What Pillow Do You Use?

Hi fellow Ozbargainers,

I'm on the hunt for a new pillow! My old cheap one I got from Ikea has served me well but I think it's time for a proper upgrade.

Just wanted to know what pillow you are currently using, cost, where you bought it, and if you're happy with it.

Prefer a low pillow with decent firmness. Hate those big ones you get in the hotels that make your head rise.

Any comment is much appreciated!

Thank you.

Edit: It seems everyone is passionate about their pillow! Thanks for all the suggestions. A decision will be made soon :)

Memory foam - Ikea, probably around $40-50
    Nice and low and firm

    • +26

Bite marks stay too long with memory foam though :(

      • +1

        But tastes like yummy Horsemeat?

    • Always wanted to try memory foam. This week could be the time I take the plunge!

  • +3

Downtime memory foam pillow, medium profile. Pretty cheap from ebay.

I just get a cheap pillow case, and fill the insides with the daily lint built-up in my belly button.
So far I have a full pillow set, and now a really long body pillow for me to snuggle with at night. I'm so lonely :(

  • Mediflow waterbase pillow. Words can not describe. the best.

    • +1

OMG… water filled pillows exist… sound amazing.
Can you hear the …. water movements when sleeping… my bladder might hate that…

      • not if you fill it up properly. you have to push all the air out when you put the cap on, easy.

  • -1

Depends on the use - need a different pillow for s******g, w******g, f*****g

    • +3

Isn't that what flat mates pillows are for?

    • +19

      Standing, Walking, Fishing?
      Do I win a prize?

  • +1

cheap one from kmart or nothing. Normally perfer a pillow for my dribbling

  • +16

    Latex.

Memoryfoam just creates a 'dink' that your head is held in, which if you want to move you have to 'climb' out of.

  • Best one was from my Physio. Cost about $150. Most of the cheap pillows are crap.

    • What was the difference? did you feel as if you had a better posture? Did you previously have back or neck problems? Were they fixed?

      • Biggest difference was variation in size/thickness which impacts posture as you sleep. Most people are sleeping on pillows that are too big. You should ideally be on a pillow that is relatively thin/"low profile", but that also provides the right support for your neck via latex or memory foam. Of course it does depend on your body size to some degree. But my Husband had back problems before the pillow change and they have largely been resolved since. He is a pretty lean athletic guy so most of the pillows were just way too high profile for him.

    Costco.

  • +3

I prefer Latex high profile, I have these two and they are exactly the same so better off getting it from Kmart. I paid $30 each as I got the Soren pillow on sale.

    http://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/bed%2cbath-%26-home-decor/bed…

    • Do you find it good for side sleeping? I'm getting to much pressure on my shoulder when lying on my side using my crappy pillow

      • +2

Yep I'm a side sleeper so high profile is recommended. Unlike other pillows latex holds it shape and profile for much longer, have had mine for over a year and its still the same shape and has retained its high profile.

    • They good? Got back problems from current pillows :(

  • I use a Target Body Shaper pillow - love it.

  • Tontine Memory Foam Pillow which i purchased for about $40, has literally resolved all issues i had prior to having it while trying to sleep.

  • +3

Those bamboo ones that were $30 until recently but now $10 (bought at shopping centre "bamboo deluxe". They have memory foam on the inside I was quite surprised at the level of comfort.

    Dunlopillo

      +1 Dunlopillo

This is recommended by the Barefoot Investor… I think I have to invest in one of these myself!

    • +1

Definitely this, had tried several cheaper Latex ones from Target, HS, Myer etc and found their original shape didn't last for too long before going lumpy.

Finally bit the bullet and got the classic Dunlopillo latex on sale (around $70 from Myer, past deal on here) and it's been perfect for over a year, without even mentioning the comfort it's worth it imo.

    • +1

+1, occasionally on sale @ Myers.

  • +1

    Micro cloud pillows, they're great

    • +1

      but sooooo tiny

  • +5

    Clean laundry.

