Optus - BYO Data SIM $70/Month - 140GB/Month - 12 Month Contract

970

Just came across this plan on Optus who are offering 140GB for $70 a month on a 12 month contract.

BYO device, free music streaming and you can pool the data with other Optus services on your account. Nearly good enough to replace your home internet plan.

If you are going to get Optus for data or replace home adsl , I would recommend vivid Unlimited for $89 per month with one month free via referral

If you watch Netflix or Foxtel go , 140gb is really not much

    • +7

Agreed, but I cannot get Vivid where I am so this is still quite good for those that can't get Vivid or want the full speed.

    • +5

Vivid seems to be having numerous contention issues at the moment. If you're lucky you may be able to get their full (limited) speeds of 10/1 most of the time, but many users are seeing way less than that at peak times. (I can get 10/1 during quiet times, but evenings are more like 2/1 with a high ping.

    • +1

Vivid has horrible coverage, Optus is far better

      • +1

Well …. that really depends if you're using the older Wimax modems (which are in the process of being replaced) or the new Vivid branded Optus 4G modems. Because the coverage for the new Vivid modems is identical to Optus.

        • @mattyman - The vivid website says "Vividwireless is available in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, ACT and Central Coast."

What's the deal? eg you sign up under an approved address in one of the cities above but can then use the modem on the Optus 4G network anywhere it's available?

        • +1

@f1ng3rs: it used optus 2300mhz so you need to make sure you are close to a tower.
Also in some places 2300mhz is reserved for NBN so those don't count.

        • @unco:

          Thanks unco that makes sense.

    • I think netflix doesn't count towards the data. But foxtel go isnt included in their free zone.

  • +3

    hellooooo 4G congestion.

    • -6

140GB is hardly enough to cause congestion.

eg, you download at 20megabytes/sec on your 4G connection (4G is capable of much faster speeds, depending on reception), you would exhaust 140GB in 2 hours.

There's plenty of capacity on the cell phone networks for this kind of traffic.

      • +12

        Rubbish.
Just because you can use all your data in a short period of time doesn't mean there won't be congestion.
I can download my 500 GB NBN plan in just 12 hours on 100/40. Yet the NBN network is still congested as hell with almost all ISP's.
The point is that now people will be using their max bandwidth FAR more often, contributing to potential congestion.
More data used, more likely to be congestion. Simple.

        • -4

I can download my 500 GB NBN plan in just 12 hours on 100/40. Yet the NBN network is still congested as hell with almost all ISP's.

Did you read what you typed, before posting?

If you can actually download 500GB in 12 hours on 100/40, then there's no congestion. I'm guessing you mean it's actually takes you 36 or 72 hours to download 500GB. There's a whole bunch of reasons why NBN is congested and 500GB is drastically different to the 140GB offered on this plan.

The point is that now people will be using their max bandwidth FAR more often, contributing to potential congestion.

The only point that's relevant is, there's enough capacity on a private telco network to have 140GB plans. The main reason they don't do it, is because they don't wan to undercut their home broadband offerings and expensive mobile phone plans. We're starting to see this change (as is the case with the plan posted here).

Not sure why you thought the NBN comparison was relevant.

        • @sp00ker:
Congestion only occurs during peak times in the evening…

How do you know this (enough capacity)? ISP's sell unlimited data on NBN yet there is NOT enough capacity.

Because its the exact same thing. They provide data to customers. It illustrates that just because they offer the plan, it does not mean there will be no congestion. In fact the more data they offer, the more likely it is there will be congestion.

        • @Viper8:

ISP's sell unlimited data on NBN yet there is NOT enough capacity.

What ISPs are selling on the NBN is drastically different to what a telco is selling on their own network.

How do you know this (enough capacity)?

It's just an educated guess … 140gb is chump change for the capacity that cell phone networks have. I'm not saying that they wont ever reach capacity or have congestion, just saying that 140gb isn't enough to cause it.

        • I'd speculate it's the people on unlimited plans causing the congestion, not the ones on 500GB plans like yourself.

Anyway, as for Optus… Put simply they overbought spectrum and rolled out 4G on basically every tower. They have more bandwidth than they can sell currently. I assume they'll stop with the deals as more people sign up, probably continuing only with the limited ~12mbps "mobile home broadband" style plans for big data.

      • To be Honest, to get 140GB consumed in 2 hours, you need to download at a speed at 20MB/s which is 200Mbps. The most commonly used Australian internet does not have that speed

        • +1

          20MB/s which is 200Mbps

          160Mbps

The most commonly used Australian internet does not have that speed

I can't comment on the rest of Australia, but I can get that speed on optus/vodafone/telstra throughout metro sydney.

      • Lol its Optus, just look at the congestion on their hfc network. Serious its so bad people dont even get 0.01 megabit and have packet drops.

They have no issues screwing over all their customers for short term gains.

  • I have to say this is a great deal.

I can only get wireless broadband and currently have 200GB for $80….bbbbut it is speed-limited, and especially when I am live-streaming my beautiful self it doesn't always cut the mustard, and the worst of times I tether from my Optus S7 phone.

