Just a note, this Tune Up software once expired, will start bombarding you with ads.. (No my name is not Antony York)

I got a call late at night from uncle and was asked to clean a 'possibly infected' PC, and AVG turned out to be the culprit, popping up with ads everytime the user logged on. Not a good look for a cleanup utility.

    • Thanks scrimshaw - so uninstall once the software expires. Don't know how to answer your second point - whether it was an inherent problem for everyone, or just bad luck for uncle

Don't even install this BS. AVG used to be ok 10+ years ago,but just clogs up your system and slows it down.

Install CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware and maybe MalwareBytes Antimalware and a manual scan once a month.
Unless you are a complete idiot and click on random ads etc all the time, your machine will more than likely never get a serious virus.

I spent 5 years working in retail computer repairs, 70-80% of machines that came in for virus cleanups had AVG installed and didn't detect/stop the infections. The default Windows antivirus/Antimalware was always more effective.

        • And what do you use for some of AVG's advance cleaning features, such registry cleaning and defrag, tweak settings and all that and a bunch of other awesome stuff that are not present in CCleaner?

          @Zachary:

Registry cleaning is unnecessary, and can cause problems that are hard to diagnose. Registry 'defrag' is also another invented term…

Registry entries should only be edited or removed when you have a specific issue you want to target (e.g software not working properly or unexpected behavior in Windows).

A registry cleaner removes old / deprecated entries but there's really no benefit in removing these, and sometimes you remove something you're not supposed to.
          Don't use registry cleaners.

        • @Zachary: CCleaner does do 'reg cleaning' as well as tweaking startup items etc.
Piriform, the company that do CCleaner, also do a good defrag program called Defraggler. But most machines have SSDs these days and shouldn't be defragged anyway.

        • @scrimshaw: OK, what about the live optimization feature? What about changing the login screen background on older OSs, like windows XP?

@Baysew: Thanks, will check that out…

@dheywood: It does yes, but it seems the registry cleaner in AVG's cleanup tool is more deep, for example picking up a lot more entries than what CCleaner did/missed on…if you've ever ran Ccleaner first and then AVG TuneUp right after it…

        • @Baysew: OK, not bad alternative….only thing I see missing is the tweak manager equivalent which comprises of an all in one section of various tweaks to the windows operating system and other programs…. Oh and a section where I could unlock files so that are being accessed by various processes…kinda like unlocker 1.9.2….

Though not sure how much more deep of a cleaning I would get if I were to fork out for the pro license…..

    • This is really not that different from any other free A/V out there, and it amazes the amount of money that these companies makes off uninformed people.

        It's not av

        • +1

Yea, this isn't even an AV. It's just BS 'tune-up' apps that actually do more hard than good in terms of system performance.
