Nice price! These are great little cameras.

    • +1

I found them incredibly frustrating to get setup to the point it never gets used.

Would have preferred to spend 3x the amount and got something that a) wasn't locked to the xiomi app and required annoying firmware updates.

      • +4

What did you find frustrating? I had it up and running in 5 minutes.

        • Have you setup motion detection ? I spent an hour and was clueless its now sitting in a draw .

        • +1

@qwerty: Yeah absolutely, I have it pointed out the front window and get an alert every time my rubbish bin falls over from the wind.

        • @Ryanek: how did you set up motion detection?

        • +4

          @mikeyeggwhites:
          * Go to My devices page in your app
          * Click on the camera
          * Top right there is a button […] which drops down a menu. Select the third menu item.
          * This takes you to Camera Settings
          * Click on the second menu item after "continued recording"
          * This takes you to the Alarm page where you enable the motion detection as well as set the sensitivty

You can also enable the smoke alarm detection which will notify you if that distinct alarm siren goes off in your home.

        • @Ryanek: never works for me… it sends a notification but the preview video dosnt exist..

        • +1

Perhaps the fact is speaks Chinese? I've got the hack installed on mine, but this far from "user friendly" device, at least for a non Chinese speaker

        • @mp3police: Check your locale is set to Mainland China.

        • @Ryanek: ill do that but yeah it just says start download thats it ..

welll i waited for ages and the video loaded seems to work fine and got auto daytime/night time on its quite a perfect security camera

        • It's directions are in Chinese.

It being locked to the xiomi app and China Region.
Not being able to connect it to my existing platform without firmware hacks which only sometimes work as function.
GOing back to step 1 after said firmware hack didn't work.

        • +1

          @Ryanek:

I have one of these cameras. On the Mi home app, I only have two options for quality:
          1. "High Quality 90KB/S"
          2. "Provincial Traffic 30KB/S"

Some youtube clips Ive seen - they have "Super"
          https://youtu.be/A0UwBi2uQNI?t=195

          Does anyone else have "Super"

        • +1

          @dp2014:

          Does anyone else have "Super"

I don't but my app is up to date. I'm guessing that setting is on an older version unfortunately.

        • @CVonC: thanks.

        • @Ryanek: champion, thank you

      • I agree, but once I got the hack setup it's sweet, rtsp feed of my pet tarantula :)

        • I got 2 of these cameras running with Blue Iris and they work like a charm; motion detection, alerts, etc. Very happy with them and will definitely recommend. Link to software here: http://blueirissoftware.com/

Old deal still running a little cheaper: $19.65 delivered at Gearbest, pay in $AU at checkout as it's currently cheaper that way. However buying through eBay might be prefered for the sake of $0.27 in case of issues.

    • G"day Hamza
I think you 'll get this on the mail quiker
      is that correct ?
      Thanks

      • They are both from overseas.

      • Yeah I wouldn't necessarily say Gearbest are quicker, there shouldn't be much difference.

    • The ebay deal ships from HK, but the seller is an Australian company. I paid 27c for the protection of the Australian Consumer Law.

    • Thanks, paid $2.20 for express shipping (1-3weeks instead of I think 3-7)

    • +1

      That one is more expensive.

      • lol no difference both from overseas but more expensive.

Noticed this thread, might be useful for some people.

I bought one of these recently. Great little device. Bought another, don't need it, don't care :)

  • +1

From what im reading in the forums there's too many unresolved issues with the new firmware right now, going to wait it out to see what they are able to resolve.

    • Is there a way to disable the firmware update?

      • Installing the update is an option - done manually - and they seem to come with the older firmware installed. So if you choose not to upgrade, it won't. I (manually) chose to update to see what would happen, assuming I could downgrade if necessary - but I can't seem to do it. Live and learn. ;-)

    • The latest stock firmware works fine buddy. Fang hacks however requires an old firmware version at the moment 😀

      • +1

I'm a bit clueless as to what the Fang hack actually does. Is it worthwhile installing it?

        • +3

Its good if you want to cast the stream over RTSP and connect it to a surveillance software package. I think the main reason is to escape the perceived watchful eye of the Chinese. You do lose some functionality such as motion detection if you don't use the cloud app.

If you are like me and couldn't care less if someone wants to waste their time looking at what is a boring static image 99% of the time then I see no reason to hack it.