  • +2

A latex pillow, Cloud Soft I think is the name. I'm a back sleeper and it perfect for me

  • +2

The medium contoured Dunlopillo memory foam. Don't buy anything else https://www.dunlopillo-bedding.com.au/therapillo-memory-foam…
The contour gives you options to decide which side suits you and if you're a back or side sleeper.
Our current one is the same shape and firmness as when we bought them three years ago, and make sure you buy it on sale for about half price if money is an issue.

Combine that with a memory foam mattress https://www.ergoflex.com.au/
Ours is the same shape as when bought 5 years ago for under $1k

I don't want to sound cliched but this will revolutionise your sleep comfort. Works very well at combating back and neck pain/tension.

I used to use the latex pillow and it is not as comfortable and doesn't last anywhere near as long.
I have also tried other cheaper inferior pillows and they made our bin more comfortable.

  • +3

Dentons medi-rest pillow. I got mine on special at Myer a couple of years ago. Can't remember what I paid for it but whatever it cost, it was worth every cent.

    • +1

Same sentiments here. Got it at David Jones where they let me try a few out.

    • +1

Agreed. Onto my second Dentons now, the medi-rest is even better than the first one. Think it was about $50-60 on special but well worth it.

    • I've been buying Denton's for years and haven't looked back. Best latex pillow I've found, I like medium-hard firmness, partner likes soft.

  • +1

I've just upgraded from a memory foam pillow myself. Side sleeper.

I recently bought a latex pillow and researched the dunlopillo which was well reviewed. However the recent reviews seam to indicate the quality has dropped significantly in recent years and they are now made in china.

Decided to buy a dentons contour latex pilot from pillow talk. The very first night I slept on it I noticed a significant improvement in my neck and back pain. Love it. Great investment.

    Dentons arw Australian made too

    • +1

I read the exact same thing about dunlopillo on forums

  • +9

I use what ever pillow I can find after the misssus and the kids have raided all the good ones. I bought two new tontines the other day but whereabouts currently unknown suspects are many. Last seen on kitchen table, should have put them in pillow cases straight away and they would have never known. Is not a case of you snooze you loose as my head did not even touch the pillow.

  • +2

I bought myself a nice grooved memory foam pillow and… Went back to using my Kmart pillow. The groovy thing kind of hurt my neck. I also got a regular shaped memory foam pillow which is amazing, but I have that in a different bed so I don't really use it much.

The BEST pillow I have ever used was a Tempur memory foam pillow which was on a mattress I tried at some shop. Was 200$ but occasionally comes down to 100$

  • Looking at some of these suggestions. Some pillows are $100-200! Can't imagine myself spending anything more than $100 for a pillow. Is it really worth the extra cash on quality?

    • +1

Yes, you're in bed for 7-8 hours a day.

    • Well you are using it 8 hours a day

    • +1

Yes, you spend a quarter of your life sleeping. Worth the investment

      • +2

A quarter? You underestimate my abilities in bed!

        • haha. Well 1/4 sleeping and maybe another 1/3 doing adult things

        • +1

          @enslaved07:

          No no, it's all sleeping!

  • Mine was only $85 with discount. I'd been spending a lot on physio and remedial massage and thought it was a good investment. Certainly saved me money IMO

    • That's the only time I would consider spending big on a pillow - when it's heavily discounted.

  • Dunpillow Therapillo Medium. These are fantastic and will dramatically change the quality of your sleep.

    Memory pillows are amazing.

  • +4

A good latex. Like laying your head on boobies. Instant sleep.

    • +1

      1000% agree here

  • If you're looking for a soft side sleeper, Target has an amazing Side Sleeper pillow. Flattens within a month of use.
kmart has a nice memory foam pillow with cooling gel which is amazing IMO. Offers great neck support but I would only use this as a back sleeper.

  • Tempur Symphony. Can't sleep on anything else.

