    • Interesting… 🤔

Tl;Dr - connoisseur has reduced their cream content by approx 28%

        • +9

Explains why I'm not getting fat on these anymore.

        • +1

          And added guar gum

        • That article makes some claims… but I'm not sure they're true?

I checked three flavours, plain, cookies and cream, and macadamia, and the ingredients list has not changed since 2023. Assuming Coles' website is accurate, which I've found it has been.

@rkbrange: Going straight to the archive for the Connoisseur website instead (I'm just looking at Vanilla), and the figure of 26% is already true for October 2023 as you've found. However it definitely says the amount was 34% in March of the same year (same figure for both 1 Mar and 25 Mar), so the decrease happened sometime after then.

The article says the comparison was over a 15 month period on the Woolies website though, and so to test that, we can indeed confirm that as of 7/7/24, Woolies still showed 36% (not 34%).

This is doubly interesting then because yes, the ABC investigation was relying on faulty information from the Woolies website, both in terms of the timing and the original amount (34% vs 36%). However a decrease did happen, and so unluckily for Peters, Woolies tardiness "accidentally" got them caught. If not for that, it would have fallen outside the 15 month scope of this study.

EDIT: Cafe Grande has the same timeframe for the change as Vanilla. However for both Caramel Honey Macadamia and Cookies and Cream, the change was between 3 Nov 2022 and 22 Feb 2023, so around six months earlier.

Furthermore, the ABC article (and thus presumably Woolies, I didn't check) overstated the amount of cream by 2% for all except Cookies and Cream, which was shown correctly. Was than an even earlier reduction in the percentage? We can't know because as of the earliest webpage snapshots available in 2021, the numbers showed no further change Presumably the product URLs were different before then. They could probably be hunted down though by someone more dedicated than me.

This would explain why the vanilla tub I purchased a few weeks ago tasted completely different (in a bad way). I thought it may have just gone off somehow, or might've melted and refrozen. Will not be buying again.

After trying the new Bulla range I can’t go back to Connoisseur. They also go down to $6 pretty regularly.

    • +2

IMO Bulla > than all when it comes to flavour, texture and price (i.e. only when half-price) combined

    • +1

Might have to switch to Bulla on that recommendation

The Connoisseur Cafe Grande is not what it used to be

      • Try the new Pistachio Raspberry and Salted Caramel Speculoos, they won’t satisfy the coffee craving but they’re delicious!

    • Which bulla range?

      • +1

Bulla Murray St, it’s Bulla’s premium 1L tubs. Visually similar to Connoisseur.

  • +8

Not that appealing anymore since the quality and taste change due to a recent change in ingredients proportion.

    • We should ask wooljerks to reduce the price by 28% to reflect the reduction in cream

  • -2

Ben & Jerry’s at Coles from Wed is half price for $7.25, combine that with Shopback receipts $2.50 cashback for any Ben & Jerry’s purchase when you upload the receipt. $4.75 pretty good for a B&J

  • +5

Tried the coffee one recently and the taste has gone downhill. Not that good anymore.

    • +1

same, tried it for the first time and it tasted bad. Probably won't even finish the tub

  • +3

It should be less than $5 considering the cream content reduction.

  • +2

The new pistachio flavour is decent, but my old favourite Cafe Grande has definitely gone downhill

    • +2

Is the pistachio flavour strong or just a hint?

      • I’d say it’s a “hint”, you can definitely taste it and there’s even bits of pistachio pieces through it but it’s not a strong flavour, I think it might be the raspberry ripple that slightly overpowers the pistachio flavour. Still, it’s creamy and delicious, you can’t really go wrong.

Loved this stuff til the last time I bought it, so figured I'd waste my time and reach out to them on FB.

Hey, dufflover. Thanks for taking your time to share your thoughts with us on this! At Ozbargain, we believe that premium comments should be an immersive sensory experience…

  • isnt this now 'ice cream flavoured' frozen snack?

  • +5

Don't think I'll be buying these much any more after the recipe change.

If they had to change something, I wish they just increased the price as necessary and kept the recipe the same!

    • +2

why not cheapen the recipe AND increase the price?

  • +6

Why can't they just do a matcha green tea without white chocolate. Keep it pure and simple

    • +2

Or stick to the original recipe from 3+ years ago..

    • +1

I'd happily swap the white choc for more matcha. A pitiful 0.9% matcha in its recipe is like asking for mild heat on a Thai curry.

      Where is the kick?

  • +2

I used to regularly buy Vanilla Caramel Brownie and Cafe Grande. I recently bought them after a while and didnt like them. Didnt know they changed the recipe.
I tried Sweetporium’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream and I am addicted to it. Stocking up everytime they go on sale and my plan to ration it fails miserably.

    • +1

      Cafe Grande was my choice

But now looking for peanut butter cup instead

    • +8

Awesome second comment on ozbargain. Your first is the same too.
      Thanks for contributing.

  • so does all the connoisseur ice cream now taste bad even the og ones like cookies and cream and salted caramel?

I mean which tastes better I suppose the coles homebrand equivalents or connoisseur ones these days since the recipe change has anyone compared?
