grey import S2 8.0 for about $100 more. Thoughts on these two versus this deal much appreciated.

  • Wow with aptX!