  • I've tried the soft, medium and hard pillows, then tried latex, but finally settled on a memory foam pillow I picked up from Target. Best pillow to date and have had the best sleep with it.

  • +1

I have tried nearly every pillow and after about 7 years of searching I finally found one that I love.. I won't buy another type anytime soon..

I got mine from spotlight, they come on sale for half price from time to time.. they are on sale now, but not half price..

    https://www.spotlightstores.com/bed/bedding/pillows/logan-ma…

    • Talalay Latex - like Dunlopillo. 👍🏻

  • Target Memory Foam Pillow $25

It is amazing quality for the price.
    I've tried Sheridan; Dunlopillo; Tontine.

Trust me the Target pillow is better than all of them.

    https://www.target.com.au/p/standard-pincore-memory-foam-pil…

  • get your a@% back to ikea and buy another of their amazing pillows…

  • I finally bit the bullet and went with a dunlopill, medium profile, soft feel, I'm a side/tummy sleeper.

It's so good. Wish I went sooner

    • 👍🏻

  • target brand wool firm pillow on sale for 10 dollars, buy and stock up whenever i can, true ozbargain

  • I spent many hours trying pillows out at Harvey's, Forty Winks all the big names. Had never spent more than $20 on a pillow so thought it was time to invest in my sleep.

Got this one for $129 - A.H Beard Natures Rest Plush Talapilo latex. BEST $129 I've ever spent!!!!!

    https://www.bedsonline.com.au/ah-beard-natures-rest-plush-ta…

Trust me you will not look back. I even want to take this on holidays with me

  • +2

I use a sack of leaves

    • Yes. It goes down during summer and I refill mine during autumn.

  • +1

I have a big head. Full stop. Haha. Anyway +1 for the Dunloppo pillow latex, it is the perfect softness with a lot of cheaper latex pillows I've tried feeling a lot harder more towards the center, whereas the dunluppo (no idea how to spell it) is the same softness throughout.

For memory foam surprising I got these https://www.beddingwarehouse.com.au/gel-memory-foam-pillow/ (haggled and got two for $100 - impulse purchase whilst waiting for the tram for work) they feel nice but I still prefer the latex, mrs like the memory foam. shrugs

and the sack of leaves works great too. it starts to smell after a while.

    • You know what they say about having big heads..

  • Got a Tempur a while back, not that great, used it for about 12 months. Anyone had similar experiences?

I find my Target pillow better.

    • +1

Tempur pillows suit Tempur mattresses. I have both and love it. Best sleep ever.

I won't use the Tempur if I'm sleeping on the spare bed though (euro pillowtop pocket spring)

      • I thought that might be the case but wasn't too sure. Thanks for the info.

  • Everyone likes something different.

If you go for memory foam, you can check, a proper one will be quite heavy.

  • Just from the comments, I'll probably get a Dunlopillo. I'm a side sleeper so I think this one will suit me well.

    https://m.myer.com.au/shop/mobile/mystore/talalay-latex-medi…

Is this the one every is raving on about?

    • Yes, but there are also high and low profile versions, I highly suggest you go and try them all in person at Myers - lie on one of their beds and try out the height difference.

      • Cheers mate. Will do this weekend.

  • The comfortable one.

Try them out. A question like yours is like asking what size shoe we wear.

    • +1

Just trying to get some brand ideas because I've never bought a proper quality pillow :)

      • Lots of rebadged OEM stuff out there. Brands don't really mean much.

I have two identical pillows (one bought whilst on overseas holidays cause hotel pillow sucked). Liked it so much I went looking for one in Melbourne. Found it, different brand. Overseas price ~AUD$30. Local price ~AUD120.

Absolutely identical down to the included pillow liner.

  • Aldi had pillows few weeks ago. Latex or memory foam. Not sure about the quality though. They did look quite good though.

  • A foam neck support pillow (not latex),

from a family member who didn't like it

very happy with it, still using it 19 years later
