All-You-Can-Eat-BBQ... Not Quite... Scoopon / Bisq

People are going to be PISSED!

I'm referring to the recent Scoopon Deal which was $20 for an 'ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT Brazilian BBQ' which 4,318 people bought. Turns out to be pretty sketchy.

I bought 10 considering it seemed like a pretty awesome deal and I was sure I could get 10 willing participants. When we arrived, we were seated and I noticed a sign on a wall directed to Scoopon Users. It stated that Scoopon users were entitled to ALL-THEY-CAN-EAT from the salad buffet, plus 1 of each of the following types of meat (the portions were pretty small). I brought the Scoopon page up on my phone just to check the Ts and C's… Nothing about it. It says "ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BRAZILIAN BBQ". So It's pretty much blatent false advertising (confirmed by the law students at our table).

I kicked up a fairly big stink about it, and after a long time, the boss ended up agreeing to honour it.

Anybody else had any experiences yet?

I think i'll be staying well away from these "voucher a day" style websites. Too many places not honouring their vouchers, or treating the customers poorly. Hate to say it, but thats why alot of them were going (financially) down the drain in the first place.

As per the situation, users should get a refund. yet another store 'imposing' after sale t&c's on the patrons.

  • +3

I suspect Scoopon will start to implode shortly with all the recent adverse publicity. They clearly need to make significant changes ……

Consumers are not going to trust the deals, and businesses are not going to want to put themselves 'in harms way' by agreeing to participate….. where it could have a detrimental effect on their business.

I bet the Brazilian BBQ is regretting it already……

    • +2

Unless scoopon tells them to honour the deal, most people will just keep quiet about the issue.

I'm not sure if it would have a "detrimental effect on their business" because i suspect alot of these places would be closing down anyway, and are hoping to get a new range of clientele to pull the business out of a hole. Well, thats my hypothesis anyway

      • +1

        Pretty sound hypothesis IMHO! ;)

      • I guess it depends where the mis-information is coming from…….
Like the spa deal a wee while back…. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/29608 the customers were treated poorly at 'front of house' by the receptionist….the ensuing details showed that management had not informed their staff properly regarding the promotion, (and did try to make amends).

In this BBQ case….is the mis-information from the restaurant management? restaurant staff?, or from the actual scoopon ad itself?

In theory, if all went well, as you say, it would be a good way of pulling a business out of a hole. New custom, perhaps re-vitalising old custom. However…. if, as in this case, it doesn't go well, it will certainly not have positive results, potentially nailing the coffin shut on what could be a good, viable business.

Accountability is also very foggy…..does the fault lie with scoopon or the individual business when things go pear shaped?

I've just had a similar experience at Bondi Smooch (frozen yoghurt).. even though my voucher was free from ouffer. I went in on sunday and asked specifically what the voucher got me (flavour wise, etc).. He said any flavour in a kiddy small cup. I said ok and he went off and got it. Then I realised the kiddy small cup is only worth $2.95 and the normal small is worth $3.95 (like it said on the ouffer voucher). I asked if I was meant to get normal small and he said “no, its only kiddy small”. I know it was free and all, but they didnt give me what the voucher said.. I cant stand people lying to me! It was nice nonetheless.. But it wouldve been nice if they acknowledged the voucher properly!
I feel ripped and i didnt even pay for the voucher.. can only imagine how you feel Bensoin :-/ At least you got what you should have in the end.. unfortunately it wasnt without a fight.

  • Not what I wanted to hear. Between myself and my friends we bought 12 vouchers to this place and we LIKE to eat. Thanks for the heads up, will print out the original page when heading over there and will bring the camera over.

I'm not familar with the setup of Bisq, do they police the buffet?

    • The buffet is only for salad… For the meat, they bring each piece of meat round to you. I definitely feel like the fault lies Ailey on the business, not scoopon. I emailed scoopon last week telling them what happened and asking if there's any chance I could refund my 2 remaining scoopons (as I don't particularly want to go back) with no reply as yet.

  • Perhaps if business don't want to honour the t&c they should be a part of scoopon in the first place. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm going to be very wary of scoopon deals.

  • Ok, that's annoying. I suggest we all email Scoopon and advise them of this until they call Bisq and sort them out.

