  • Bought one yesterday. Saw a discussion in whirlpool forum. Seems to be a preety good deal.

  • +3

    wow, cheaper than grey imports…

maybe that can sell at 5D MII for half prices… :O

  • -4

it's the cheapest most basic Canon SLR there is

most of the equipment fans on the various forums won't touch it

    • -3

      It is an old model.

Compared to the newest model which is a 550D it might lack some features (Though i cannot think of anything major) but aside from that it is a good camera.

      • +8

The 550D is not a newer model of the 1000D… The 1000D is a different series for Canon, and is it's most basic DSLR, and is still current…

        • +2

Not sure why you've been negged, but what you've said is correct. 1000D is a different line to the 550D; the 1000D doesn't have a successor just yet.

        • Yeah, exactly. The 1000D is Cannons entry level dslr which came out in 2008. The 550D is Canons mid range dslr which came out the beginning of this year.

          • +3

@heatseeker424: Canon lines from basic to advanced:

            1000D (new budget line)
            300D… 550D
            10D… 60D
7D (new line 2009, with video)
            5D Mark I… II (full-sized sensor)
            1D Mark I… IV (full-sized sensor)

            • -1

              @You and Me:

Canon lines from basic to advanced:

If you are looking at video only the 7D is better than the 5DII

The 550D is also really the 7D.
I cant remember the specifics now but i think the 7D and 550D are the same camera on the inside (The 7D will have more processing power to allow faster saving and so on).
The 550D also has a much better screen than the 7D.

Aside from that the 7D shouldn't have been called a 7D, it doesn't fit with the previous model numbering.

              • -1

@anthony: 7D probably is more versatile, it really has different design objectives to the 5D Mark II. It is a new line that responds to the development of the market into guerilla filmmaking.

The sensors for the 5D and 1D lines carry unique advantages by being the size of a full-frame film SLR, and bring the experience closer to a classic Canon.

However, the computing power required is greater for these lines, so there can be performance losses (such as rapid shooting.)

Lens profiles differ too — check out wikipedia:
                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full-frame_digital_SLR

            • -1

@You and Me: 60D should have the same video as 7D…

              • @jv: I never said anything about the 60D

            • @You and Me: 60D is actually the successor to the 550D afaik

              • @blaze: The 60D is not a newer 550D
60D and 550D are different product lines

                Canon has 4 model lines

Entry Level: 4 numbers eg 1000D (And this is the only model in this range)
                Consumer: 3 numbers eg 550D
                Consumer/Professional: 2 numbers eg 60D
                Professional: 1 number eg 1D

The 7D does not follow that numbering system

        • +1

so its a different series… you can still compare them. anthony's point is still perfectly valid.

500D with far better features than the 1000d, body only, is just 670$ with au warranty. if i had to recommend an entry dslr i'd recommend the 500d over the 1000d despite the price differences.

          • @kimmik: depends on your budget…

        • I did not say a 550D is a new model replacing the 1000D.

I said that the 1000D is an old model camera and that compared to the newest model consumer camera which is the 550D it lacks some features but it is still a good camera.

    • -1

thats because your talking about an entry level camera… most people who are serious will go with serious cameras!

    • -2

LoL. It is because the most basic SLR, hence its cheap,

  • for a entry level camera seems ok,next best price I see is $588.58 found here
    http://www.roadmogul.com.au/canon-eos-1000d-101mp-cmos-digc-…

    • I rekon they are just clearing the stocks and will introduce a new model soon.

  • for entry level camera better buy Pentax KX, not much more $, but much better camera.
    anyway good price for 1000D

    • Go with canon if you want to be able to buy second hand lenses.
Canon cameras are more popular so there is more second hand stuff for them

      • -1

On the other hand buy a Sony DSLR (heap of new models being released) and purchase Minolta lenses on ebay. Classic lenses by todays standard and more often still a bargain.

    • +8

Pentax, Sony, Canon, Nikon, whatever its brand, it does not matter for entry-level SLR. It all depends on the USER itself.

      • Agreed. While I'm not a fan of Canon, this is a damn good price for an entry level DSLR for any beginner.

  • This is an ok price. not stunning.

The coming generation of cameras will be a significant leap, and given the persisting aud, will also be stunningly cheap.

    • +1

When they mark the camera price, Aussie dollars is always about half price of USD :D

  • What is the video quality? Does it even shoot video?

    • no video on this camera

      • It's an SLR… you buy an SLR for photos, not video.

        • +2

Not true. Some people want to shoot video with an SLR as gives you much more freedom for the price compared to consumer digicams. Several TV shows (eg House) have shot full episodes in the past with DSLR's, and the results look quite impressive.

          • @hellbound: lol 45seconds behind you but we spoke the same words…

        • +2

not true. keep up with the times man, slr video has qualities you could never achieve with non-slr low budget equipment.

for canon, digic V coming next year will also bring a big improvement to video quality.

          • @kimmik: In a nut shell it's because the sensor on these things are "full sized" as with the video cameras you buy off the shelf would most likely have smaller sensors than the ones found in full sized dslr's hence the image quality on a dslr would be better than a video camera. Also the lens can come into play a little as well.

            • @Trance N Dance: yep.

the biggest problem with dslr video at the moment is probably poor pixel binning, leading to fine detail errors.

apparently digic 5 will bring much improved binning.

then there's the rolling shutter which needs to be addressed.

        • You wouldn't buy this particular DSLR for shooting video because it doesn't support it, but there are many HD-DSLRs out there with impressive video capabilities, particularly when compared to consumer digicams. In fact, a huge number of professionals use HD-DSLRs to shoot video nowadays, and yes, even an episode of House was shot on one: http://www.encoremagazine.com.au/cinematography-dslr-size-do…

        • +1

As has been said mainstream TV has been filmed on a DSLR.

