How Much Is Too Much for a Coffee? How Much Do You Spend Per Week?

How much is too much to pay for a coffee? Where do you get your coffee? What coffee do you get? How much do you spend per week on coffee?

I'm trying to cut down on my coffee costs at the moment so would be great to hear your opinion :)

EDIT: While free office milk, coffee, tea bags and machines are great, as is making it at home, I am talking about getting my coffee while I am out, flasks are not really practical for me (Btw I am at uni full time)

Plus the hours to actually plant it and maintain it while it grows.

        • Plus lets not forget the value of the land. In sydney an internatial student would pay top dollar for that kind of living space

  • +4

Maccona gold… the snobs instant coffee.
But I'm still an oz bargainer.. so I wait for it to be half price!

  • +2

I pay nothing, keep going to Hardly Normal coffee demo got friendly with the demo girls and usually get endless Nespresso. Same at Good Guys.
At home I use them all alu capsules from Lor at Coles they go on special plenty of times so cost are down.
My Nespresso machine played up just outside its 2 year warranty, just the switch so asked the ACCC and they say it must be 100% covered but Nespresso refuses to do anything about it, all Queensland repairers have quit so I never buy original capsules anymore unless I happen to stumble across a boutique so I buy one stick and go with missus go get 2 free demo ones.

    • +1

Hahaha nice! Thanks for the tip LOL.
Nah pity there is no real HN near me or uni, 7-11 is closer :)

    • +2

the all alu single origin caps from Coles by Lor (at half price) are probably the best pods I've had out of the ones you can buy in a supermarket. Some of the website delivered ones are good, but the cost is too prohibitive.

  • I usually get anywhere from 4-6 coffees from 711 (mix of $1-$2).

When at home I use Breville Milk Cafe (frother) and add instant coffee (Nescafe gold) to milk directly and it normally turns out alright. 711 is better though.

I tried the Aldi pods at a friends house but I can taste chemicals in it? Not sure whats up with that because everyone else loves those.

  • +1

I go for the aldi expressi pods, when they go on sale with their bulk packs (typically by 5 get 1 free) they end up costing around 25c a pod. I bought a year's supply of pods for around $200, so that's about 2 pods a day. Sure it isn't as cheap as instant, but it's a pretty decent cup of coffee at a reasonable price.

    • 25c a pod, $200, so 800 pods for a year supply? 2 cups a day?

    • I heard Aldi uses the largest pods and they supposed to also accept 2 competing formats who are slightly smaller but still work. Anybody out here tried it?

  • +3

How does 7 11 coffee technically compare to real cafe coffee?

    • +3

For $1 its good. Beats paying $3-$4 for a 'good' coffee in my opinion.

    • Rubbish in comparison

      • +1

        I would rather have 4 average-good coffees than 1 good-great coffee personally :)

  • +1

Has anyone tried coles express coffees? Have a few vouchers for free coffees there!

Note: if you are a student, you can sign up for studentedge do a short (2-10 mins, depending) survey and redeem it at giftpax for 6 coffees at coles express :) Also if you reside in VIC you can get a free small mccafe coffee with order over $3 via studentedge also. I'm not in vic though :(
Best deal I've managed to find.

    • I do the same thing, except the only thing that is worth redeeming the giftpax vouchers for are the wraps. The 6 coffees or whatever it is for $10 is a rip off, you can get those same coffees for 80c anyway!

      • I thought they were $1.50 each?? Bargain if its 80c! Yeah I have got wrap vouchers as well but wow they are pricey (~$7)!!

      • I just looked and the coffee hit is 6 regular coffees. Not smalls.

So 1.5 X 6 = $9! Only costs $9 for it so is the best value imo. Don't lose any money in the transactions :)

    • Hi op

Yea ive tried them their actually quite good the froth generated by the machine is pretty good and the coffees taste is on par with pther coffees i have tried. They definately have the best value rating

80c is for the small and 1.50 for the regular which is about the same as a large in some cafes i have visited.

      • Hey,

That's awesome! Thanks for the info! How would you say it compares to 7-11 (if you have tried?) and what types of coffees do they have there?

  • I'm also lucky enough to get it basically free from work. Weekly milk delivery, coffee beans for the machine at work (which is crap) but I'm allowed to take some home and grind up for the week. It's only supermarket Lavazza style stuff, but good enough for me! The only outlay was the cost of a 2nd hand Sunbeam coffee machine.