    • +1

I brought 9 vouchers and when I found out about the dodgy deal - I spoke with Scoopon claiming false advertising. To give Scoopon credit - they responded to my e-mail quite promptly and refunded my money last week with no issues. I'm happy with this respond.

  • +1

It should be worth mentioning that there have been some very good deals too. I've been on a couple of Sydney Harbour dinner cruises thanks to Scoopon and could not have been happier with the product and service. I've also used a Scoopon voucher for Go-Karts in Perth and could not have had a better experience. It's these businesses that give customers a positive customer experience that will enjoy our return business. I have loads of relatives back in Ireland who I will not hesitate in taking on a Harbour dinner cruise the next time they come to visit. I've also raved about it to my friends and family - these are the kind of positive outcomes that the Brazilian BBQ place will miss out on.

    • I agree. It's the business's fault, not Scoopons. That said, I have asked for a refund, so whether I continue to use Scoopon or not will depend on their response.

      • Yep, definitely the business's fault.

I've used a group buy deal three times so far (Jumponit, Spreets). Shocolate in Fitzroy accepted them with no issues, in fact after their initial deal, I've seen deals posted up a couple of more times. It seems to be working well for them.

High Tech Burrito in Hawthorn, didn't want to accept 3 vouchers even though we were 3 customers paying separately but sitting at the same table. Nothing in the T&C about sitting at the same table. It's a take-away place without table service, no waiters but they do bring the food to the table in the style of the way Nandos does it. Didn't have to argue as they let it slide.

The third time was for Provenance where they happily accepted it but then didn't give me an itemized bill. There was just a total at the end. I added it up in my head at the beginning but it leaves the buyer a bit confused.

I was over at San Churro on the weekend and they had a special notice up regarding what Jumponit voucher users can buy, again it was changing the conditions of the coupon people had bought.

You only have to go as far as looking at the 7/11 deals posted here and how some people have difficulty redeeming coupons/deals because of ill informed or stingy staff/management. /rant

  • +1

    that is absolute rubbish.
If a company is going to participate in these "deals", they should at least TRY to honour a deal like this.
Even at $20 per head, they are going to make a good profit (there's only so much a person can eat). Plus markups on drinks etc is ridiculous.

Plus most people, if they have a good time, WILL come back. Leave a bad taste in their mouth (pun intended), and they will never come back and probably tell several others their story.

The truth is, there is no shortage of restaurants out there. Competition would be tight and you have to offer something different.

This Brazilian restaurant sold $85k worth of business in 24 hours, based on 1 set of T&C's. Now that the cash is in the bank, they want to change it.
I hope EVERY SINGLE PERSON who is told of this new T&Cs at this restaurant causes a huge fuss when they are there.

There's no way I'm going after reading this - http://www.eatability.com.au/au/melbourne/bisq/

I'm chasing a refund, big time.

    • Agreed, that's terrible.

      • From Scoopon's FAQs:

What about if the business I've got my Scoopon with goes belly-up or disappears in ways I can't even think of now before I get to redeem it?

If you can't redeem your Scoopon because the company can't provide the good or service we'll refund your money.

and more specifically 15.2 of T&C,

15.2. We will refund the purchase price or exchange the Scoopon voucher where we have made a mistake; for example, the Scoopon voucher we issued is not for the product that was advertised.

If Bisq can't provide what was sold then we can get a refund from Scoopon.

        • +1

I imagine the hard part is going to be getting a response from Scoopon in the first place. The only contact option appears to be email.

Might have to go on a weekday or book way ahead by the sounds of it. More crap!
I will wait to see how many buy this Favela one before I buy it. If too many buying, forget it. They really should have a cap on these things.

I bought a latin BBQ all you can eat in the rocks recently but gave it to my friends, who booked a table for 10. They had no trouble at all with restricted food or conditions. So I guess it is the company themselves who are to blame.

I also got a voucher for $1 elvis pizza and that was given to us with a smile on the waitresses face. She was very nice. I would recommend that place again

  • +2

I noticed some guy mentioned that their meet was very salty. That actually is a technique of the buffet system. If the food is salty then people drink more water and that makes you eat less. A professional chef told me this who works for a popular restaurant.

