Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky 12YO $169.99, Hakushu Single Malt Whisky 12YO $139.99 @ Costco Moorabbin VIC (Membership Required)

550

I saw this whisky when doing groceries at Costco Moorabbin yesterday. It is about $10 cheaper than Dan Murphy's which selling at $179.

The only catch is, you need to be a Costco Member to buy.

Hakushu Single Malt Whisky 12YO for $139.99 @ Costco Moorabbin (Membership Required)

I saw this whisky when doing groceries at Costco Moorabbin yesterday. It is about $40 cheaper than Dan Murphy's which selling at $179.99.

The only catch is, you need to be a Costco Member to buy.

Being a big fan of Japanese Whiskies, this is a good bargain in Australia so far. Of course we can't compare the price in Japan. After all we are paying alcohol tax dearly here in Australia.

  • Never tried Japanese whiskey, what's this like compared to scotch?

    • +1

Delicious, I find them easier to drink. I love most Japanese ones.

      • I find the opposite haha. Shows how personal whisky is.

    • +1

I find some to be smooth, but mostly a bit harsh. If you like the big bit of alcohol then Japanese is the way to go. If you like your islay or Speyside then wouldn't bother trying. Perhaps try at a bar.

    • +3

Yes, I must agree with @The 10th Doctor.

I have found that a Japanese whisky is easier to drink and less or even no smoky taste at all.

It is also smooth, and it does not burn your throat.

I love the Yamazaki Single Malt 12YO..I was lucky to buy it a while ago (4+ years) when it was only $100 for the bottle and even then I wondered if I was spending too much..Now I'm glad I did..haha.

I don't like Japanese blended whiskey like Nikka from the Barrel..I find that really rough to drink.

      • +1

Yeah I was trying to remember how much I paid back then and $100 sounds right. Crazy how much prices have risen since then. Even back then people were saying that these Japanese whiskeys were overpriced because the prices you could get in Japanese airports were way lower. Nowadays, they're out of stock in Japan and even more expensive here.

It was a good buy for $100, but for $160… eh I'd spend my money elsewhere.

      • +1

Try mixing it with cold water to reduce the alcohol level. It is in fact 51.4% … drinking straight is tough.

        • Thanks, already tried that ages ago that and it still didn't agree with me as I don't like blended whiskeys..It's not just Nikka that I don't enjoy that was blended.

    • +1

I burped ice cream flavour for at least an hour after drinking yamazaki

    • +1

The two in this deal are very nice, my #1 whisky at the moment is either Hakushu or Miyagikyo (can't decide!). Yamazaki is also nice but for me the previous two are awesome and very smooth Single Malts.

For reference, I also enjoy, for example; Lagavulin (16), Glenfiddich (aged & non), JW Gold / Green, Laphroaig currently drinking Chivas Regal 18 YO from this deal in 2013!! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121833

    • +2

Some Japanese whiskey is really good (internationally acclaimed), some is terrible (think $10 for 2L bottle). The problem is that here in Aus, the prices are ridiculous.. especially now that Japanese whiskey has gotten more popular. As an example, I was in Japan in 2014 and the Hakushu 12YO & Yamazaki 12YO ($140 & $170 as above) could be gotten for about $50 & $70 respectively iirc.

I'm kicking myself for not getting the Hibiki 12YO. $210 from Dan Murphy, but the cheapest I saw it over there was <$100

      • I drink my Yamazaki and Hibiki from Japan very sparingly these days. They were the same prices you stated above when I got them but I really don't want to have to replace them now.

      • +1

It's not just "here in Aus"

The prices also went up quite a lot in Japan, as many of us Ozb's regularly travel there and note that it went up towards the end of 2015.

You won't get the same old prices in most places in Japan, as what you could get in 2015 and prior.

        • damn… Good for them I guess!

    • I prefer Islay and Island (Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 10 and Quarter Cask, Talisker 10); my friend prefers Highland and Speyside. Even so, we both like most of the reputable single malts from most regions (I enjoy Glenfarclas 105, several Dalmores, some Glenmorangies, some Macallans, don't mind Aberlour, Cardhu and some Juras, and particularly like Bowmore 12 and Highland Park 12).

So my friend bought a bottle of Hakushu 12 on the basis of all the hype. We both voted it, by a long way, the worst out of our collections. Whisky is a personal taste, sure, but I am perplexed as to why this is so popular. If you have not previously tried, do so before buying a bottle (though some bars charge $40 a dram for it - absurd!). Reviews of it vary so widely (sometimes smoky, sometimes light and sweet, sometimes fruity, sometimes bitter) and some descriptions note that the taste is dependent on the batch. Perhaps my mate bought one from a bad batch… I won't risk it.