I have workmates who buy daily, some 2 or 3 times a day. Certainly adds up but they still call me stingy for thinking that. Maybe because of the perception the coffee anyone makes themselves is never as good as the work cafes that you pay for but I disagree.

Besides that's like an AliExpress order every day! (e.g. random electronics bits I buy often)

  • if you work close to Starbucks, abuse their french pressed sample - they throw it out regularly anyway.

    • Would this be a good time to say I've never been to a starbucks before? :)

      • +1

Keep it that way. Except for the free "coffee" on your birthday via their glitch app.

        • Nah I'll be so full of everything else on my birthday I won't even get to Starbucks :D

    • What's this?

  • Zero. I don't like coffee.

  • I have an espresso/cappuccino machine at home, bought it for a bit under a grand 6 or 7 years ago.

Coffee beans are on sale pretty regularly, so I can usually pick them up for $15-20/kg.

    Same arrangement at the office.

    • And how much is a regular?

      • At the moment in perth regular and large both are $2

        • Well I'm not sure.. My nearest Caltex is a Woolies one and isn't big enough to have coffee?

        • Starmart caltex is selling coffee at $2.

  • +4

Makes me laugh reading all these comments. I too used to waste a huge amount of money on daily coffees… Until one day I decided I was gonna be smart with my money. Invested 80k in a car and have never looked back. Really enjoy impressing everyone which kind of stimulates me more than coffee anyway

    • How is spending 80K on a car an investment?
Do you know how much it is worth now?

  • +1

Hate coffee. Free hot chocolate and coffee from a decent machine at work. One of the few perks I have left.

Addicted to Coke Zero/No Sugar though - so costs me quite a bit. I try to get it for under 60c/can but probably go through 4 a day.

    • +2

Free Coke No Sugar from 7 11 and Coles is still on

  • 2 boxes of aldi capsules a week

  • Don't pay more than $3.50 for a take away barista coffee, you shouldn't have to.

  • +1

Find a place which does a discount for BYO cup.

some places have an early bird 'happy hour' in south Melbourne where i was working there was a place with a decent cup for $2.80 and another place for $3 i think

  • $3.9 per day for a coffee at the cafe then the wollies select instant, black and no sugar x 2.

  • +1

Seems like half the planet is on drugs. Imagine if you were an alien race and you visited a planet and found that half it's species consumed a drug daily in order to function? How odd would that be?
"Caffeine is a stimulant drug, which means it speeds up the messages travelling between the brain and the body." - https://adf.org.au/drug-facts/caffeine/

    • +2

hey, at Least its not crack

  • In the sage words of a certain Motley Crue song "…I get it for free" ;)

  • I usually make at home (I have a machine) or if I get one out it will be a 7/11 one once a week. (With the ATM coupon). I never buy a coffee at the shops or work too much of a tightarse.

That being said my sister and I just got a coffee at a festival in Stockholm Sweden for about $8.50 Australian each (ouch).

  • +4

Coffee at Coles Express is 80 cents. It does the trick for me!

    • +1

      Username checks out!
Yeah I'll have to get on to this as well lol

  • I spend $2 or $4 a week on coffee at Costco, depending on whether I drink 1 or 2 of their enormous cups.
    Last week I spent $4.

If I'm buying ground coffee for home use, I think the ALDI Lavazza coffee tastes pretty good.
I think it's $13/kg and I use 15g at a time, which works out at $0.20 per cup.

edit: whoops, I forgot the milk. I have 200ml of milk with my coffee which is also $0.20 per cup

$0.40 for my homemade coffee, including milk.

  • 7-11 coffee, $1 multiple shots as you pay for the cup not for what's in it.

I pay somewhere between $5 - $10/week on coffee depending on how much coffee I need that week.

  • +6

I spend about 4 or 5 African kid sponsorship's worth per week

  • i would never spend any money on coffee. I often get them from hj shake n win but even then i sometimes decide to give it a miss. If its instant i prefer Moccona and not blend 43.

    • But hungry jacks coffee is terrible… It's the only coffee I need sugar in its that bad.

      • +2

when did you have HJ coffee last?
They have espresso machines now, same as everywhere else.

        • Just the other week, their "100% arabica beans" are a load of hogwash it takes terrible…

I don't know how they manage to make it taste bad coming out of an espresso machine but they do. Was $1 for the bad stuff, but at least it was coffee. Now they told me they want to charge $2.95 for a SMALL!!

