  • Did you already admit it's yours? Should just say it isn't yours and you're pet sitting. Then in a month's time "buy" a cat.

  • You bought a cat depending if you got him or her within 1-3 months, you might get some leniency. Cat registrations shouldn't be much. I had my dog for 6 months now and I've spent over 16 grand on that fella

You'll sort out the fine one way or another, just give the cat lots of love and you'll come out ahead regardless.

  • We didn't register our new cat because we didn't intend to let him out for a few months and the council contacted us and told us we needed to register him, so we did. I'm glad they contacted us first rather than slapping us with a fine.

  • I have a dream. OP happened to give the cat away to a friend days before the period to register the cat expired!
The friend has to register the cat within a certain period of time but decided not to keep the cat, so gave the cat back to OP. Technically OP has not breach the law!

Customer: I've got a license for me pet dog Eric, and I've got a license for me pet cat Eric…

Shopkeeper: You don't need a license for your cat.

C: I bleeding well do and I got one. I can't be caught out there.

S: There's no such thing as a bloody cat license.

    C: Yes there is!

    S: Isn't!

    C: Is!

    S: Isn't!

C: I bleeding got one, look! What's that then?

S: This is a dog license with the word 'dog' crossed out and 'cat' written in in crayon.

C: The man didn't have the right form.

    S: What man?

C: The man from the cat detector van.

S: The looney detector van, you mean.

C: Look, it's people like you what cause unrest.

    S: What cat detector van?

C: The cat detector van from the Ministry of Housinge.

    S: Housinge?

C: It was spelt like that on the van. I'm very observant!. I never seen so many bleeding aerials. The man said that their equipment could pinpoint a purr at four hundred yards! And Eric, being such a happy cat, was a piece of cake.

S: How much did you pay for this?

C: Sixty quid, and eight for the fruit-bat.

  • I also had no idea you had to register a cat and if I bought one from a lost pets home and they didn't tell me, reported it to the council, who also didn't tell me, I'd be copping a fine too (although too wise these days to post about it on OzB).

OP I think you're right to call the council and explain the situation. I would just calmly highlight that the place you adopted the cat from gave you an adoption pack that didn't have any registration information and you were never sent anything by the council either. Be polite. Also explain that your circumstances changed suddenly requiring you to move councils and that when you did the cat was registered (hopefully not too long after you got it).

This is ignorance of a cat registration council rule, not ignorance of the constitutional law necessary to maintain a job in parliament! ;) Good luck.

  • so what happens when you move councils
    does the registration transfer?

    • You are required to advise your new council that you have pets, and your old council that you have moved.

  • Move to QLD ? they axed cat registrations a few months ago

    • Please do not post false information; this does not help.
Registrations are handled by Councils not States and Qld councils still require registration for cats.
      Thank you.

  • ozbargain gold, someone just print me some money and get it over with

Cunce. Pure and simple. Hope there's a way to challenge it successfully.

There is a group on Facebook called "get out of paying fines rego fees tolls and rates" that may be of assistance.

Oh how sad it is,when someone asks for help? Most of the comments are attacking the guy,Because apparently everyone should know everything? Well according to the internet.
How sad, nothing better to do i see? than put someone down on the internet.
I guess putting other people down on the internet is all you have.
Bravo to you, and what a sad life it must be.

  • This is not my cat.
I am pet sitting for 3months while owner is on holidays.

Since when has cat rego been in? Sounds like a money making exercise to me.

    • I guess it depends on your state, but I've been registering my cats since the 1990s.

    • That is correct. It raises money to pay the people who ensure that cats are protected and controlled appropriately.
Would you rather than non-owners paid for this?