Although I won't vote down - it may be the cheapest it's available for - I do not consider this a $140 or even a $60 bottle. I'd rather any of about 30 other specials available at the moment for under $80.

      A $10 saving on a $180 item is not a bargain

If 180 monkeys post 10 times are they any smarter?

      -edit
Posted before the merging of threads. Still don't know how you'd disagree with me tho

You don't get it do you? What is a $10 discount to you?

I'll upvote the deal to make up those that are more challenged.

      • +1

I don't think I've ever seen a deal with a ~5% saving off RRP get any real kudos. A neg may have been a little hasty but this is not a front page deal.

Do you even know what is a front page deal? Something that has received over 25 votes so the users believe that is worthy of a front page view. If you hadn't have negged this deal it probably wouldn't have received 25 votes!

          @Maverick-au:
You can get front page with less than 25, but thanks for the heads up. Still not a bargain.

    • A $10 saving on a $180 item is not a bargain

Must be a slow deal day for this to finish up on the front page. You could buy it for almost the same price using discounted wish cards via cashrewards.

Is there any at Lidcombe costco?

  • if only they sold liquor in the Adelaide store ;(

  • Has anyone tried to price match Costco price at DM?

    • Would also like to hear some anecdotes. I would say that Dan's would not match, as the only way you could provide proof of price is a photo of a Costco shelf or if the price is on the special "coupon" flyers.

    • +1

Dan Murphys beat Costco prices for me regularly. They said the store is supposed to be within 10 kilometres but they don't mind. I have never been knocked back for a price at Dan Murphys.

  • I've always wanted to try this

    A Costco membership is $60

So this is actually $229.99 and $199.99

    • It's for those who already have a costco membership.
I've got one and it's very much worth it

    • If you cancel your Costco membership within 12 months of getting it, you can get your $60 back, but you then get banned from getting membership again for I think 12 months.

For relaxing times, make it Suntory Time.

  • Kinda still expensive… Only just because I bought a lot of whiskey from Japan recently. :)

    • I'm going to Japan in a few weeks - are the prices really good or just average?

As a comparison, how much in AUD is a bottle of Yamazaki 12 YO, Chita or Hibiki 12 YO?

I have a lot of Japanese Whisky already so will only be buying if the prices are really good or they're bottles you can't really find here.

      • If you can check out airport prices before hand, a lot of large department stores will have comparable or cheaper prices. I got mine from Don Quijote in Asakusa and it was slightly cheaper than the airport. Absolute bargain compared to back here.

      • Average to poor from what I remember (8 yrs ago).

      • +2

yamazaki 12 Y16,000 (if you can find it)
        Chita Y4000
Hibiki 12yo - Good luck finding it :)
        Hibiki Harmony - Y5000

        • Thanks Swxfty, this is very helpful.

Is the Chita you're referring to, the single grain and only 4000 yen? If so, I'll be buying a few bottles of that… the cheapest I've seen it here in Australia (and duty free in other countries) is around the $150 aud mark?

Regarding the Hibiki 12, had it many years ago when it was dirt cheap and relatively unknown - I know it's going to be hard to find!

I recently bought a Yamazki 12 YO at celebrations in Daylesford for $150, thought that was a bargain - but at those price points I think I'll pass if I come across it.

Looking forward to getting some more interesting whiskies (at hopefully better prices)

        • @mjf: yep that's the one.

You won't find hibiki 12,there's basically no more stock. You'd have better chance buying 17 yo.

        • Suntory Chita is currently sold at most international airports in Australia for $75.00.

I haven't seen any liquor stores (except the DF) who sell The Chita Whisky.

      • +2

The big problem is availability. There's a lot of demand for Japanese whisky, single malts in particular. The Yamazaki 12 here, for example, was an $80-90 bottle only a few years ago.

The big department stores are good but won't be the cheapest. Probably best becoming familiar with the bottles that are available here or in the duty free and then buying something over there which is considerably cheaper than what you'd pay here, OR get something you can't buy here.

The other thing worth doing is looking in the smaller stores. You might get lucky and find something rare or cheap that has been overlooked but even in the convenience stores you can buy small 180mL bottles of hakushu or yamazaki for 1000-1200Y which are great value to drink while you're in the country.

Also, whisky by the glass in a lot of bars is relatively cheap compared to what you'd pay at home. Not necessarily everywhere, but I recall paying $4-6 for glasses which would have cost $25 back home.

