  • Might be good for diving there. But what a regrettable place to go for a holiday!

I agree with both. Short flight from KK to Sipadan for some unregrettable diving though.

      Why regrettable?

We had a great time in KK. The city itself is pretty nondescript but there's plenty of other stuff to do around there and the ShangriLa resort we stayed at was fantastic.

      • I don't believe they have embraced tourism in quite the right way. Facilities were woeful and the city is simply underwhelming.

Like others have said, it depends on what you are looking for in a holiday (we went to unwind and do nothing). Getting there was fine and transport was easy. We stayed for 3 nights at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru which was a nice resort but ultimately ruined by rude and obnoxious tourists. Then we stayed 6 nights at Gaya Island Resort which was exceptional. We went into "town" to have a look for half a day and didn't see anything there that would warrant a return. YMMV.

The airport was horrendous on the way back out though, with no organisation to speak of. We went 3 years ago so they may have improved things since.

It depends what you are going for. I absolutely loved it. Beautiful nature, very friendly and relaxed people (compared to KL), good shopping centres, and great food.

        Yep. This.
Also KK Is a gateway to rain forests, tours, climbing Mount Kinabalu, diving in Sipadan (although KK diving isn't too bad either), etc. Also, the fish market on the KK waterfront is cheap and delicious.

Great price.. The only down side is you'll have already missed durian season! (… Or upside to some)

Just head sth to Sarawak. Mulu caves, Semenggoh Orangutan Centre, etc

Then off to Tioman for diving & dutyfree booze.

Same price to Tawau. Ideal entry point for Sipadan diving. Malaysia Airlines includes 30 Kg as well.. great for dive gear

    • The smaller prop planes from KK to Tawau may have a different limit, always worth checking ticket conditions. Was there last month, and it was 20KG.

      • +1

Its direct KL to Tawau… bypasses KK. At least for the non-Perth departures

    • Please note that Semporna is a total hole, I recommend you stay at Kapalai which is a nice budget overwater bungalow option :) (Budget for overwater bungalow, not an actual budget option)

  • +1

Can u do same price to KL?

    • +1

      Given they're via KUL you'd hope so…

      • MH does fly direct to KK from Perth.

  • Kota Kinabalu is so close to the Philippines , cheap flights :)

    • +1

He has a point. Their Air Asia aircraft are having just as bad problems. I will also stay away from anything to do with Malaysian Airlines…

  • Any from Brisbane?

  • +2

I went there for work once and was not allowed to stay in the city over night because of the problems they were having with kidnapping of westerners (I think Abu Sayyaf). I had to fly out of the city before nightfall.

The story was that Philippine kidnap gangs would come down to the harbour in fast boats at night and kidnap westerners drag them back to somewhere in the Philippines then ransom them off.

    • Nice place. How long ago was that?

      • +1

        few years ago now

  • Great place to be when you actually get there but the stop over is a killer.