You could actually get good coffee for that much, or a reasonable sized one.

        • @pennypincher98:

Actually, I might have an insight into that. When I go to my local Hungry Jacks, it's characterised by being filthy. Typically the staff stand around chatting with each other.

The contrast with McDonalds is interesting actually. The staff there are always cleaning. (The food tastes awful but that's another story)

So your coffee might have tasted bad because the espresso machine hadn't been cleaned properly.

I agree with you about the cost of their coffee too. The price now is ridiculous.

        • @mranderson978: Oh the espresso machine hasn't be cleaned.. That makes me sick to think about so I'm going to forget that you said that :)

  • I think it's about 20 a week, including my share of the purchase of 250g of coffee for home filter usage. I only get coffee out about once a week now. It's almost all sink into home espresso and filter.

  • Luckily for me we have a multitude of coffee machines at work, so I drink at least 2 mugs of decent quality coffee a day.
I still spend about $10-$15 a week on coffee while I'm out with friends.

    • 7/11 $1 or Coles 80c coffee in a keepcup
    • Aldi freeze dried instant coffee at home (both decaf and dark roast)
    • Heyyou and Skip offers to get free or cheap cafe coffee
    • Uni faculty free instant coffee if required
    • rare free coffee when a new cafe opens up
    • I treat myself to cafe coffee once or twice a month. I usually get a piccolo latte (cheaper and better) or a mocha double shot.
    • +1

My fave is a piccolo latte as well :)
If a uni was to have free coffee, where might it be?
Will also definitely look at heyyou and skip for free café coffee!

      Thanks!

  • +1

I simply don't spend anything on coffee while I'm out. I can wait to get home and have my coffee freshly grounded with my jura machine. Or if I really want a coffee I'll use my keepcup put coffee inside that before i leave the house.

  • +1

Shell coles 80 cents coffee makes my day:)

    • +1

yep, that or a $1 711 is OK . not the best coffee in the world, certainly not the worst either (better than maccas at 4x the price)

  • +2

    400g moccona / 3 months

    $16 / 3 months

    ~ 20c per day

To boil 1l of water / day ~ 0.15kwh say 5c with service charge proportioned

    100ml milk ~ 10c

    Approx 35c per day

Then 1 or 2 coffee shop coffees per week

    (9 + 4.5) /2 = 6.75

    • 2.45

    = $9.20/ week

  • aromas Noosa, $5-$6 is way too much I think. And it doesnt taste that great either.

  • +1

250g Atomica beans a week ($10) for with the Breville dual Boiler, first coffee of the day.
One bought coffee a day ($4.20 but I use a loyalty card so $3.70)
Third coffee made at work with the free machine (average quality).

So that's $520 a year for beans and about $950 for daily coffee while at work. Let's say $1.5k PA.

    WORTH IT

  • i rarely buy coffee… because its bad for you

at best i drink free coffee at work but really how much bloody 43 bean or international roast can you take

i might get a mocconna at home

the only time i buy coffee is after a big event… like i got a morning flight from perth and need a pick me up

    • Lol I get that coffee is bad for you but personally although I have never taken 'recreational' drugs I could liken it to that, you forget that it is bad because you are so lethargic you just want to make yourself useful.

Yes, a coffee addiction in its purest form. But with that being said I can spend 4 hours easily on transport per day, eg leave at 7am and get back at 6:30pm. My actual classes might only be 10am - 4pm but trains hate me and make sure I arrive either 45 minutes early or 15 minutes late.

      • Coffee is not bad for you. There is lots of recent research that says it is good for us; in moderation.

        • The only thing is I don't have it in moderation hahaha xD

  • I walk into my neighbors and drinks his coffee, then leave

  • +5

was hoping for more coffee connoisseurs (not snobs, please, not everyone drinks coffee just as a stimulant) to chime in, then realise this is ozbargain, so I digressed a little, but still to offer another perspective and score myself a few neg votes - coffee is one thing I don't scrimp on.

2 coffees a day, 5 days a week at specialty coffee shops in Perth city. (e.g. smooth operator, small print, standing room only, etc)
    $4 for a small-regular milk coffee at 10am
    $3-4 for a small-regular batch brew/filter coffee after lunch
all specialty coffee places should give you a double shot in your espresso based drink for free if they are worth their reputation in salt.

