  • Please bare in mind that the Velocity Lounge passes are now linked to the membership, they are no longer hard copies so you cannot on sell them :(

Posting on the 1st of August and having this in the comments does not make it very easy for people haha

Isn't this just their normal offer for Velocity? I don't think anything has changed since I applied a couple of months back, so not sure why its a bargain, especially if the referral bonus goes.

I signed up for the just finished 100K Amex Velocity points, but at 50K bonus I'd go the Amex Explorer deal over this (which is still valid till October)

    • I missed out on getting mine - was meant to get wife signed up then refer me from that but ran out of time!

50k is still good - i'll get on that + the 30k referral.

Also bear in mind that you can't have been an Amex card holder in the previous 18 months.

I got 9 more months to wait till I can apply again but considering I don't earn 100k points per annum through normal expenditure, I'm better getting the card for a year, cancelling, and reapply after 18 months.

    • If your expenditure is low, wouldn't it be smarter to cancel the card straight after you get the 100k bonus so the 18 month timer starts sooner than later?

Or at least as soon as you use your free flights and lounge passes.

ANZ Travel Rewards (which have dropped AMEX, hence I moved to this card, but with 100k offer that expired yesterday) made you book at least 60 days in advance, plus it's only based on award availability. I managed to get the flight I wanted, thankfully, but school holiday periods are tough, and ANZ's phone support is woeful, I can't wait to drop them.

        • @Sir Casm:

Do they pro-rata refund you? I'm in the same situation, and looking to dump ANZ now. Not sure if I should wait till the year is up, or just can it now.

          @deeps:

Good question, but knowing what banks are usually like (c***s), I doubt it.

      • Amex shopper discounts mate ;-)

I've saved a bit from things like the shop small discounts, and $50-200 for things that I did need to get. I don't jump on every single deal but there's enough there to have saved at least $300… possibly over $400.

        • Yeah true, but I've already got a replacement amex. Would rather my money back

I don't like how they have removed / are removing the 3 velocity points per $1 spent at restaurants… That is where majority of my points came from :(

      No wonder you're chubby.

    • Stop eating so much chicken.

    • Yeah, the Explorer earns an effective 1.5p/$ into Velocity, but then there's also the transfer point promotions (like the current +15% one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321819 ). Unless you really value the lounge passes or get more than $400 value out of the free flight it's hard to recommend this card any more. Also the Explorer's still at a 100k signup bonus, which is 75k Velocity points.

OP has set a reminder for the previous, much better deal to expire to try and get some referral points.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307458

Downvoted as previous deal had 2X the points.

    • I don't see his personal referral in the post - it's a random generator, or am I missing something?

      • Personal referral only shows up after x votes I believe.

        • Personal referral only shows up after x votes I believe

That's correct, only once the minimum front page votes are received (which is currently 25 votes).

  • how do these referral links work ? If I have a platinum card, will the referral bonus work with other cards or does it only work with the card I have ?

(Removed). It was 100,000 yesterday lol. Dismissed.

    Mod: Removed childish wording.

  • Unlucky, i signed up for this 3 days ago and it was 100,000 bonus points

Even though it's my current card and I like referral bonuses, I'm gonna have to negvote this one. The Explorer's still got a 100k bonus until October (which can transfer to 75k Velocity), earns an effective 1.5 points per $ into Velocity but also into other point currencies, and it looks like Amex runs promotions to get you to spend your reward points (e.g., a current +15% on transfers into Velocity). So the only reason to get this card over the Explorer is if:

    1. You value the free flight more than a $400 travel credit,
    2. You really really want two Virgin lounge passes, and
    3. You like missing out on 25k Velocity points.
  • No one mentioned this so just so you know, these cards (despite their lengthy documentation on charging fees for cash advances) DO NOT have a cash advance facility for all enrolments post 2008