    • +1

Yes, that is kind-of correct… but I'd say that they would "prefer" that you drank something more expensive than water :-D

      • +1

Salt can also be used to preserve meat. I would be more concerned with this than it making me drink more.

  • think i'm gonna go and ask for a refund from scoopon.

been to bisq before it was pretty good due to the all you can eat…

however, seems extremely dodgy. bought seven for the whole family and partners.

    hope Scoopon honor the refund.

can any one who gets a response from scoopon or bisq keep us updated…

  • I would be interested to understand the economics of Scoopon.

I suspect when Scoopon sells a $21 all you can eat meal at the restaurant, the restaurant doesn't get the $21.

I'd be surprised if they get more than $10.50….

    • I don't know how scoopon work but i know how Offerme or was it Ouffer. Gosh there's so many you get confused. They charged about $3000 upfront to start working on a deal for you regardless weather the deal goes ahead or not. Then ontop of that they charge you about $5 per voucher.

And then there is another which charge 25% of the voucher price. So you get an idea. They are not cheap.

  • I can also confirm Churras (www.churras.com.au) refuse weekend bookings for their Ouffer deal.

I found this very annoying, particularly as I am a regular customer whether using an Ouffer or not.

    Hi Oz bargain community,

I was only just made aware of this issue being on the forum just now, First of all I would like to apologise that we had not seen this sooner to answer your questions. We spent quite alot of time yesterday with Bisq and can report back ,they have removed the "sign" and will be honouring all scoopons as originally promoted. Its is not acceptable for businesses to change the rules there after the fact and sincerely apologise for poor service. Anyone who has already visited Bisq , that has any concern or wishes to discuss a refund can contact [email protected] . Sadly the business had chosen to change the rules and regulations that are written into their agreement, and scoopon has done everything in its power to do the correct thing for its members. Please dont hesitate to let us know via [email protected] if you have any feedback after today as we will monitor this business carefully.

    Kind Regards

    Scoopon Team

Thanks, Ill keep mine for now then, I sent you an email earlier (with a link to this page) user name is the same as it is here :)

Kudos to Bensoin for raising this on Ozbargain!!!

  • I am going to Braza in Newport NSW on Saturday using my Jump On It coupon.

I am praying the experience of you guys in Melbourne is not repeated in Newport.

This is dissapointing to hear as I was planning to buy scoopon for churascaria all you can eat bbq. will not be buying now.

I will just give a +1 to the fishmongers at manly though. I bought their scoopon for $5 for $14.50 of fish and chips and service + fish was sensational. got 2 pieces of fish and a nice serve of handcut chips. very good value with the scoopon.

  • Hi Nubzy,

Just so you are aware, the two offers, are completely unrelated, two different states, businesses even the offers themselves. But it is completely up to you of course :) Glad you enjoyed your time at Bluefish, a great place to eat!

  • +1

Very true… I'll point out that I have used 6 or 7 Scoopons which were all good. This has been my first bad experience.

  • Bensoin, Completely feel for you mate,In all honestly this offer was completed by someone else here, and even I didnt know that was the case when I went there. Luckily I had my girlfriend with me, and she didnt eat all her food! But since receiving some complaints, we have gotten to the bottom of this, this guys sign is removed, and it is all you can eat!

  • +1

even after refund, getting treated poorly like that is embarassing. would never try it, scoopon should make some serious agreements with these businesses so there are big penalties for if they decide to change their rules.

  • +5

Cripto, I completely agree,we are reviewing our current contracts and will be implementing changes , unfortunately, even with the most iron clad agreements, you do sometimes get bad service. I agree though Cripto, and the feedback provided is taken very seriously.

    • +1

I don't think I would use Scoopon again though. Fine if the business is cr@p, but even after using Scoopon's website message pad and emailing them, they don't seem to reply. And there is no other way of contacting them.

      • +2

Yes, their communication isn't great. No reply here either.

        • +2

I guess Bisq has exposed Scoopon's lack of service as well.

Infallible - It's fine putting a message on Ozbargain saying 'email us if you require a refund', but then to not carry on that expectation; that's bad customer service and misleading information in itself.