The biggest concern is probably giving your Wi-Fi details during setup. Not sure how far down the pipe that information travels or if it is locally contained within the app.

        • +8

@LJH23: I'd be more worried about the PRC security goons if I actually lived in China, but as an Aussie I don't give a toss - what are they going to do publish the secret ingredient to my spag bol? (a pinch of curry powder, there I've saved them some time).

I did want to stream falun gong sermons as a joke, but really I'm allergic to all religions.

    • Mine (newer version with reset button rather than reset hole) is working fine with the latest firmware and latest Mi Home app (set to mainland China). Only issue is that I can't install the "Fang Hacks" that enable the option of local rtsp streaming. Annoying, but hey - less than $20. I'm thinking about getting another one so I can try the 'ultra wide angle' feature where you sit one on top of another and they join the images together….

      • Is it easy to install?

        • +1

Yes - Install app, setup account (area set to China), add you wifi.
plug in/turn on camera- the camera should start speaking to you (Mandarin i think).
add camera option from app, select the model, select next on app if the camera is talking, the app will then display a QR code, hold it in front of the camera it will now say something else and it is paired to your app, then play with the settings to set it how you like, took me a couple of minutes.

        • @xerot:

          I meant the Fang hack

        • Hi,
I bought two from last deal..
One is perfectly configured. But 2nd is not able to connect :(

        • @nightelves: yep. Follow the instructions to write the image to a microsd card, setup the camera then once that's done just insert the card. You hear a couple of ding noises that indicate the cd card has been mounted and the script should run enabling the web interface. From there you can then enable or disable the hacks.

        • @PlasticSpaceman:

Have you got a guide and is it straight forward to do?

      • I had trouble setting my third one up, the camera was shouting Chinese at me every few seconds for 20 minutes. Turned out I was on 5ghz wifi on my phone.

      • Mine is working with the app as well but I can't get it load the Fang Hack… It dings twice after I insert the SD card, but when I attempt to access the webpage (<ip>/cgi-bin/status) i don't get anything.

I've seen mentions of the light being blue? but mine starts as orange when first powered on, and then turns off (at which point the app can see it).

Any ideas on loading the hack on the new version with the setup button?

  • I have bad experience with SS but can't resist to get this one, thanks OP, hope to receive in this year :-)

  • +12

Can this be installed on top of mi Robot vacuum I bought recently? it will make a hell of home patrol cruiser. LOL

    • +1

It can be powered using a powerbank, so definitely possible to install on top of a RoboVac haha!

  • +1

    Thanks OP, pulled the trigger

this will the the third I have ordered. One from each of the last 3 deals that have popped up.
Still haven't actually got my hands on one yet o_O

    Rob.

  • +1

Do these have the back door for Chinese hackers to exploit?

    • +2

Yes, they do, that's why you flashed it with custom firmware when you get it.

  • I got this last time. NFI how to set it up as all the instructions were in Chinese. Might look up some YouTube videos later.

    • +2

      Here is what you do:

      1) Install the MiHome app on your phone. Make sure your phone is connected to a 2.4Ghz Wifi. The camera won't connect to 5Ghz.

      2) Plug in the camera and press the reset button until you hear a Chinese voice. (It will repeat this voice every few seconds)

      3) Add the device using the App (This should be pretty self explanatory). The app will ask you to input the Wi-Fi details. Once details have been input, it will display a QR code.

      4) Point the QR code displayed on the screen of your phone at the camera and it will read it. You will hear a different Chinese voice.

      5) Allow the camera to run through the setup process (as shown on the screen of your phone)

      • +2

For some reason I had to pick the chinese server on the mi home app to get my device activated. It didn't want to activate with the singapore or USA based server.

        • Correct. Good point.

  • What is the difference between the two models of this camera
    1. One has has a button to setup.
    2. The other has a hole to push a pin in.

Are there differences between the models?

    • I think you've nailed it.

      • So there are no differences? Only a physical push button?

