  • Had to access the site to find out where OOL is, guessing AKL is Aukland? gave up when i looked at the size of the list…

    • Gold Coast buddy

      • Coolangatta to be exact

They are universally used airport codes. Good chances if you don't know atleast one end of the flight you don't need it :D

  • One way. This price has been there for a long time. They just don't advertise it.

  • Just bought a 1 way Phnom Pehn to gold coast $208 + 1 seat pick PNH to KUL $14= $222 AUD didn't get paypal option so put it card charged me $181 USD ended up $241 AUD which ends up $191 USD after Citi bank conversion fees…. auggghhhh
Still cheap for 11 hrs of pain Thanks OP

    • You don't get the Paypal option for flights originating overseas. But u do for one way or return bookings originating in Aus. Paypal would have charged you an exchange rate commission anyway if they had have been acceptable. As stated many times on Ozb, Citibank Plus will avoid the skimming/fees on exchange rates.

  • Anyone care to offer an informed opinion on AirAsia? Is service similar to Jetstar, for example?

Food on AA much better/cheaper, buy a row 1 seat for extra comfort & priority boarding… I was a huge fan of AA until they put one in the sea!

AA fan here. Reasonable food at reasonable price. IMHO as good as, or better than Cebu Pacific/Vietnam Airlines/Jetstar. Just have to be patient in waiting for their sales, and book 12 months plus in advance for great value.

      • Thank you Peck. However, after adding the cost of 20kg luggage and meal(s), a quick comparison with a full-service airline showed surprisingly little difference in cost for a Melbourne to Bangkok flight.

Completely agreed with the cheap/good food. Don't order any terrible western food (e.g. big breakfast), and go for the asian rice/curry/meat dishes and you'll be good. The downsides are having to walk a bit longer to get to your plane at Sydney airport, the perceived safety issues, as well as the stopover in KL.

For AirAsia, you can use optiontown for 1-2 empty seats for example, or upgrade in flight to a hotseat or quiet zone for a reasonable fee. Even though the pitch/width is slightly less than certain full service, you can use money saved to upgrade. You'll have more space than Qantas/Virgin econ and a row to yourself.

Pay with poli = AirAsia Mel - BKK with luggage can be had under $380. Only a $200 saving per passenger compared to a full service, but if you have a partner that's already $400. In BKK or Malaysia that might mean all your nights are upgraded to a 5 star hotel with executive lounge.

In comparison to full service airlines, the trick is to book when there is AirAsia mega sale, Jetstar Birthday/2 for 1/International sale or once or twice yearly Scoot Birthday/Super Sale. If you're booking just anytime like now (only an average sale), you won't get good value. You will know its a mega sale when flights to KL are $250 return or for Jetstar around that range for BKK return (without luggage).

However, AirAsia to BKK is not an ideal route. The stopover at KL and extra flight is quite an inconvenience.

Can also wait for Qantas BKK sales which are $599, upsides are perceived safety, non stop flight etc.

For low cost carrier departing Mel I'd prefer Jetstar on sale for this route. The stopovers on Scoot (Singapore overnight) and AirAsia (KL) are only good if you don't mind Singapore, or the extra few hours with the AirAsia.

So it really depends, would you rather rough it for a little saving and then spend it when you're there, or enjoy the less stress of a direct flight. Personally I'd choose the rough option and would probably fly Jetstar in your situation

        • @takutox:
Thank you takutox for a very informative reply.

@takutox: I dont know about from Melbourne, but from Sydney Stop Over KL Syd-DMK(Bangkok) will vary depending on the season. About 1.5 hours (Not bad) or about 3.5 hours (Not good). They won't give you shorter stopovers due the knock on affect of a late flight. Coming back it can be as little as 1.7 hours.
If you pay with poli pay I assume that you cannot get free travel insurance. I pay with paypal using my citibank signature card. (I have confirmed with them that paying via paypal will still activate travel insurance, and can be a one way booking)
We MUST be due for another AA sale. TO my recollection always starts around 2 am on a Sunday Sydney times. (I am already booked up until Aug 2018 :))

        • @Peck:

Yep from Sydney, Jetstar is out of the question. You have to stopover at Mel first. AirAsia is clear winner in food, price and convenience.

AirAsia is definitely a better option for Sydney siders, while Jetstars' direct flight is more convenient for Mel (imo).

For around the same price, I'd rather arrive 7PM at BKK (9.5 hour flight) and check in hotel then fuss around waiting in KL airport then arrive 10PM.

And true, PayPal and link is the way to go if wanting travel insurance on CC.

edit: to the guy following my profile and negging all my posts, LOL. show me where i touched you on the doll

        • @takutox: Wow you are being stalked! Maybe a Mod. can id and 'out' the suspect! :) Especially if they are not adding a comment of an opposing viewpoint.

  • Couldn't help myself got winter sorted OOL return Cambodia july august $428 AUD no seat or extras but short layover times I'll sort the seats out closer to the time.
Makes getting back to work easier knowing you already have another holiday booked when you get back from your other holiday.
