Is Australia Post Still the Cheapest Way to Send Small Items Within Australia?

Hi,

I have made a research and found that the cheapest option to send small items within Australia was Auspost with your own box ($7.60 for 500 grams and less). Is there any cheaper way?

Thanks

  • most post service websites have a fee calculator. I recommend using that for the post services near u.

I know all of the Auspost fees. The question is whether there is a cheaper option than that elsewhere…

then go on asking about auspost cheapest shipping

Austpost isn't the only postage company. I'm pretty sure op is asking about other companies. Also pretty obvious small item is parcel size ie. Can't be sent as a small letter

        • +1

We find auspost shipping rates to be of good value. Our smallest item can be shipped for $1. <250g for $1.40 and <500g <$3 to <$6.

        • @whooah1979:

Yes I agree, austpost rates are quiet competitive. Those rates you mentioned, I assume only apply to letters (sending as a letter). You can't send a mug as a letter nor for that price. I'm guessing op is not posting sd cards.

        • +1

@whooah1979: I must be doing it wrong. Cost me 8 bux to send a small package about the size and weight of a tube of toothpaste to Canberra today.

        • @whooah1979: These are letter prices, no?

        • +1

          @zerovelocity:
<$3 is letter. <$6 is parcel post.

        • +1

@whooah1979: Wow. that much? It is so much cheaper to send letters and parcels from Asia to Australia, than it is within Oz.

Sounds similar to what Telstra did with phone calls, keeping STD rates > ISD rates from other providers. The prices have been dropping for 20 years but it's still cheaper to call Ireland than it is to call a local state or territory.

Such government-mandated status quos perpetuate a long, apathetic death for local businesses, and just support corrupt multimilliondollar CEOs.

AusPost remains headed for the wall regardless of who they put at the helm. Soon they will worse than USPS and sending mail in within Oz will be like playing roulette. And that is why the gubmint now forces us to use AusPost to for passports, why they broker bill payments and index and sell our personal information.

you're right. it would be a lot cheaper is we could pay workers with bananas.

        • +2

@zerovelocity: the foreign mail is subsidised by your one, once it hits our shore we pay for the post.

        • +1

@whooah1979: Indeed. And >5M/year for an untested CEO is quite a few bananas.

Imagine how much less the charges would be if he'd been replaced with someone who worked for a living.

And that said, AusPost doesn't need to make so much revenue. Efficient basic services actually support society, which is why the gov has to regulate to keep it running.

        • @Slippery Fish: Yes, but what has AusPost done to change that state of affairs, other than paying themselves more money?

These international arrangements were put in place by people for people. Why not maintain them?

        • +3

          @zerovelocity:

And >5M/year for an untested CEO is quite a few bananas.

ms christine holgate was the ceo of blackmores.

        • @whooah1979: Christine crashed Blackmore's shareprice pretty badly, so perhaps you're right on that one.

But I was referring to the long-unchallenged reign of Ahmed Fahour.

        • +5

          @zerovelocity:

mr ahmed fahour was more than qualified to be the ceo of auspost. he was the ceo of the nab, director at bcg, director at difx, chairman and director at rip curl, etc.

        • @zerovelocity: I'll do it for 1mil plus the ability to post myself anywhere in Aus for free.

        • +3

          @zerovelocity:
there is also speculation that mr ahmed fahour may be appointed ceo of amazon au.

        • @whooah1979:

How are you getting <$6 for a parcel Post?
Note again, we're talking about parcels/items that can not fit into a large envelope, because I have a feeling you are still referring to letter prices.

        • -3

@whooah1979: Mr Fahour's Which are precisely the qualifications you wouldn't want if you wanted the org to have a future… and as it turned out, others agreed with me so much they paid for heaven and earth to move him out.

Amazon can afford him tho, they too pay for their management's lifestyle by making the little guys pay- not to mention the workers… lol!

If your parcel is really small, Officeworks Mailman starts at $7.

You get tracking but no deliveries to PO Box, lockers etc.

  • +1

    For regular folk, nope.

    Couriers usually start around $10-$12.

You can get the metro satchels from Auspost that are slightly cheaper by a few cents, but as the name says they're limited as small area (eg Sydney only) and they come in packs of 10.

Really the only cheaper option is the 'large letter' if it's something thing (<20mm), but AusPost grumbles about them being used 'wrong' occasionally.

They use to have a 'petite parcel' that covered the gap between the two, but that's long gone.

    • Not sure which year you refer those rates.

      • +1

        Probably 1979…

        • Whooah!

  • +2

for rural deliveries - the flat price satchels are the cheapest, otherwise for metro, officeworks and sendle can be cheaper but dont have any insurance like post does (default is $50).