        • No idea, I'm still waiting for mine 😂

        • I have the newer one which some people have reported issues with - either can't register on the cloud service or can't run the hacks. Mine came with the older version of the firmware but the factory seal had been broken & resealed (got from GearBest) so I suspect they may have downgraded the firmware before sending it out. Anyhow, I stupidly upgraded the firmware and found I can't run the hacks. Otherwise it works perfectly fine. I've tried downgrading, but no joy so far.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: let me know if you manage to downgrade, in the same situation

        • +1

          @mikeyeggwhites:

Easy to follow instructions on hacking the camera (DON't UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE THROUGH THE APP):
          http://bobbyromeo.com/technology/xiaomi-smart-1080p-wifi-ip-…

          Recently update guide is here:
          https://www.andryou.com/2017/07/11/setting-xiaomi-xiaofang-s… (including downgrade procedure)

If you have upgraded to firmware above 3.0.3.56, create the disk with the firmware hack above, then follow the instructions here:
          https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks/wiki/HowTo:-Flash-original-Xiaomi-firmware-from-sdcard-(factory-reset)#via-sdcard

        • @ozhaydos: champion, thanks

  • hello does anyone know if this can be used with port forwarding access for external IP/4G etc access?

    • If you use the standard cloud app, you don't need to do any port forwarding as you access the stream through your app.

If you hack it for the RTSP stream, you could set up a port forward to the stream but it would be open for the world to see. If that is the path you want to go down, you are better to set up a private VPN.

  • can this camera be used just to record the video stream to the sd card? if in case wifi is not available.

    • yes.

  • Quick question to the people who already hacked it using fang hacks.
Once the hack is applied and after that If the current wifi settings change for some reason, how would some one re connect the camera to the router with the newer wifi settings?

  • Does this camera come with a motorised remote control swivel arm or something? What’s yet fuss all about, why is it so big.

    • It's not that big. It's a 5cm cube and light enough to be held up by the magnet that's featured in the base.

      • Oh, it looks huge in the picture. No banana for scale.

    • Because it's cheap 1080p camera that can be installed with a custom firmware to integrate into your existing security system.

    • +1

you can attach it on your dog with a power bank for power. Thats the best you will will get.

  • Anyone know how to connect these to Synology Surveillance Software?

I've applied my camera with this hack https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks

I have no problem connecting the cam with my Android phone (RTSP), but I'm having problem connecting the cam to my Synology NAS Surveillance software.

    Help?

    • I am in the same boat - Fang hack applied successfully to latest model, works great on TinyCam app, but wont connect via RTSP to a couple of different VMS's (Orchid etc). Hope someone has a solution for both of us!

  • Great low price

  • Anyone know where you would buy these in Hong Kong in person at this price?

They are $149 HKD or $25 AUD from the official Xiaomi store here, plus a few extra bucks in currency conversion.

  • +2

    Price has gone up
    AU $28.95

    • +1

yeah $23.16 for me after the code

  • As far as I'm aware, the new firmware version region locks you out if you're not in China. I haven't tried it yet myself, but scared of bricking one of these dudes. Also, is there a way to stop firmware update reminders? I constantly get them when logging in, and it's annoying. Even changing orientation gives you the firmware upgrade prompt!

    Cheers

  • +1

how did you get $19.92 price says different?

  • Does this blow up my home internet by keep streaming video? I'm on ADSL2+…

    • +1

      max stream is about 120kb/s

  • I bought one from Zapals but only managed to get to the stage where it says it is connected to the router and then the internet. After some time later it will time out and tells me the setup has failed.

  • +2

    EXPIRED

  • +1

I've got two of these! they are awesome. great price also. my family use it to keep an eye on there dog during the day, after initial setup its easy to use, and if you set it to your homepage (on iPhone) it launches super fast

  • +2

How is this $19.92? I just inputed the code and it's giving me $23.16. Has prices gone up?

    • shame on them they have increased the price!

  • +2

Also check https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320538 for similar deal

  • thanks OP.. managed to buy 3 before expired deal

  • Hello there,
Wanted to know if this can store data to a SMB share ?

  • there needs to be a forum thread on this device. there are so many questions and different links to hacks and such.

would also see the same questions not repeated

    …….. and go!

  • Thoughts on what type of SD card to use with these?

I'm looking at the Samsung MicroSD Evo or Evo+

Evo has the similar read/write speeds, and Evo+ has fast read slow write

  • Posted yesterday. Estimated delivery at the end of October! Do they send mail by row boat these days?

    • The two I purchased 21/8 from this deal arrived this morning (exceeded my expectations to be honest)