I will seriously consider this. I wonder what modem would work best for this…

  • Or you can choose the Month-to-Month plan if you sign up before 6/8

    • +1

      Isn't that only 100GB then?

    • +1

Month to Month is only 100 Gig of data though

    • Do you know if double the data is only for the first month on month-to-month plans?

      • Throughout the life of the plan according to the CIS.

        • Thanks

  • how does sharing work with these sims?

maybe we can do a ozbargain share similar to those spotify plans for cheap data lol

    10 people = 7bux for 14gb!

    • +4

I believe it pools with other services on your account.

  • +6

This is a great deal…just be careful

I'm on the $70 month to month 100gb

The delay in showing how much data you have used is mostly 24+ hours delayed. However 2 days before my last billing cycle it simply refused to show data and this wasn't corrected until 4 days after. .The website just kept saying I had no registered accounts. I spoke with optus and they said this will around end of cycle!!

I finally got my alerts for 50%, 85%, 1gig over, 2 gig over more than a week after the end of the billing cycle. I've contested this as I had no way of checking data levels and hopefully will be refunded the 2 gigs I was charged extra for.

If you go for this don't expect to be able to use the full amount unless you are extremely careful and accurate in monitoring your data. I think the way they set this up is a scam, they should also have to option of buying the extra data if you go over rather than just letting it happen.

    • +16

Telcos usually behave like criminals and fraudsters so that's no surprise at all.

Lodge it with the TICO they do look at the stats. Ull just be 1 out of 10,000 but it add up on their kpis.

    • +2

I got a refund of $50 2 months back after Optus sent me an automatic email saying that customers in November/December had not received the 50/85/90 notifications and hence the extra fees were being credited… so this should be an easy win for a refund of additional excess usage fees for you hopefully

      • fantastic thanks for that

    • +1

Telstra seems to be within 15 minutes

      • exactly, so why can't optus do it

  • +1

Not only that but this includes upload as well as download does it not?

    • +2

all mobile providers counts upload AFAIK

      • +3

Yeah, were so close to getting fast and reliable 4G-LTE speeds (15-20Mbps), at usable amounts (100-500GB/month), at reasonable cost ($50-$80).

We can almost replace Naked ADSL2+.
        Almost.

I only recently have access to NBN, but the practical speeds are actually equivalent/slightly better than ADSL2+, yet they want to charge me $10-$20 more for it. Politicians really effed it up for the rest of us.

  • Shame this doesnt include Netflix streaming. Also a shame it's not paired with a voice plan.
Ah well, one can only dream.
    +1 OP.

    • +1

Dual SIM might allow you to use Data from this SIM and Voice from another SIM.

      • +1

Or you could get this and data pool with a cheaper Optus mobile plan.
Optus currently have the $30 sim only plan discounted to $25pm for 12 months with bonus 1GB data (total 3GB).

You'd then be paying $95pm total for 143GB data + unlimited talk and text on the mobile sim and you can keep the data sim at home.

        • My brain is trying to process what you've said.
So, you're saying that I could get this plan, and get a cheap Optus sim + data pooling which I can share with my partner… and him and I could get over 140GB of data on our phones? Even if the data sim isn't in use? Am I understanding this correctly?

        • @Docile: "My Plan Plus (including SIM Only) mobile plans, My Plan Flex leasing plans and My Mobile Broadband Plus plans." - http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phone-plans/data-sharing

I wouldn't think so since it doesn't say Data Sims

        • @JoJoker:
The '$30 My Plan Plus' CIS says you can data pool with 'My Mobile Broadband Plus'

The '$70 My Mobile Broadband Plus' CIS says you can data pool with 'My Plan Plus'

Looks to me they do data pool to each other so long as they match those names.

    • Also a shame it's not paired with a voice plan.

Yeah, a good deal, but unfortunately I need voice and SMS. Sucks.

    • People (including myself) have reported getting free Netflix streaming the last time this was posted (100GB). Once you sign up, they'll send you an email for data-free music streaming and data-free mobile TV streaming.

Hopefully someone that has signed up to the current plan can chime in if they have received the same emails.

      • Deal website shows music and Optus sport unmetered only. Proceed with caution.
        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/data…

        • Yup they showed the same thing last time too. It's strange that they didn't advertise data-free Netflix as that would have probably gotten them more customers.

      • Even if it is Free Netflix data, isn't it only through the App on the iPad so you can't watch it on Apple TV or the likes (Unless mirroring)?

        • Well, depends on what internet connection your ATV is connected to. Surely if you ran the ATV through the Optus 4G connection, it would fall under Free Netflix data.

        • @GaelicAU:
I'm pretty sure others have posted something about it recognising the app on a device and the bit rate is lower.

        • @dan76n: The details of the plans specifically state…

Stream SD video up to 1.5Mbps & music up to 512kbps

… so I would think by watching on a large device (ie. 55" TV), you will of course notice quality issues more easily.

  • -8

$840 bucks a year to use facebook and watch youtube. Smart money use right thurr!

  • can you go over the data limit? or do you get shaped speed?

