DJI OSMO+ 4K Mobile Gimbal Camera $899 @ JB Hi-Fi

80

Found this offer on the JB Hi-Fi Website. It's currently priced below the standard DJI Osmo which is $979. Pricing error perhaps?

Nevertheless I successfully priced matched this at Ted's Cameras simply because they're closer to me.

  • Thanks. Nice work, congrats.

Just of out interest, what will you be using yours for?

    Cheers.

Curious as well, $899 is a lot of coin to drop on a stabilized camera!

We'll use this in the automotive industry for events and product reviews etc :)

  • An alternative would be a GoPro 5 with Karma grip. If you catch them both on sale, it'll be ~$750. You'll be able to upgrade the GoPro in the future and use it as an action camera too.

    Smooth Q is only $140

    • And if you add a gopro or something cheaper it's maximum $500

      • Not all stabilizers perform alike though. Does the Smooth Q stabilize well with a GoPro?

        • Yep. Does the job. There's plenty of youtube videos out there. What's bad stabilisation? To me it's either it does or it doesn't.

        • @mit: Micro jitters, panning that isn't smooth, non-ideal ramping speeds, horizon that's off, unoptimised balance (gopro on a gimbal designed for phones) which could lead to motor overheating, etc.

There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes with gimbals. Lots are based on SimpleBGC, you can have a look at the tuning guide here. If the manufacturer hasn't done a good job, or the gimbal design isn't optimized for the device you're mounting, the results can be non-ideal. It might be acceptable to some people but not to others, just like how some people are completely satisfied with a phone camera while others go for mirrorless cameras or DSLRs.

        • @eug: Ah fair enough. That's good to know.

For me and my gopro it does what I need. I bought it mainly for that reason so in comparison to a no-gimbal setup, it's great. I did balance it before I used it though. Horizons are rarely balanced and panning/ramping speeds are rarely a concern when you're moving quickly. I'm just happy that the footage doesn't give you a headache before you can watch it all.

        • @mit: Any gimbal would be a huge improvement over no gimbal, that's for sure. :)

  • I used one of these for my japan trip.
Setup is a pain but once your setup its good.
Battery life is good, buy a few more as spares, make sure you get the large MaH type.
Audio is poor, you do hear the gimbal noise in the background
Video at night is below average, setting adjusted and video is grainy even when i was in bright streets of japan.

I also bought mine from JB.

    Hope that helps someone.
Im tempted to swap mine soon or sell it and get a OSMO mobile instead.

    • Nice, I bought my last GoPro-specific one for my Japan trip too. They're great for trips - much more portable than a mirrorless-specific gimbal. Pity about the GoPro video quality though.

I just went on another short holiday and decided to try the Karma Grip. Being able to switch on the gimbal and start recording just by pressing 1 button makes it quite a bit easier to use compared to having to fiddle with two pieces of equipment.