  • +4

    have you tried Sendle?

    • Thanks, it is probably the only alternative. Slightly pricier (some cents) but they pick up from your home. Should give it a try! )

    • Dont use sendle if you are sending any device with a battery - it contravienes their terms of carriage. Post will still take it but send it by truck as opposed to air.

  • -3

    Is there any cheaper way?'

Maybe Auspost is cheapest but do they actually deliver?….

    • officeworks partnership with fastway as far as I know.

  • +1

e-go.com.au offers Platinum Account holders rates as low as $7.05 for overnight delivery to same metro area for up to 1kg, and $10.45 quick delivery to other for interstate metro area's.

e-go / hunter express (same company) are a bunch of (profanity)

      Do not recommend

      https://www.productreview.com.au/p/e-go.html

      • +1

I've only ever had good experiences with Hunter. Also, I'd only take the product review website with a pinch of salt, when do people ever go out of their way to leave good reviews.

        • -1

Ditto, I've received very large packages (bed mattress, playset) from Hunter and never had an issue. Booked online/over the phone and they turned up and took the packages into the backyard and all.

        • -1

There are lots of horror stories online, not just review sites.

WHEN you have a problem, they will (profanity) you over.

  • -1

    Bikies.

  • Slightly off topic but when I sell an item on ebay and print my label for $7.4, do I get a box or just the label? If i want to get a box or packet from AUspost, will it cost extra?

Listed a game on ebay, woke up today getting notification of it being sold to my surprise.

    • +1

Just the label, Australia Post sells boxes and bubble wrap in general.

    • +1

if the game box is like those ps3, you can just buy express medium envelope at around $6. As you have bought one already on eBay, you can just use any box as long as it's less than 500g for that $7.40.

    You can search courier services

    au.interparcel.com/

OZ Post is expensive, but it's all comparative really. I've sent over 300 parcels of varying sizes in the last 12 months, both here and to OS. Only 1 has gone missing, this was all through OZ Post. When I have tried couriers, they have been very unreliable, even just not turning up and lying about it, misquoting and dropping off at the wrong address.

The one that went missing, I tried to be clever and send something as a letter, so no tracking, etc. The receiver "claimed" it never turned up. I've come to the conclusion, at least at this stage, that I'm happy with OZ Post, because they are reliable.

  • +1

I've been using hubbed and they send up to 1KG for 7.15. So far the service has been really reliable and I'm quite impressed. I'm in VIC, most items going to NSW and SA usually arrive overnight and as for the rest of the country can take up to 4-5 days. They are a courier service and pick up from your home/business.

    • Do you need an account to send a parcel?

    • Thanks. If they have $7.15 for 1 kg they must hold the title of the cheapest ones.

      • Check out their extensive list of so called "remote postcodes' that incur an additional $10 charge.
Some of the post codes around me are listed and we are certainly not remote (about 35km from adelaide).

        • +1

personally id consider Adelaide to be remote

        • @daleyboy79: ho ho ha ha….

  • +1

    https://www.sendle.com/pricing

    Haven't tried it though.

    • I've sent a few hundred items off with them, they are great. They rely on the local courier network (not their own network) which is sometimes problematic (perhaps 1:10 ratio of couriers not bothering to turn up) but on follow up the Sendle staff are outstanding in chasing up their 3rd party couriers.

Cheapest parcel rate with Auspost is $7.60…with you supplying the packet.Outrageous.The Government owes it's citizens three essentials…a good education system,a good health system and an affordable & reliable postal service. The rest we can figure out thanks.

  • +1

They might be the cheapest, but they are also the worst

At a minimum go for express post so you can at least track where the (profanity) your items are.

I had a relative take my car and house keys home by accident last week. She took them to the local post branch (inside her local newsagent) who only had regular post satchels, no express.

Posted them to me last monday - they have yet to turn up. She's central coast NSW, I'm Sydney CBD - a 1hr drive, and it's been 7 business days.

With no guarantee or even (profanity) to give, i'm assuming Aus post took her $8 portage and threw my keys in the bin :(

  • +2

express post so you can at least track where the (profanity) your items are.

Regular parcel Post via click and send (may have changed names now) provides online tracking. You don't have to get express to get it tracked.

If parcel is taking longer than stated to arrive, contact them and initiate investigation- more useful than just whinging and hoping.

  • So many of these threads making it to the popular discussions. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation.

I think it's because more people are wondering why is it cheaper to mail something from another continent than it is to do so within the same state.

I know the details but the outcome is still laughably sad for local retailers.

  • Only $6.60 if you buy below satchels with stamps & Tracking no