    • No shaping, $10 for an extra 1GB.

  • That's a lot of data for a mobile device. Especially if you mostly use your home internet.

    Good deal though.

  • I have been using Optus 4G home broadband for a while. It almost always disconnects when I am browsing/using certain websites (e.g. outlook mailbox)…

    • This is different according to Optus.

      • Then I am using Optus sim only plan. Not home broadband…

        • +1

Yeah, I'm using the 100gb plan to VPN in to work and it disconnects quite regularly. I don't have the same problem with my other connection, so assume it's something to do with the Optus connection. It's fine for the most part though.

        • @Wally Simmonds: Totally agree. Same here. I am using this plan with TP-Link TL-MR6400. It disconnects immediately after I hit certain websites, one of which is a university mailbox I use every day. So annoying :(

  • Vaguely remember seeing a while back on one of their Data SIM Only Plans that the speeds were limited to 12/1 Mbps

That was for Home Wireless Broadband which uses the same network but is considered to be different. Unsure if they throttle speeds on this plan, but I doubt it.

  • Optus keep increasing their data. I like it. Just signed the mrs up to the $40 15gb july promo plan last night.

  • +1

I signed up for optus plan 100gb a months to replace my home internet. But i only get 2-5 mbps at night, internet very slow . Day time is up to 50mbps. If you are planning to replace your home internet. Make sure you test it first.

  • What speeds can I get with this? Is it stable/fast enough to replace my paltry home ADSL2 (8MB)? Any recommended modems?

    • +2

Here's my speed test I did around a month ago at around mid day. This was done on my phone with the SIM inside:
      http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/2988862232

Here's my speed test I just took (9PM). This was done on my laptop connected through a pocket WiFi modem:
      http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6503035980

Connection has been stable so far and the 20-30 ping works well enough for me to play Overwatch.

The modem I am using is a Vodafone Huawei R216. If it helps, I live in south western Sydney.

  • Not sure if it's just me, but I had to check whether this was 140GB a month or 140GB across the 12 month plan. (for the record, it's 140GB per month)

Perhaps a clearer title might've helped?

  • I need something like this but only for 3 months… just moved into a new house and the people who built it didn't engage Telstra to install the telephone services, which I've just been told is going to take another 12 weeks.

Any suggestions? I'm not in a Vivid coverage area and don't want a 12 month contract.

    • Maybe $70 for 100GB month-to-month option will be an ok stopgap solution?

    • Few comments already in the thread, there's a month-to-month $70 with 100gb you could do for 3m.

  • This is awesome for an in car head deck with android / apple play - thanks OP!!

    • How does the head deck connect?

  • Any idea if this sim would work with the Wireless Broadband router that Optus provide? We are on the 200GB plan and don't use near that.. would love to switch to this and still use the same device.

    • It should work. I have tried using a different sim in the Wireless Broadband router provided by Optus and I was getting normal 4G speeds which I was getting on my mobile. I was thinking of switching over too but am concerned as I am using 125 GB currently with the capped speed so I think I will bump over 140GB with uncapped speeds. I will wait till there is a 200GB uncapped plan.

  • add $10 for unmetered netflix

    • i was just on chat and apparently not. She said it couldn't be added

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a modem for using at home with this? It sounds great to me, my current internet is lucky to get 2Mbps down and 0.2Mbps up and drops out all the time (I'm on the fringe of Melbourne and the cabling is dying apparently), NBN is planned mid next year so this could get me through until then. I'm a big Premier League fan so getting Optus Sport would also be a big bonus.

  • +1

If you can bare using only 100gb per month, try this deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321825
You'll also get a 128gb iPad 9.7 4G, and included the Entertainment streaming for Yes TV by fetch, Netflix (need sub $)and ABC and Kids Iview. Optus sport - and music

  • is it possible to upgrade from the 40/m plan to this?

    • Don't see why not, use online chat :)

  • Great deal if you ask me.

Also out in the western subs of sydney I fins my connection and speeds to be great.

    • How WEST were you?

Last time (9 months ago) Optus is still very patchy in inner west.

Newtown…. continuously breaking off with area that got zero signal

Ashfield… Signal patchy and jumping in and out of 4G. Constantly breaking off in the inner west rail line.

Campsie…. A bit more stable but still jumping in and out of 4G all the time.

If you pool the data with two 40 dollar sim. Optus is very tempting and will have 170G to use all day where ever I am. I am just really not sure about the signal quality as I mentioned above. Putting a home data and two mobile line seems a big risk for me given my experience :(

      • Was in city and got average at best speed test scores.
Out penrith way optus rulea the roost in my area my telstra iphone has bugger all reception whereas my s5 with optus sim is king.

  • Guess I would have to buy a $10 Maximiser and test it out. Should have brought the half price $40 sim in woollies last night :(

Anyone know where I can get discounted Optus sim pack this week?

  • Just got this to supplement my awful home ADSL connection. Managed to dig up an old telstra WIFI 4g modem (mf91) and it had an unlock code in there. Score. If you have an old modem, dig it up and hopefully you have an unlock code in there as well!