This is definitely going to stop me from using COTD website as well (apparently a sister site). This is probably the standard of service I'll get if I ever need to do a warranty claim.

  • Kudos to bensoin for pointing this issue out and great work infallible!

As with many people here, I have experienced their ridiculous service and was not happy with them. Would have been happier to spend the 20 bucks on the macca's dinner deal instead, at least it makes me full.

  • +3

    Wow, this business is farked.

These bad reviews will hang around the internet forever…

    • +4

Yup - being in Flinder's Lane, they need word of mouth to survive, and Melbourne Savvy diners always look on the net to see reviews. I think they have made a fatal mistake with not honouring Scoopon deals.

  • +1

totally screwed. We should have a forum here dedicated to coupon reviews.

  • What's Scoopons contact number?

  • I was going to purchase this but missed out after the time elapsed. I am so glad I didn't purchase it in time now. This is the reason why I'm always wary of using coupons and the like. Many of the companies do it as a mean of advertising but when you make use of the coupons, they treat you like you're a cheapskate!!

I'd be so embarassed if I brought my group of friends there and then get pushed to a small 'Scoopon only corner'.

  • Very disappointed at Scoopon for this deal.

    Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately we are unable assist you with your request for refund.

Once a Scoopon has been redeemed were are no longer anle to offer a refund.

Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact us.
    We appreciate your feedback.

    Kind Regards,

    Team Scoopon

    • At least you got a reply and know where you stand.

    • If you have used it, it will be fair that they cannot refund you. If I had discovered that it is not an all you can eat BBQ, I would have not used the coupon and complain about it after.

It is retarded of the restaurant to do this to themselves. Scoupons can be great form of advertising, it encourages people to try the place if they would not otherwise.
However the food there is so bad that noone will go there scoupon or not thereafter.

  • +3

Hey Bensoin, I just realised you were the one who originally posted this deal up - so now I blame you for dragging all us Ozbargainers into it. LOL… Just kidding.

    • I was hoping nobody'd stumble upon that. Lol.

  • I asked for a refund and I haven't used the coupons yet. This was Scoopon's reply. BASICALLY NO REFUND EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T USED YOUR COUPONS.
    "

    Thank you for your email.

We have had feedback from customers advising that there was some confusion about BISQ restaurant and the terms and conditions of the Scoopon advertised. We have since been in contact with BISQ BBQ and Grill to ensure that our Scoopon customers receive the best possible service and the Scoopon is honoured in full to the advertised terms and conditions.

Our Business Manager has spoken directly to the owner of the restaurant to ensure that any confusion was cleared up and we are confident that your dining experience at BISQ restaurant will be a positive one.

Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact us.

    Kind Regards,

    Team Scoopon

    • The catch 22 here, is if I do go, and BISQ still secretly "discriminates" against Scoopon users (you need to advise you're using Scoopons before you dine in), and if I complain to Scoopon, they'll use the excuse of "Sorry, you have already used your coupon so we can't do anything about it now." In fact, I believe they have already used it on another user.

Shame Scoopon. I ask for a refund - which is reasonable considering all the feedback and you've still wiped your hands clean!

    • That was the generic response they gave everyone who emailed before the issue, now that they have sorted it out request a refund again if you still dont want to go. might get further.

  • +1

    Its pretty simple

If you haven't used your coupon, go and get what you paid for. If you have and didn't get what you paid for, demand a refund,a free offer to come back to get what you paid for or report scoopon and bisq to the department of fair trading.

It might require some effort, but everyone here should be getting what they paid for.

  • Getting refunds from scoopon are full of bulls..never gonna use scoopon anymore. Thank you for your service and I will never use u guys again.

  • I remember when i bought my first scoopon, was for Chilli padi at docklands, it promised butter chicken. when i went there, there was no butter chicken, i was directed to these take away pre-made dreads of curry, literally looked like dogs breakfast, so i demanded i wouldn't eat, that, especially since they were all spicy and i only wanted butter chicken coz it was mild. After a discussion they finally agreed to make a another meal for me which was fine. Also, i might add, the voucher advertised a can of soft drink, now presumptuous me, i would think its the 390ml cans you normally get, but somewhere they had these weird 320ml cans, and said i could only have those, which only offered coke or coke zero.

