Have You Ever Read a Book or Seen a Movie That Has Changed Your Life or Your Outlook on Life?

I'm in my late 20's, working a boring government job and just need a little bit of direction.
Yes - people say to travel and buy properties etc which is fine but is not for everyone and I have done my fair share of travelling
I'm looking for any books or movies you may have read/seen that has changed your outlook on life or has had a big impact on your life. If there is such thing..
Looking for self-improvement/ spiritual/ financial or basically anything that will open my eyes a bit more.. Recommendations please!

The movie Only Yesterday was pretty amazing, though youd have to be a single 27 year old female Japanese office worker living in 1982 Tokyo to really relate to it.

    Good watch overall though :^)

  • BOOK-There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem: DR Wayne W. Dyer (Helped me get through some hard times :)

  • You know, not really.

I've seen a lot of movies but as much as some of them have a temporary effect, which is to say; who knows how long that effect might be, I don't feel like any of them have ever changed my life permanently.

He grew up with an extremely wealthy family who paid his way to where he is now.

      • Doesn't stop him from providing a wealth of great information, Would you take financial advice from a poor person?

      • Oh really, where do you get that info from?

He has specifically stated on numerous occasions that he has NOT come from an overly wealthy family.

The path that he has taken from college to where he is now is pretty widely known and none of these steps point to family money.

I am currently reading "The Art Of War" by Sun Tzu.It is almost a must read for anyone who wants to succeed at anything (not just wars.Napoleon is said to have read it,and whilst it didn't exactly help at Waterloo,it did help him…if it is true he did in fact read it,to become an incredible military leader),but you do have to get your head around becoming something that is not exactly instinctive to most.
It is basically the idea that "knowing your enemy" is paramount, extorting their weaknesses for your ultimate gain is not negotiable (and that appearing to be strong when you yourself are at risk of showing weakness is even more important than the previous point),and that one can win/succeed at anything if you apply these and the other points noted throughout the book…..as i said, not exactly easy to do.
A movie that has never left my mind is one i saw in Mauthausen,Austria (a Nazi concentration camp initially used as a work camp…but quickly becoming an extermination camp).I saw it only once,it was only 30 minutes long and didn't really have a title (it was actual video footage from the camp),but i will take those images with me to the grave (it truly made me ashamed to be human, and cemented the idea for me that animals are the true dominant species). American History X also left an indelible mark on me,and made me debate whether or not whites actually earned some of the violence blacks returned to us.I think that books and movies like these (ones that challenge a belief or ideology) are truly the types that will,in one way or another, change you forever (even on a subconscious level).

    • Art of War is definitely a must read.

    • As a female manager in the male dominated tech industry, "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu has been invaluable. I highly recommend it.

For me, art works influence me tremendously, but it's more of a very slight growth learnt from the new media consumed rather than a big epiphany right after reading/viewing/hearing the work. But by surrounding yourself around several very inspiring pieces and going back to them here and there is the best thing you can do…
Also, relistening to music is much easier than a movie or book or short film. Music has probably inspired me more than any movie or book has. However, music doesnt go anywhere near as in depth as books and movies

And digest as much Bill Hicks as possible.

Should be mandatory for all humans.

    • Have you got a copy of "Love All The People"?
Well worth a read… It's one of my goto books if I'm looking for something to read as I head out of the house.

      • Yep. Plus American Scream. If you're a pommie of a certain age (as I am) Bill Hicks was huge. I'd never heard anyone speak like him.

        • Oh, wow… I hadn't heard of American Scream… I'll get my book store to get it it. I was only introduced to him five years ago, but love his work. I cringe to think of what his take on the situation over there is today would be.

More recent books of a similar theme: - Yuval Harari : Sapiens (already mentioned on thread) and his latest: Homo Deus.

    Movie: Contact.
Jodie on front porch talking to Matthew McConaughey about God. Prior to this movie I always though religious people were crazy, ie there is no proof that god exists. But when Matthew asked Jodie if she love's her dead father and she said "yes", he then asked her to prove it and she couldn't it make me change my outlook on religion and religious people.

    • while i enjoyed the movie, it was a pale imitation of the book….or perhaps the book had already had its profound impact so the movie couldnt inspire as much….?

  • I read where did I come from at 10. It scarred me for life!

  • Movie - 3 Idiots. A very meaningfull movie about education

World view changing and correcting for anyone.

It's called The End of All Evil by Jeremey Locke. There were only a limited printed copies and is now selling for $1,249 to $10,099 on Amazon.

This is probably one of the greatest books ever been penned by human hands and I read a whole lot of books in my life and for me to say that it’s a high compliment.

Life can be full of surprises and its unpredictable when you are living in a society with some people who are scum and villainy. Your life is not fated as it seems but with hope and knowledge are the best things you learn in life.

Quote from the character Andy Dufresne:
[in letter to Red] Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

This movie has changed the way I look at life and it still does until today.

    Self Improvement
A great book called anti-patterns, shows how to deal with different personality profiles, anything on human behaviour is good

    Last one
read a book on AI theory. The first book I read was on Neural Networks, writing my first neural net solution made me realise that a machine can solve problems that cannot be programmed or solved easily by human thinking. (called non deterministic decision making) May give you a hint to where things are going with humanity and AI.