These videos might not be as impressive as filming a TV show with a DSLR but they are great music videos.
Both are shot with a Canon 5D

  • super cheap, i paid $575 in thailand for mine 6 months ago

    • +5

Did you get the infamous Thai happy ending after you bought it?

      • +1

definitely got the infamous in thailand, but it doesnt refer to the buying of the camera.

  • +3

It is a good bargain but the camera is not video capable, which definitely is a big minus for me.

    • same here. i am thinking of getting the D3100

      • If you can borrow a friends DSLR with video capability and have a play around with it do that before buying a DSLR for its video functionality.

There is a lot more work you need to do with video on a DSLR compared to a normal video camera.
They do not have the ability to focus as you move the camera, you need to manually focus as you move the camera and autofocus during filming is not worth using.

  • There are certain hacks to enable video capture with the 1000d. Although you need a laptop attached to the camera to do it but the results are great, especially with a fast lens.

    • and you have to connect a laptop via usb port to the camera :(

  • I'ld rather pay a bit more for the Nikon d3000 which is around $598 (before haggling) @ JB

    • I have used both and the 1000d is easier to pick up and shoot, with good amazing results, the d3000 felt like a toy. the 1000D was my first Dig i used after years of shooting film, some of my fav shots were taken with it. I am now shooting a 5D MKII. But it is what feels best for you. I am looking forward to the 5D MKIII next year.

Didnt Clive Peeters go into receivership?

    • got bought out by harvey norman

      • Oh no wonder they are back :) Good to know thx..

and I will give this deal a past… go for the 500D instead guys for better value! :)

    • -4

Clive Peters are now owned by JB Hifi.

      • +1

uh when did that happen? I thought it was hardly normal that bought out Clive Peters

  • This is even cheaper than buying on eBay at the moment, even with the Aussie Dollar so high.

Good value. The lens itself can be sold for about $90-100.

    • The IS 18-55 is pretty good and what you can sell it for will not cover the cost of buying a comparable replacement.

I would recommend keeping it until you find that your photos are being let down by the ability of the lends.

  • What is the IQ difference between 1000D and 500D with the same lens? Is it negligible or noticeable?

    • the 500D has the next generation of image processor, but i think unless you're making prints of your photos, the IQ is negligible

    • I'd like to know this also.

  • This is a great price for this Camera… I Paid $750 for a Nikon D3000 about 6 months ago and i was tossing up between the D3000 and this… At the price this is at you really can go past it if your looking for an entry level DSLR.

  • Little while ago I went to Dicksmith North Sydney and TED Pitt Street to get a price match. They said they can't match it! So I got it through Clive Peters. Happy!

    • hi mate, which CP store did you go to?

      • Ordered it online with the delivery fee of $10. I don't think there is a CP store in Sydney anymore.

        • Thanks..I thought so when I tried to ring few but their phones were not reachable..cheers

  • Anyone in Sydney got the price matched? which store?

    • just bring it to officeworks, they will beat it by 5%

  • Try your luck but i Doubt people would price match it.

  • +1

I just found a use for these cheap dslrs =P

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/10/watch-52-canon-dslrs-bring…

  • OW & DSE just seems to have the twin lens kit; at least that's my experience at Hornsby.

    • Yes and they wont give it with just one lens.

  • i went to the website and its @ $999? was this only for 7th and 8th?

    • it showed as $493 yesterday (Saturday) morning as well. Looks like they have updated the price. But on homepage it says '$493 In Store Only'

    • Damm.. missed out… anyone know if there is anywhere else that has it for a similar price?

      • They have them instore for $493. I rang them up (Macgregor store in Brisbane) and asked when the offer finishes instore and they said 17th Oct 2010 and they have an order coming in tomorrow with 22 cameras. 5 people (including myself) have put a deposit on one and they're going to ring me tomorrow when the stock comes in. Hope that helps and good luck finding one!

  • Mine arrived today! yay!

    • How do you like it? Whats the IQ? Will you please rate it out of 5? I kept thinking before buying it and its gone now.

      • -1

5's a wired number to rate it out of, i prefer to rate things on a scale of 1 - 7.825

yep, slow day in the office.

      • I have not used a 1000D but there is no reason it will perform poorly.

If you want a cheap DSLR then you will not be disappointed.

        • Dunno this is my first DSLR.

          Alot to learn.

First impressions. Is light than I expected, smaller than I imagined.

          Seems good so far.

i regret not buying it when i had the chance… now that they're gone i want one..

  • Got mine just now!. Fast shipping.

    • -1

Nice one mate but I am glad I didn't buy this. I got a near new (USED 3 months) 550D for $500 (including 18-55mm IS lens).

      • well, this is my first DSLR and it came with a IS lens. So I'm happy :-)

  • I rang Clive Peters Store in Braybrook at 11am this morning and they had 1 left and seemed would do at the $493 price. Other stores such as Malvern and Dandenong had none but Richmond supposedly had heaps. They will transfer it to your local store if you ask for free.

I'm 99% sure will buy one tomorrow so will let you know how it goes.

if you go to http://www.clivepeeters.com.au/ it is on their homepage and says "available in store only"

    • Hey slappy. Were you able to pick one up??

      • Still deciding between this and the Nikon d3000….

  • I received mine a few days ago. Love it!

  • Just ordered one in at the Richmond store. They said they will sell it at the same price of $493.
Won't be in stock till next month, though.
