    isn't warehouse1 a scam ?

    • I purchased a laptop from the via ebay sale in June … drop shipped from Ingram Micro. Transaction was smooth as.

      • Just going by google reviews …https://www.google.com.au/search?q=warehouse+1+melb&ie=&oe=#lrd=0x6ad65d4cbe1df8a1:0xa3821fbad0503aab,1,&spf=1501457218090

        • Sure. I can only speak from personal experience. And I have no relation to them. And spending AUD2200 with them worked out perfectly. Just prior I had purchased another same laptop from another ozbargain post which seemed very reputable. It turned out the other mob supplied a used demo unit and then feigned ignorance. Yet W1 supplied a brand new HP Spectre X360 with a heap of unexpected accessories in the box all with factory seal drop shipped from an official Distie next day. So I am just stating my experience.

  • can i open VPN this router?

  • Does it do VoIP?

    • +1

I don't think so. It doesn't have a port for phone.

    • Just get a VoIP phone with its' own base. Try the Gigaset A510IP.

    AC1200 2x2 isn't fast in 2017

in fact the infamous DIR865 was AC1750 3x3… in 2013 when we all bought one.

  • Chipset Marvell 88F6820. Is that any good?

  • 3x routers posted up today and all at around a similar price point..

Which one would be best for a not too large 3 bedroom apartment? Don't need any particularly fancy features!

Current one doesn't reach the further bedroom even though the place is not that big!

    • d-links are notoriously awful in almost all aspects. depends if your devices do 5ghz or not, depends what your walls are made out of, depends on how many neighbours are using the same frequencies, etc etc

easiest way to test is to walk around your house could use something like this to test - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wi…

      • +1

i dont belive that at all

dlinks are neither better or worse than any other mass market manufacturer

i've been using a pair of the notorious DIR865s for years

the 5ghz covers a 2 story house on a std. 1,000sq.m block, the 5ghz covers the house well, the 2.4 does the block.

I exclusively use 5ghz on laptops, all on Intel wireless.

        I'm a network/wireless engineer.

The only thing that beats my old DIR865s is the Cisco 35/3600s I have.

DIR-865 uses a CPU that's the same class as RT-N16U, RT-AC66U. It only supports USB 2.0 (though honestly, the speed is closer to USB 1.0) and very small flash ROM size. It does have a 3x3 wifi setup. However, with that CPU, large number of simultaneous connections could cause issues unless the firmware is well optimised. You cannot help but feel that D-Link really cut the corner on that one. It did pick a tried and tested CPU, but it is weak in today's standard (it was created / designed for wireless N).

The CPU of WRT1200AC is much more powerful. However, honestly, this router is probably a good secondary router in today's standard. It has really good USB3/eSATA throughput for a router. Wifi performance for short distance is quite good, but longer distance, it is not competitive enough.

        • You're a network engineer and using that consumer grade pos?

        • Edit. Duplicate below.

        • Network engineer that uses a router that could only work with internet explorer when it was released haha…you must work for Optus pulling tin cans and string along

        • +1

Personally, out of all the routers & network cards I've ever owned over the years, only D-Link ones have caused me issues.

  • Could anyone let me know it the wifi coverage for this would be better (distance & reliability) than my current Netgear WND4500? Also can you confirm that this is suitable for FTTP. Thanks

    • +1

Spec wise this would be an improvement over your old Netgear, and yes it's Fiber compatible. You plug it into your NTD.

I don't know how good, or bad, your current router is so there's no way of telling you whether the range is better.

      • Thanks for the help scrimshaw.

  • VDSL2?

    • +1

No. This is a router, not a modem

  • Should I stay away from my ISP provided modem /router? I heard that alot of routers not compatible with some ISPs, I've got fttn. I mean I read a few forums some say they do a good job and others not so, and then others go out buy a $300 router and the thing is useless, damned if you do damned if you don't.

    • Modem will more than likely be fine, it's the router part that people aren't happy with e.g horrible wifi, limited options and bad QOS. Your best bet is to try the provided modem/router and see if it meets your needs, if not buy a router and bridge the supplied modem/router.

      • I'm bit of a noob but can I bridge it with my old adsl2 router or it needs to be another vdsl?

        • No for FTTN you'd need a VDSL capable modem.

    • +1

It depends from ISP to ISP - Telstra's Technicolor crapboxes have loads of vulnerabilities - look up 'weaponized autism technicolor' and look at the cached result for it as the guy has taken down the post - it shows that you can get the router to give you a root shell if you want it by simply throwing a bunch of stuff in a text box for pings.

  • So my TP-Link TL-WR1043ND has been great running gargoyle ( mainly because I can monitor and control traffic on my network) I don't want to spend a lot on a new router and figured a budget around the price of this one. Any other recommendations out there?

    • Whats wrong with your current setup?

      • I forgot to add it is a v1. But had been excellent for its life

It has started playing up as of late
The signal is a bit iffy sometimes. It doesn't have dual band which would benefit my new hardware.

I've actually had to re flash it manually in the last week. It's gotten better with the newest gargoyle software but I think after many years it's time to go on my backup pile

  • If anyone is using internode nbn can they recommend a decent modem /router for FTTN

    • You can have a look at TP-LINK Archer VR600 , specwise looks like a good deal for the price, supports all sort of NBN connections and UFB as well. not quite sure how good it is as I don't have any personal experience with it so far as I just bought it.

There's a very indepth review by a guy called Dandemon on Product Review. You'll have to scroll down to see it
        https://www.productreview.com.au/p/tp-link-archer-vr600.html

He is also a user on Whirlpool. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2564036&p…

The router is apparently not calibrated for use in Australia (it uses stock European firmware) which means its not complying with country specific frequencies and maybe TX transmit power levels.

In any case, I won't be recommended TP-Link's range of VR products now, because while they may be good devices they are slightly crippled since they don't perform up to spec in Ozland. Go for the ASUS DSL-6xx series instead,

        • On the box it's written Model: Archer VR600AU V2.0 , and there is another firmware available on the site apart from EU model. I think there was no other firmware available earlier. I might be wrong here
