Nice prices. Totally recommend grabbing some nice whiskey if you ever visit Japan. For comparisons sake I paid ~$35AUD for the Yamazaki Distillers Reserve. In hindsight I should have grabbed some even nicer stuff but hey. It was great.

    • Where & when was that?
Yamazaki Distillers Reserve should be available at good price on distillery tour, near Osaka. Will try tour next trip.

Back again weeks ago & didn't see a price like that. Prices skyrocketed end of 2015.
eg Nikka Shock - shake up in Japanese whisky producers due to little interest years ago & massive interest now, leading to shortages & price rises.

      • End of 2015. At some bottle-o in Kyoto

        • +1

          It's not the same now:-(
And probably poorer exchange rates now.

Posted about the whisky while there in May - led to discussion on Japanese Whisky.

Was in more remote area so prices were probably higher than in big cities.

        • @Infidel:

You can get a Yamazaki Reserve for 4500 Yen from 7/11. I was at Hokkaido at the end of 2016. The exchange rate compared to 2015 will naturally make it more expensive marginally.

Went to the Nikka distillery at Miyagikyo earlier this year and a got at 700ml bottle of that stuff for about $35.
Bought a bottle of Yamazaki Single Malt 180mL at the convenience store for approx $13 as well.

Tried to get my hands on some Hibiki at the airport on the way home but there was nothing under $120!! Nikka was $40 or so though. I asked the shopkeeper and there's way too much demand apparently, and I saw a bunch of other tourists come in and snap that Hibiki up. Not really sure I'd pay that much for no age statement whiskey personally! Prices getting way too ridiculous!

Japanese don't buy from Duty Free when leaving Japan, there is little tax & more competition at supermarkets etc. So not so much choice at airports.

Japanese I've met tend to think Japan is expensive for alcohol & tobacco, so will buy in next country cheaper - welcome to Australia!

Saw those tiny bottles of Yamazaki Single Malt at supermarkets. In a country town the 700ml of those were 4100¥ (around $50) & Miyagikyo a bit dearer in May.

Nikka distillery at Miyagikyo is on my list to visit. Brought some back.

        • @Infidel:
You are definitely right about stuff being cheaper at the supermarket. Just had to buy at duty free to get around that pesky check in weight limit haha!

The small bottles definitely were a bit pricier than the big ones but I just wanted to try before comitting. Didn't want to buy a big bottle that I wasn't sure I'd like and have to drink the whole thing by myself in week!

Miyagikyo is beautiful, but is a weird place in the middle of nowhere. The whole place just had this deliciouis smell of of mash and my mouth was watering the whole time I was there. Quite worth it just to go there for the free samples! I'm pretty keen for Yoichi next time!

        • +1

          @azz:
I only travel with carry on bag. That presented a problem bringing any liquid back. I knew duty free store would be waste of time (plus must buy more than 1 hour before).

So transferred the supermarket bought Miyagikyo bottle to washed 100ml plastic bottles (from Daiso) & put in plastic bag for security check. (Had some to sample too.) No questions asked - it's Japan. Seems to taste the same.

Jetstar has never weight checked my carry-on bag in Japan, or anywhere. Was there for 4 weeks in Spring, so 7kg was plenty.

I didn't buy the small bottles of Yamazaki Single Malt because it wouldn't last long enough.

          Thanks.
Miyagikyo - my mouth is watering already ;-)

    • I've heard this a lot, I just want someone to import some of the good stuff over and change a fee not the prices we get slugged.

      • Major tax difference between Japan and Oz doesn't help.

    • I actually bought a really expensive bottle by mistake in Japan as I got the conversion wrong.
When we were at the distillery I got the Hibiki 21 year old for around 30,000 yen which works out to be around $300AUD.

Best news about this is that due to it being a low yield whisky I can sell that in Australia for around $1000AUD.

I'm more of a beer drinker here, but am kind of interested in getting into to the Whiskey game. As for Japanese Whiskey, what's the best way to enjoy it? Do you need to mix it with something? If anyone could share some tips and tricks I'd appreciate it a lot!

    • +1

Many reviews recommended just with a tiny amount of water. Plenty of advice about what to try & how online.

    • +3

I add a tiny bit of ice but usually let it sit for a while. I like a colder temperature.

    • beer drinker here too, I prefer my whiskies neat

    • I normally drink Yamazaki 12/18 straight or with ice but dilute some of the others. eg. Nikka. (note the high % ABV on that one). Compared to its aged brethren, Hibiki Harmony is absolutely terrible. There's no way I'd do that straight.

When we toured the Yamazaki Distillery in Japan, they served them all (Hibiki/Yamazaki/Hakushu) as highballs (mixed with a fairly tall glass with Soda water) which can be a good gateway. Certainly nice in summer.

    • Coke. It tastes even better if you can get some Yamazaki 18 and mix that with ginger beer, but if go for Coke with any of these. Yet the new sugarless Coke

      • +5

don't recommend coke or anything else that has a taste of its own, the reason is, it'll basically override the taste of the whiskey so you can't truly appreciate it

        • +4

          He's obviously joking.

