I strongly recommend skyscanner in preference to IWTF.

Have been looking at a trip lately using Skyscanner and this is a good deal.

Flying Cathay Pacific on all legs - Cathay is a full service airline, includes 30kg of luggage and free drinks/meals.
You can earn Qantas frequent flyer points on all Cathay Flights if you don't want to become a Cathay Frequent Flyer.

This is much cheaper than similar flights with luggage but no meals on Cebu Pacific flying Sydney - Manila - HK - Manila - Sydney.
(Cebu Pacific don't fly Sydney to HK direct so can't imitate these flights).

Much cheaper than comparable flights on Qantas on the same dates…

Flight centre quoted me $1474 for exactly the same flights!

$726 for this:

Depart Sydney 4 September for Hong Kong
Depart Hong Kong 18 September for Manila
Depart Manila for Hong Kong 16 November
Depart Hong Kong for Sydney 21 November

Long trip. 59 days in PI, which means you'll need to apply for a 29 day visa extension after you have arrived in Manila which will set you back around 3200 pesos (~$90 AUD).

You can play with the dates and obviously get different results.

Mod: Removed accusatory statements. Use report.

59 days is a long time to be under the rule of Duterte!

    • +2

I prefer Duterte to any Australian politician….

    • +1

Not so long if you're a druggo

      • Vigilante justice doesn't require any evidence.
Your stay will be very unpleasant if you look like a druggo (or if you annoyed a local)

        • +1

I have visited the phils several times, so much great natural beauty and island hoping to explore and overwhelmingly lovely people we have a lot in common with but of course with a lot of corruption and third world elements it's also deeply flawed…. so understand why the people voted him in.

  • Why is Skyscanner better than iwtf?

    • +3

IWTF is spammed relentlessly here. I suspect there are reasons for that, but the mod deleted my comments about it.
      Overmoderation on OzBargain is real.

I find Skyscanner is easier to use and often cheaper than IWTF for the same flights.

      • We didn't delete your comments, just removed your rant and accusations on users. Deals should be about the deal. Use the report link or Talk with a Mod and we will investigate.

        • Actually Neil you did delete my comments in my deal about IWTF. Anyway to your credit you haven't deleted the comments above.

Refreshing to have a mod actually reveal their identity, rather than simply overmoderate anonymously.

I would encourage people to try Skyscanner, I find it far better than IWTF in almost every way.

often cheaper than IWTF for the same flights

mate if you think that's the case then why don't you post it when there is a IWTF deal next time.

But I see where you are coming from. I think you possibly are making a good point. There is not enough comparision between IWTF and other flight finding sites. I think IWTF to a certain extent does get a lot of publicity through the deals. Even though as you have posted here there may be plenty of other good deals via other sites. It is a bit suspicious that only IWTF deals appear when I would realistically expect other deals to have good deals for certain routes.

        • +1

Yes suspicious, that is one way to describe it.

I often do 4 or 6 leg flights to multiple countries. For trips like that I find Skyscanner so much better than IWTF and most others…

I used to use expedia brazil but that loophole seems to have been closed…

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: I don't have time to compare the sites head to head now. But will look at it when I next book flights and report back. Perhaps this discussion should be continued in forums. (You have got me curious as to the answer to "What flight search website is the best?")

        • @Gimli:

I would do a direct comparison on IWTF with this deal, except IWTF doesnt easily allow 4 leg trips like this to be looked up (if someone who loves IWTF can show me how to do it, I'd be happy to).

I would note the price of this deal dropped $6 in the last few days - I assume that is exchange rate related.

    • Skyscanner allows you to easily do multi-leg trip searches.

IWTF seems setup for 1 way and return trips only. It has a stopover option but that doesnt even seem to work for me.

IWTF constantly spammed here. Check identical dates on Skyscanner and you may well be pleasantly surprised…

      • The stopover function on IWTF previously didn't work for me, now it does.

On this deal the pricing is identical on both IWTF and Skyscanner.

  • Don't think you can earn Qantas FF points with Cathay.

    • +1
      • +1

Only in certaun fare classes though

        • That is true, even for Qantas itself.

You earn QFF points on ALL Cathay Pacific flights except DISCOUNT ECONOMY and except on Cathay Pacific Airways codeshare flights operated by an airline other than Qantas or a oneworld alliance airline.

          https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/airline-earning#cx

These airfares in this deal are ECONOMY FARES on flights operated by Cathay Pacific themselves.

          Therefore you earn QFF points….

        • +1

          @GreatWhiteHunter:
Thanks for that. Any hints on identifying which fares fall under which fare clasd? Thanks!

        • @hardya:

Click through to the booking stage

Before you pay you should be able to see the airfare class and conditions.

  • Took a similar flight, albeit from/to Melbourne. Paid $760~ IIRC

The plane from Melb to HK was an A330. Plane departed an hour late (they cited traffic congestion). Pilot assured us that the plane will make up for the lost time. Hardly. By the time we reached HK, a few of us with connecting flights to Manila were in a rush. Only to be told that the HK - MNL flight was cancelled due to bad weather. Hmm…. Thankfully, we were booked in a Dragon Air flight that's leaving in a little over an hour's time. No biggie. The plane was surprisingly much better — the new Airbus A350.

On my return back, I found that Duty Free HK doesn't sell Liquors to Australia bound passengers. That's Bye — or should I say, Sayonara — to the Yamasaki Single Malt thtat caught my eye. I feel asleep before lunch time, and woke up probably an hour or so after they served lunch. Nothing on my tray (unlike Qatar Airways on a trip to Europe). Thankfully, was still quite full from the delish late breakfast I had in HKIA so decided not to bother the busy stewardess.

Would I fly again? At these prices, absolutely. Perhaps with a longer lay over in HK. I just hope though that Cathay starts replacing their A330 with the newer and bigger A350 for the HK & AUS leg.

    • Looks like the A330 is used out of Sydney sometimes, sometimes the Boeing 777-300

I far prefer Singapore Airlines to any other airline as far as quality of service (and appearance of hostesses) is concerned.

However their prices just aren't competitive for this route…

The liquor ban is an Australian government anti-terrorism rule. Also applies to flights to Australia out of Manila….

      • Oh yes. The HK to Melby flight was on a Boeing 777-300 plane.

About the liquor ban.. I'm a bit confused. A friend who just recently flew in from Singapore was told by a Changi Airport staff, that they have to buy the liquor 2 hours — or was it 3 — before their flight (they checked in under 2 hours). Not sure what the arrangement is — if any — in this case.

  • The one thing I've noticed from using sky scanner for a few years is that it gives flight prices that aren't available anymore as available and you only find this out when you actually click into the link to see the fare (this has happened on multiple occasions and even occurred if i deleted cookies etc and tried a new computer). I haven't done the multi stops thing so I won't comment on that but I definitely prefer cheap flights website, from all the times I've booked it not once has let me down in terms of the prices changing (in other words the price that is shown on cheap flights is the price you'll actually pay when you are re-directed to the website to book).

I still use sky scanner, but have found using it less and less.

    Just my two cents.

I guess a canny flyer would check a number of sites before booking - including IWTF and Skyscanner.

BTW - I check OzB pretty frequently, and can't say I have noticed IWTF "spamming". 😯

    • +2

Agreed! As a frequent flyer I check many different sites before making a booking. IWTF has deals here on a regular basis but most times they are just giving notice to general or special sales that are available via any site….not just theirs. Skyscanner could post deals here too if they could be bothered…

I found many different dates for this current CX sale…again more a general sale and not limited to MNL via HK or to Skyscanner :)