Needless to say, im very very cautious at what i buy now, most of the time none of the deals are detailed enough to buy with confidence.

My girlfriend doesn't even want to get the middle eastern banquet we bought coz the reviews lately on urban spoon have been terrible…what to do with vouchers u've already bought??

  • +2

I don't blame scoopon but rather the business that is offering the discount for pulling the rug under our, as well as scoopons feet. I really like the idea of larger buying power and giving us the ability to try new things, but, deep down, I always have a feeling that because we paid less, we will be treated to a lower standard.

    • +1

I think the blame can be shared between all three parties,

1)scoopon for attracting these clients that offer these types of deals without prior knowledge of conditions or supply of said conditions / experience within the deal
      2) the restaurant thinking this will not cost them money in the short term
      3) the buyer thinking there is no risk to getting a bargains

      • +2

there should be no risk, if the deal/voucher says it's all you can eat, it should be. if the voucher says you get to have the butter chicken it should be. I don't see how we should assume there is a risk to it, its in the terms and conditions. It's prolly legally binding too.

      • +1

Mate I usually agree with you, but 3) I shouldn't have to go in thinking there is a risk for getting what i paid for…

that to me means that your dealing with a dishonest company.

        • Okay see what you mean in retrospect :)

    • +4

Bit of topic but i remember when our local pizza shop had 2 for 1 been going there for years and we ordered 2 pizza's handed over the coupon and got our 2 pizza's back with considerable less topping, wasnt too happy. next time we just rang up and ordered 2 pizza's (without mentioning the coupon), dude wasnt happy when i showed the coupon, but serves them right, none the less, the pizza's were back to normal.

      • +3

Yup, I never advertise I have any kind of coupon til it comes time to pay, ever! When they whinge I ask the same question of them, "What would knowing I had a coupon, have changed about the service you delivered?"

They can't really answer without making themselves look bad! ;)

        • +2

fully agree with you both, however it was one of the terms that you have to let them know… (guess they can say so they don't accept to many coupons on the same night, specially if people with coupons are being subsidized by those without.)

          • @wisc: Just give them the old "oh yeah, I'm sure I told the girl who took the booking…I think her name was Jessica, or Emma, uh something like that!" :p

However, as Cloudy rightly points out, if they ask you directly it's pretty hard to lie, so then you've gotta cop it sweet! This has never happened to me though, I've never had a restaurant specifically ask at booking time about coupons!

I probably wouldn't ever use a scoopon, it looked like a sketchy proposition from the outset; and all the negative feedback has reinforced that suspicion IMHO! Sorry scoopon, just being honest! ;)

        • When i called up blueroom for a booking, i asked for a table of 4. The person specifically asked scoopon or not? (i had not mention the scoopon at all), i said, scoopon. Then she said, there is no more room for scoopon clients tonight. Would u like to book another day.

Clearly what is happening is that this place( i suspect others too) is only giving a percentage of their floor for scoopon, and if i went without telling them i'd be in breach of the terms myself. kinda catch 22…

I have to say, its understandable they can only give a % of their table for vouchers, since they dont want to tell their full paying clients they are full.

      Too little too late.
what about all the people who have used the scoopon and left unsatisfied ?

      • +1

Agreed. They should be offering a no quibble refund to any unused coupons due to the problems so far and a replacement coupon to any who have already had a bad experience as this restaurant.

I don't accept the argument that this is all the restaurant's fault. Its up to scoopon to ensure the deal is understood by the vendor and that they are following through. And this should be up front, not after an avalanche of public complaints forces them to.

I have looked at scoopons before and considered them though have never actually taken the plunge. Given this episode there's no way I would ever consider buying one now.

        I'm sure I'm not alone.

      • Agreed
        Let it be known people
        scoopon and Bisq.. fail
everyone should link this forum in every forum u every post
give these guys are bad name

        SPREAD THE WORD!
see the power of oz bargain!

they sue oz bargain for free advertising
we use oz bargain to stink up their names!

        • hmmmm….cutting off our nose to spite our face??

if they are able to tidy this up, then we will potentially all benefit from being able to buy cheaper services……

        • There's no need to be anywhere near that proactive in sabotaging any business. Dodgy service providers will sink entirely of their own accord under the weight of their own poor service & business practices!

