[Nintendo Switch] Splatoon 2 Digital ~ $62.35 @ Gamesrocket

70

Physical is slightly cheaper from Target eBay (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319982), but for a predominantly multiplayer online game I always prefer digital.

Roughly $62.35 if you choose USD ($49.35USD) or $64.45 if you choose AUD (probably still be stung by an international conversion fee if you don't use a 28 Degrees/Citibank/Bankwest type card.)

Some caveats:
- This is an EU key, meaning to redeem it you will have to create an EU (just choose UK or something) account, or if you don't have any eshop credit, then you can temporarily change to UK, redeem, and change back at http://accounts.nintendo.com.
- Nintendo Switch games are region free. Having said that, Splatoon is a weird one. It actually does have some region restriction, as it restricts you for Splatfests (special events). So, this key will restrict you to European splatfests. Normal multiplayer just tries to match you to the best ping, regardless of region.
- Due to the above, unlike other titles, when you redeem this, it WON'T show as purchased in your Australian eshop (each region has its own gameid). You CAN however redownload it by going to your profile (via eshop) and it will be on the list of titles to redownload.
- Gamesrocket requires you to validate yourself AFTER you pay (payment via Paypal). You might need to send a photo of yourself holding your photo ID and wait up to 24 hours (was 5 for me) to get the key.
- I'm not actually in Australia, so I didn't need to do this, but I hear you might need to access with a vpn (use a Chrome extension) for it to show the price I mentioned. Someone else can verify.

Despite all of that, it was worth the $17 saving over the AU eshop.

How is this cheaper than the ebay Target AUD $57.60?

C'mon, man. The very first sentence of the post says: "Physical is slightly cheaper from Target eBay (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319982), but for a predominantly multiplayer online game I always prefer digital."

  • not slightly, a lot cheaper, and Nintendo digital game is pain in the butt to deal with. Not sure if the switch has improved but for previous gen, account was locked with the device and had to contact them to switch, and everytime you play digital game it checked for authentication.

    • It is now locked to the account with Switch, not the device.

And yes, $57.50 for physical is a LOT cheaper than $79.95 on the eshop. But it is only slightly cheaper than the $62.35 that this post covers.

      • You say that, but you still need to have your device activated to play the game, and since you can only have one unit active at a time, ultimately if your Switch dies it's the same boat as it would be with a Wii U, in that you have to deal with Nintendo to get your shit back anyways.

i dont understand so this - AUD $62.35 is cheaper than the other ad $57.60??

    • Did you really need to post practically the same thing 14 and again 2 minutes apart?

The VERY-FIRST-SENTENCE mentions the other post!

Selling digital games at above physical prices is BS as far as I'm concerned. I don't expect a massive reduction, but when it's cheaper to buy physical copy and you get the benefit of resale/trade-in afterwards, I can't justify it personally (each to their own I guess). I buy all my PC games digitally, but I still buy the bulk of my console games physically.

Completely agree, which annoys me all the more, since with the Switch in particular I'd prefer all digital, the more games I can take with me the better.

This could easily be solved by Nintendo allowing retailers to sell codes for digital copies at retail, alongside physical copies.
