How Much Is Too Much for a Coffee? How Much Do You Spend Per Week?

How much is too much to pay for a coffee? Where do you get your coffee? What coffee do you get? How much do you spend per week on coffee?

I'm trying to cut down on my coffee costs at the moment so would be great to hear your opinion :)

EDIT: While free office milk, coffee, tea bags and machines are great, as is making it at home, I am talking about getting my coffee while I am out, flasks are not really practical for me (Btw I am at uni full time)

  • 711 - $1 a day. I take out $20 bucks from ATM to get $2 coffee for $1. I want caffeine. Cheap caffeine.

Technically, if all you want is cheap caffeine, then powders or tablets would be the best option.

  • McDonalds Drive Thru. Medium latte is around $4.40 from memory. I'll only get them when I have a 6am start at work, maybe 2 or 3 days per week. Not amazing coffee but it's the only place that's open before 6 and on the way.

I'd gladly pay $10 for it though. There's no way I'm not having one at that hour.

  • Any Adelaideans here members of SkyCity Casino. That's 2 x free coffee a day and TBH, they're a lot better than instant coffee, with many extra options (mocha, hot choc, chocomilk and even tomato soup).

  • I keep a French Press in my drawers at work with grounded coffee. It's similar to the Aero Press mentioned earlier but a lot better than instant coffee (in my subjective opinion). As long as the place has boiling water and milk then it will work. For takeaway coffee, there are a few places that cut 50c off if you bring your own cup but it's limited to rare cafes (based on the environmental "responsible cafes" campaign against disposable cups).

    • A cafĂ© on campus reduces the price by 30c if you bring your own cup - but is expensive to start with - with discount it is $3.50 for a "regular"

    • "I keep a French Press in my drawers"! Is that a euphemism?

You get what you pay for, $2.80 is burnt roasted cheap asian beans, may was well pay $3.50 and have an enjoyable experience.

    • Burnt roasted cheap Asian beans hahaha
Or you could pay 80c at coles express / $1 at 7-11 and have an enjoyable coffee for less!

      • if im just after caffeine hit, i sometimes use a small cup and do double espresso for $1 xD

dont know if its me but coles coffee has no effect and im fairly sensitive to caffeine

        • How can you do a double espresso for $1 though? I'm keen to try this but it fills the cup? Let me know your ways xD

        • @pennypincher98: the short espresso is just the coffee shot, when it finishes, click it again!

        • @donkeydoc: hahaha so I click espresso twice? Sorry this is just from someone who only has eyes for the lattĂ© button ;)

  • Mine is mostly provided in office and at home on weekends.

When I go out coffee is about $4 all around. Much more than that and I'd feel ripped. And it better be good for $4 too!

It's hard to seperate how much I spend on coffee per week. I eat out for breakfast once or twice a week as a treat for myself and that costs $17 including the coffee. I'll have a more elaborate breakfast out about once a month for me and my partner and that's closer to $45.

It doesn't matter too much as long as you're budgeting for your bills now and in the future. As long as you're comfortable then it's nice to have a little spending money on little things each month without having to count pennies. I explicitly budget that spending money aside each month.

  • I cup of Maccona in the morning and a expresso in the afternoon. No more no less.

Occasional rare get a regular size from Gloria if I can't have expresso in the afternoon. :)

I drink coffee for the taste. I can live without it. Lately I've been having green tea every morning to wake me up. If I need an extra boost for the day then I'll have a coffee. I'm not too fussy so instant is fine with me. I do appreciate a nice cup of professionally made coffee but I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it.

    My day:
    1. Do a balance enquiry at the 7-11 and collect a voucher on the receipt (or save time by picking receipt from the trash next to the ATM)
    2. Fill a large or super-sized coffee for the price of a regular (save $1 or $2)
    3. Queue to pay behind homeless guy buying full price coffee
    4. Get back into high yield car and drive to Westpac.

      OMG!!! LIGHT BULB!!

I can't believe I didn't even think of using someone else's receipt! That is an absolutely smashing idea! Almost need a new screen I hit that +1 so hard xD
      Thanks for the tip!

  • Buy a plunger + buy some ground coffee = save money plus still have good coffee.

Free coffee from hey you op:

    • I saw this, going to try it out this morning in one of 2 coffee shops participating in Macquarie Centre :)

  • Ikea - $2 free refills. Choose latte, cappucino and it all tastes like frothy milk. I can force myself to drink about 6 cups of it each visit.

  • The only downside of the 7-11 coffee (apart from the coffee) is the prevalence of bums. Had a run-in with one this morning. After telling him to (profanity) off he walked directly out into traffic and crossed George Street.