If they fix things up & get on with it, they might just survive to gain a loyal customer base; if they don't, they'll just go the way of the dodo! ;)

        • That is actually funny, the whole premise of these websites is to use the power of the internet and "spreading the word" to promote a business, but this just shows and should show it can spread bad businesses too. The knife cuts both ways, business (like scoopon and the restaurant) needs to remember this.

  • +2

Ahh love my entertainment book :) never get treated like a second class citizen ! but pay like one.

    • Yup, agreed; probably the best $60 I spend all year! :)

Well, got my Scoopon refund, so that ended fairly well (I hadn't used the vouchers yet).

    • nice thanks for the feedback,
I'm going to hold onto mine and see how they go. very doubtful we'll get as good a service as we got last time, but if thats the case i wont be going back and defiantly wont be recommending them…
they will only be hurting themselves…(best advertising a business can get is word of mouth and to be made a regular)

  • I've never read such bad reviews, and they just keep coming:
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/760201/restaurant/Victoria/CB…

Even though Scoopon are trying to fix the problem, I just don't see how it will change from being 'a bitter disappointment' to something you'd be satisfied paying $20 for.

    • They're not fixing the problem - fixing the problem would be refunding everyone the coupon, used or not and taking Bisq up to task for it.

they're merely doing damage control, and not doing a particularly good job at it.

10: remember to turn caps lock off

    • did u just sign up to make this comment?

      • Does that affect his credibility?

        • It could be a puppet account. But regardless, the caps threw me off. I don't blame scoopon, rather the restaurant. I feel bad for the bargain hunters who bought into the deal, only to have bisq do a quick switch.

    Hey Guys,

Just checking in again. Obviously, we're still getting some posts on here saying that there are issues. Honestly, we have not had any negative feedback coming through to our Support Team regarding BISQ's service and what food was provided for our Scoopon customers since our Sales Manager has spoken to Bisq and cleared up those issues.

We appreciate that OzBargain is a great way to inform others of your positive, and in this case negative, experiences to spread the word to other users. We have no issue with people doing that at all, but we would also like to have you email us via [email protected] if you've got questions that our support will be able to help you answer in a timely fashion.

Of course we would prefer to make this situation into as much of a positive as possible, so we are encouraging our customers to give BISQ a go as they have been doing a great job recently. You may notice that no one has made a complaint regarding the service or food since the 18th of October in this forum.

However, if you are still unsure - we encourage you to contact our support team via [email protected] so we can assist you further.

    Cheers.

    • Thats all fine and good, but doesn't address the problem of the people who used the scoopon when bisq was still fked up. Wouldn't be suprised if 1/2 of the 4328 people who bought into the deal already used their scoopons to disappointing results.

Lots of bad reviews to sully the name of Bisq in any case, they brought it upon themselves.

Scoopon just shot itself in the foot BIG TIME by now refusing to refund whether you have used the voucher or not.

I can't believe they had the gall to come on here and offer refunds (vouchers used or not) and are now backing out of that commitment.

    F U Scoopon….

I think thats a bit harsh, not really scoopons fault, the restaurant was dodge, now scoopon is paying for it and trying to assist.
that said, I could see how you would be upset if you used the coupons and not got the service you expected and paid for though. should be bisq making it up though.

scoopon rep has come here trying to assist but they are pretty much the middle man seems they have already applied pressure on bisq as well so gotta respect them for that.

    • come on here and offer refunds (vouchers used or not)
      backing out of that commitment.

Try as I might, I cannot find that offer anywhere……

They have no reason to offer refunds on unused vouchers…..The restaurant is now apparently fulfilling it's obligation, so people are getting what they paid for.

    Hey GreatWhiteHunter -

Just to clarify, we have not stated that we will refuse refund requests point blank at all.

We have asked anyone who has any queries to contact us so we can assist them with any questions they have.

    Thanks.

    • No, you might not have refused my 2nd request for a refund.
      However, you have ignored it.

I hope the ACCC takes action against Scoopon for being in cahoots with Bisq.
Yes, I do think Scoopon should be held responsible for inaction against Bisq for Customers who went BEFORE they were given a talking to.