2 bags of specialty roasted beans per month depending on whether I get them imported from syd/melb - it may cost me more. But I have a wholesale account with Dukes so it only usually cost me $30 per month for either filter or espresso roasted single origin beans. This is for my pre-work coffees I make myself at home, which is, for all intents and purposes, a cafe grade fit out and a sizable investment that I'm proud of and I personally feel is worth every penny.

    Main Extraction Devices:
Rocket R58 Dual boiler - $3800 (bought 3 years ago)
    Moccamaster classic - $380
Misc. manual brewing tools (kalita/v60/kruve/acaia scales etc) - $500

    Grinders:
Mahlkoenig EK43 for cupping Single Origins - $1500 (split the cost with a mate, bought with a wholesale account and changes hand every quarter)
Mahlkoenig Vario my daily driver to grind coarser for pourovers and batch - $650 (bought 3 years ago)
Kompak k3 touch my daily driver to grind finer for espresso - $350 (Bought 2 years ago)

Average cost of servicing equipment every year is roughly $200 with a friend's commercial account.

Bought coffee cost over the year: $1,820.00
Coffee subscription cost over the year: $360.00
Coffee equipment cost per year amortised over life of equipment (10 years): $718.00
    Total cost per year: $2,898.00

Roughly a fortnight's salary to have good quality coffee coursing through my veins throughout the year? sounds fair to me. If you view enjoying coffee in the same light as enjoying a good glass of wine, you will understand why the aforementioned costs could be considered bargain worthy.

P.S. also have no idea why people here still default to thinking coffee is an unhealthy beverage, there are plenty of articles for both sides of the debate, a solid verdict isn't out as yet, but evidence of late is suggesting that coffee is indeed good for you. Perhaps if you OD on copious amounts of badly brewed shelf bought blend 43 and have an unhealthy addiction of more than 6-8 shots a day or if you fancy too much milk or sugar in your coffees, I could see why. Freshly grinded coffee brewed correctly should taste great without additives (milk and sugar) and in moderate amounts has positive effects on both the palate and body, that much is known.

    • +5

Finally. I read three pages of "7/11" trash before someone finally spoke my mind. I work in Melbourne and have a multitude of great cafes around, prices vary from $3.50 to $4.50 for a small coffee, which I will usually have at least one, sometimes 2, maximum 3 (rare) per day - in addition to the morning ritual of one at home. Also, I spend about $14 per week on fresh beans, which myself and my wife use daily as our morning coffee.
Rancilio machine and Sunbeam burr grinder - not amazing, but does a very decent home coffee - often better then ones that I sometimes buy out when trying new places.

I might ad, in addition to the 'spending habit' I have developed priceless relationships with colleagues over a daily walk and cup of coffee - one of which even led to a job change with a $30k payrise.. perhaps not all because of coffee, but you never know how much. Sure, I didn't have to buy the coffee, could have had water, but we bonded over coffee and talked about our home machines and grinders.

In the end, for me, coffee is like a hobby that i enjoy. I enjoy high quality specialty coffee. Whatever you are into cars, bikes, hunting, fishing, boating, cycling, gadgets or gizmo's … great coffee is up there with the things that I personally enjoy in life.
I will never drink instant or 7/11 machine coffee, even if it's free.

      • +3

Another coffee lover after my own heart. +1 to relationships formed. I've made friends with colleagues I would otherwise only have small talk with in passing during this coffee excursions. More so, as a home barista, the relationships I've formed with the baristas at the cafes have been invaluable. I've learnt so much, made new friends and have at least hundreds worth in free beans and coffee during my visits. Not to mention the gesha/mokka cupping seshs I've been invited to.

There's something about coffee that breaks down walls and casualises the all too serious business relationships people form at work

  • +1

    https://www.amazon.com/Bru-Instant-Coffee-Roasted-Chicory/dp…

Get on this one from local indian shops. It's what we have back home!

  • Coffee is over-priced in Australia, it's got a high profit margin, the average price of a cup of Latte/Cuppacino/Flat White is $4.

    • Paid $4.5 for a small yesterday :/

      Didn't even taste that good

    • Well labour is pretty expensive here. Its the service expensive machines and rent you're paying for, the cafes are heavily reliant on 2 hours of peak coffee service to pay for everything.

  • Limit myself to 1 a week, on the mornings that I'm really not feeling it on the way to work. Saves you money and means the caffeine actually works and is not just giving you your daily fix. Rest of the time I drink tea at home or work for free. It's a simple expense to cut out of your daily routine that saves you a sizeable amount in the long run.