      • Well, comparing to now in australia and availability, really good, but average for other countries.

I recommend going to smaller stores, most of the smaller stores didn't have tax free either, however I scored 2 bottles of Bruichladdich's Octomore 6.3 (Smokiest whiskey in the world) for 350 a bottle! Kept one for myself and sold the other one in Australia for just under 500.

Then got the rest of my family to carry the rest of the whiskey, ranging from the cheaper end of nikka to 18YO yamazaki.

  • How much would this be at the airport duty free?

    • its not at the airport.

  • This is a good price. Japanese whisky being sold in Japan has recently seen huge price increases and you are now unlikely to get the 12 year for this price even there.

    • Yamazaki 12 is currently ¥14770 at Amazon Japan which exchanges to $170 AUD so yeh this is a great price.

"The only catch is, you need to be a Costco Membership to buy."

I am a member, but not a membership. Can I still purchase?

Downvote all you want, OP edited the post after reading this. Something something can't take constructive criticism.

  • Got a bottle of Hibiki for US$55 in one of the department stores in Osaka last year. Amazing whiskey for the price.

  • its about the same price in japan now for 12yo.

    source: I just came back.

going to japan next month… looking to stock up on some hibiki, but word is that it's hard to find.

last trip in 2015, came back with a couple of bottles of hibiki 12yr old and a hibiki 17yr old fuji bottle exclusive. cost was 60 and 110 aud respectively

just found out the 17yr old fuji bottle is worth 1k+. Gave it to the father in law then, who has since drunk the contents and filled the bottle with tea…

    • you will find hibiki harmony everywhere
hibiki 12 year old you wont find anywhere
hibiki 17 you can find if you look hard enough (Y13,000 - Y14,000)
hibiki 21 you probably also wont find.

      • My dad bought the limited edition hibiki 17yo for around 250bucks right after it launched, it now goes for 48000 yen even in japan (Over 500!) if you can find it.

Luckily i've owned the normal editions before the drought.

    • I quite liked the Hibiki Masters Select which should be relatively easily obtainable

  • theres like 3 costcos in Melbourne and 50 Dan Murphys. Even if I had membership it's no slam dunk I wanna drive 30 mins to nearest Costco and go thru the process of finding it in the warehouse and getting it.

  • Thanks.

    BONSAI!

Found a yamazaki 12 yo by chance in a random small bottle shop in mt gravatt last week for 170, too bad only one bottle left. Asked the owner to look for another one but no luck so far.

  • +1

Hakushu 12 is the better value. I think it's superior in taste to the yamazaki 12.slight peat, fruity, awesome flavour. Not spicy at all. Yamazaki was very sharp.

    • +1

Hakushu 12 is the better value

      Agree 100%

The cheaper one is definitely better, I know this is opinion/subjective, but have had both and Hakushu wins hands down.

    • +2

Agree. Hakushu 12 is the better whisky imo.

  • Great whisky. Better when it was $99 from Dan. The current $180+ price is too much.

  • I bought a Yamazaki 25 last week, hibiki 30 the week before all from Japan. There is a Yamazaki 50 believe it or not but that's over 100k AUD

Getting hibiki 12/17/21, Yamazaki 12/18 and hakushu 12/18 dead easy if you know how,

Getting it at wholesale price too, but it's true retail shops in Japan many have no stock, have to go to specialist stores

Let your fingers do the walking Kakaku.com or Japan Amazon, Japan Amazon is your best bet but they won't post it abroad, so you need a local address some shops will send to a convenience store in Japan and you can collect from there, usually it's next day deliver too for travellers on a tight schedule.

    • DAMN!!! thats expensive stuff you bought there, i just got back myself and got the hakushu 25, hakushu 18 and yamazaki 18 (limited edition bottles) and hibiki 21 (limited edition mt fuji one).

did you get all of them via the websites you mentioned? i actually went to the distilleries to get the hakushu 25 and the other 3 were all available at the airport!

I have tried all the yamazaki 25, hakushu 25 and hibiki 30 (at the yamazaki distillery) and ive found the hakushu 25 to be the best tasting!

    • Raheen - Sorry but I disagree about finding them for wholesale price

I've spoken to numerous bar owners in Japan, even they have a hard time finding them and sometimes have to purchase from yahoo auctions Japan

  • +1

I get other ways which foreigners are typically precluded from so I didn't mention

I used to live there and can read and write enough to get the deal done, having a local address, bank account is neccesary also.

My best purchases to date have been a karuizawa 1967 and saburomaru 50/55 year old