    • To be honest i wouldn't try Japanese whisky as a starting point. It's a bit rougher i find. For a gentle cheap beginning, but still extremely tasty, jura superstition. For flavour amrut portonova (let it oxidise well.. Take care to open and close the bottle each day for a couple weeks else it'll taste like medicine). Caol ila worth considering. Limeburners solera cask. It's all taste dependent but start simple with the jura, it's the best drop anywhere near it's price

Consider going to a whisky event to work out what you kind of flavours you like

    My… my credit card

      RIP

  • Japanese Whiskey - sounds funny)

    • +3

maybe that's because it's usually referred to as Japanese Whisky ;-)

  • That doesn't look like a $75 bottle. Are they cheap in Japan?

    • Dirt cheap

    • It was about $20 our money when I grabbed mine in Japan back in March. Its 500mls though buts its 50% alcohol. I haven't tried it yet.

      • +1

$20 for Nikka from the barrel in Japan? Where? I run a bar in Tokyo and it's more pushing $30 and has been for past year

        • +3

Also paid under $30 for Nikka from the Barrel (51% abv) in April this year.
Wasn't even shopping around, just went to the largest supermarket nearby in Tokyo the day before departure.

Other prices for reference and others wondering what some of these cost in Japan:

Certainly shows most of the prices here are taxes and or luxury premium, certainly not representative of prices in Japan.

        • @webbj:

Did you actually see the Hikibi 21 or Yamazaki 18? I couldn't find any Yamazaki 18 when I was in Tokyo earlier in the year.

I bought a bottle of Hibiki 21 for about JPY 24,000.

        • @webbj:

Yep that's more like it, around 2500jpy including tax which is pushing $30 ;)

The best places to buy cheap aged Japanese whiskey is the little alcohol shops off the beaten track, usually run by an old Japanese couple. I have been lucky a few times and found 18yr and 21yrs at 3 years ago prices as they just haven't turned over the stock or bothered to check

        • @Zerosignal:
Prices shown in second last photo.

Prices are plus tax, smaller blue print shows price including 8% tax.

        • @Infidel:

Yeah I saw that but lots of time I saw signage but no actual product.

        • @Zerosignal:
Same as in the photo… Noticed that.

        • Yamaya Shinjuku I believe. The price was 2130yen with no tax so more like 24ish.

      • Was there in April, $30 for nikka from the barrel was standard

  • +1

Keep in mind that the Nikka is 500ml

  • Which one is best to mix with coke

    • Imo hibiki is good with Coke
Yamakazi on the rocks though is awesome

  • The Yamazaki DR is a tasty smooth drop

  • +1

"For relaxing times, make it Suntory time."

    Damn, no Suntory

  • +6

No such thing as Japanese Whiskey, only Japanese Whisky

  • +2

This lessens the bite of the cost. Thanks OP!

  • +3

I remember the days when Yamazaki was a $100. The double in price makes me sad

    • +1

If you drink enough you'll forget that and be half again

  • +2

Amazes me how much Japanese Whisky has gone up in price. It used to be great value for money, and although it is still fantastic stuff it is hard to justify at more than double the price for the same product.

    • +2

link above to article - supply of older barrels (laid down when there was not a high regard for Japanese Whisky, so not much produced) could not keep up with current popularity & demand. Prices skyrocketed.

      • Yeap - I understand why it happened. Used to be great value for money product, now it is relatively not so great. $250 for 12 year old Yamazaki gives you a lot of spending money for Scotch.

  • +2

I can't speak Japanese, will it still get me drunk ?

    • +1

      Berhenti with your jokes

    • +2

If you are talking to it then you probably are already drunk!

  • "Delivery orders to a restricted post code in Australia will be not be processed due to current legislation and a full refund will be posted if required"

Probs can't order to parts of NT.

  • +5

It is a very warm and good feeling, sipping Japanese whisky while watching your eneloops charging.
Best way to spend Friday night.

    • I wish I could +50 this. Such a zen scene you paint

  • Hands up anyone remembers back in the day when Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve ozbargained at $70 at Dan Murphy

    • Hand up - lovely drop

  • +1

I have a bottle of Suntory in the cupboard so I can exclaim in a Japanese accent 'Suntory time' as I'm pouring a drink. Sure, it tastes unique, but there's a huge range of scotch whiskies for the times I want something better.

    • Suntory make a huge range of whisky, from $10 bottles to $1000s, so having a range of Scotch for something better might mean you just have a cheapy (though they are still generally ace value) ;)

      • It's the one that was $40 at Dans the other week. It is unique enough that I may look into their better stuff in time.

  • I wish this was posted in the alcohol section. I keep missing these good deals :(.

    • damn, that's my bad, I had no idea there was a dedicated Alcohl section so just posted it in Groceries.

      • That's okay wasnt having a go! I just have the alcohol tab saved to my favourites but occasionally I'll check the groceries one just in case but I'm always too late haha.