  • Used to pay for the occasional cafe made coffee.

Then got a Caffitaly pod machine (via OzBargain!)
I think it came with 120 pods.
Figured I'd buy less cafe coffee having my own pod machine.

Decided to try repack pods with my own bought grounds.
It wasn't very reliable but offered more brands to try.

Couldn't justify an espresso machine since my wife doesn't drink coffee.
So I got a moka pot. They are cheap (20$), though I had to pay more because we have induction stoves (90$).
This makes good coffee and I can use whatever grounds I want.

I still buy the occasional cafe made coffee but less often.
I don't know the $sums. I'm sure it's cheaper than solely drinking store bought coffee.

  • Spend about $70-80 each week on coffee.

First coffee in the morning and then coffees and meetings throughout the day.

I intentionally try and get away from the meeting rooms whenever possible.

Generally take turns at paying except when it comes to junior staff.

    • How many /day does that come to? bout 3 or 4 cups a day?

      • That's about right - 3 or 4 coffees each day.

Because I go there so often they charge $3 cup (instead of $3.80, plus paying for the coffees of junior staff. I personally, think it's a lot of coffee to have for myself (from a health point of view), but then I think of it as a necessary part of my job.

There are some rare occasions when I don't have a single coffee throughout the day and I don't even realise it.

Oh, we do have free coffee at work in the form of a proper machine with coffee beans and milk. But that defeats the purpose of actually going out.

        • You go out 3 - 4 times a work day for coffee?
          (not judging :) , just surprised )

        • @telljoolz:

You go out 3 - 4 times a work day for coffee?

It's a lot, I know. I'm pretty much the middle man in all the work that I'm responsible for. It's all about getting the right people (many of who are not my direct reports) to get the work done and building relationships. That naturally comes with a lot of politics (which I am not a fan of) so going out of the office is my way of minimising that.

  • +2

The smell and warm of a cafe is like sanctuary at the end of a cold and long commute to work. The warm and taste prepares me for the dread ahead. Once a day, It's worth it.

  • I bought a 1k coffee machine that gives me 2-3 cups of coffee everyday
At work I got nespresso machine.

I only buy coffee in the cafes when I need to socialise. Can't justify paying $5 for a cup that is worth $0.10 when brewed with my machine or $0.65 when brewed with the nespresso

    • But 85c or $1 is a completely different story :D
And I can get free coffees at Coles express using vouchers quite easy :)

  • 2 L'OR nespresso caps into my travel mug for the morning drive. I drink black, No milk, so not counting water/electricity /machine wear and depreciation it's just the pods.

Buying them on special is usually $3-$4 per pack and fill the cupboard with them. 10 per pack. So for weekly morning drive its $4max
Afternoon coffee from the Cafe across the road is $5 which I get maybe twice a week.

The weekend I'd go through maybe 10 coffees.

    $18 a week on coffee I'd say.

  • I don't drink coffee, it's drugs!

  • $0. Coffee is for grown ups.

  • +1

Free coffee from the machine in the office.
Free dehydrated coffee in the tin.
    Free tea.
    Free biscuits.

I still spend around $10 a week, somehow.

  • Coffee for me is about that caffeine hit, not the taste. So these days I'm running a caffeine IV drip. Works out to be $1.25 a day.

  • +1

I remember I went to a coffee shop when they had the shopsmall offer on from amex… I checked the map to make sure it was listed. I asked if they accepted amex and the guy/owner said "Yer we do but I charge $4" he said most people don't care as they are APS workers. So if I was to buy a standard coffee with amex i was looking at over $10!!! I checked the reviews of the cafe after walking out to find they recently changed their name….so many bad reviews yet people still buy from them

    • You could report them to Amex for excessive surcharges

      • Oh really … didn't know they had this I prob woulda at the time

  • i'd say no more then $5 a day

  • Ill say this it is all about getting the most out of it i pay $4.4 (Large) at the local Cafe in altona the Coffee is pretty amazing compared to what some people charge $4-5 for but i go get a cup on Sunday morning and read the paper which most of the time the Sunday paper would cost me $3 and if i go on a saturday the paper would probably set me back about $2.6.

  • Full size 2 group head Wega espresso machine at work, free beans & milk
    Also have free Nespresso
    And free instant coffee

When I am lazy I still buy coffee downstairs.
